Jeb Bush has become the GOP
front-runner for 2016 — so now what?

Mitt Romney’s decision to forgo a third try at the White House has settled the question of whether the 2016 GOP presidential field has a front-runner — bestowing a coveted status on former Florida governor Jeb Bush that also raises new challenges and perils. Republicans have a tradition of picking an anointed one early. That establishment candidate almost always ends up with the nomination, although not without a fight and some speed bumps along the way. But this is a particularly unsettled time for the party. It is struggling to define its identity amid open warfare among its various factions. And

Megyn Kelly tonight took on Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby about the news that one of the “Taliban Five” has made contact with terrorists since being freed from Guantanamo Bay. “Can you assure the American people that these five guys do not pose any threat to the United States?” Kelly pressed. Kirby insisted that the U.S. is working with Qatar to mitigate the threat, but Kelly questioned Kirby on how this man made contact with terrorists “if our protocols are so great.” “Obviously, there’s a flaw in the system,” Kelly remarked. But Kirby argued that the system in

If you’ve ever wondered “What the Hell Does ‘Politically Correct’ Mean?” and would like to hear the Marxist origins of the phrase, and how it mutated into one of the catchphrases of the 1990s until today, Jesse Walker has you covered at Reason. Everyone on the right knows what it’s like to argue with someone who´s been infected by the PC virus, a “word fetish,” as novelist John C. Wright dubs it, in pungent terms. “What the Leftist does in debate is utter his idiot word fetishes and slogans with the sneering hauteur of a card player displaying his trump

U.S. Sen. John McCain on Friday signaled he would back U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina over his former running mate Sarah Palin in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries.McCain, R-Ariz., the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, has been an early and unabashed supporter of Graham, his friend and fellow Senate Armed Services Committee member who on Thursday took steps to officially "test the waters" of a White House bid by organizing a political committee. But Palin, a former Alaska governor and McCain´s 2008 pick for vice president, on Jan. 23 told the Washington Post she is "seriously interested" in running for

Last July, a few weeks before the New England Patriots started training camp, I got a call from Donald Yee, the agent in Los Angeles who has represented Tom Brady since he entered the N.F.L. in 2000. It had been four years since I first told Yee that I was interested in writing about Brady, even though I typically cover politics. I grew up in the Boston suburbs, rooted for the Patriots as a kid and even possessed vague memories of watching the team play at Fenway Park, one of their homes before they settled into the nowhereland of Foxborough,

According to a Honey Maid commercial, divorce is now “wholesome.” “You know, I never thought I’d get divorced,” says a dad, as pictures of a smiling, blended family flit across the screen. “But the way I look at it, there are just more of us to love the kids now,” he says. “This is who we are, as perfect as we’re supposed to be,” a woman adds. The narrator joins in as two men are shown cooing over a baby: “No matter how things change, what makes us wholesome never will. Honey Maid. This is wholesome.” The description below the video of the ad on Honey Maid’s YouTube channel explains,

My spidey sense has been telling me for a while that Hillary Clinton would not be a very strong candidate for president, despite those polls that seem to show her ahead of the GOP field. First of all, she has tons of baggage, including a disastrous term as Secretary of State. Relations with Russia are in the tank, and there is that picture of her with an idiot grin holding a “reset button” with her Russian counterpart. (snip) She has dropped out of sight lately, which is a sure sign that plastic surgery is underway (again) to repair that tired

On Sunday’s Meet the Press, moderator Chuck Todd took House Speaker John Boehner to task for inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to Congress without notifying the White House ahead of time. During an interview with Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI), Todd accused Boehner of trying to “antagonize the relationship between the two sides" and wondered "is that worth doing?” Todd began his questioning of Ryan by suggesting Boehner’s invitation to Netanyahu was extremely inappropriate and would cause further problems between the two allies: Is it appropriate for Congress to invite a world leader to address them without telling

In the latest round of verbal gymnastics over the Taliban, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki refused to categorize the murder of American civilians at Kabul International Airport an act of “terrorism.” The Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack on Friday, which killed three civilian contractors working for the U.S. government and wounded one other. The gunman was reportedly a member of Afghan security forces who turned his weapon on his colleagues before being killed. “He managed yesterday evening to attain his goal and opened fire with his rifle on a group of American occupiers,” Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said. The attacker was

Pollster John Zogby reports in our weekly White House report card that President Obama is having a good stretch leading to next week’s release of the annual federal budget, and his improving numbers prove it. “The president is simply on a tear, and his polling numbers continue to edge up. Does that matter? Of course it does. “It strengthens him and shores up his base. It even forces Congress to back down on issues the president will veto like immigration, the XL pipeline and new sanctions on Iran. “The president firmed up ties with India and paid respects to the new King of

Despite a national debt over $18 trillion, President Obama said Saturday the nation can afford the major spending increases he’ll put forward in his fiscal year 2016 budget, due out Monday. In his weekly address, Mr. Obama made the case that the federal government has the money to invest in infrastructure, education and other priorities because of shrinking deficits, though he also is calling for tax hikes on the wealthy to fund his desired $74 billion increase in spending. His budget also would undo the automatic cuts known as sequestration, paving the way for even higher spending down the road.

Long before Ray Kroc established the empire that currently employs more people than the entire United States military, the McDonald’s pioneer lied about his age and enlisted as an ambulance driver during the First World War. One of Kroc´s comrades in the Red Cross was fellow future visionary Walt Disney, who went on to establish a pretty expansive kingdom of his own. Like Disney, Kroc was both a perfectionist and a tinkerer. He sold paper cups and even made ends meet playing jazz—a genre reliant on quick thought and improvisation. During his tenure as a milkshake-machine salesman, Kroc first encountered the McDonald
