Speaking to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday afternoon, Wall Street Journal‘s Bret Stephens said that it was important for Donald Trump to lose the general election so utterly that the Republican party and its voters “learn their lesson” and never nominate someone like him ever agin. Stephens has been one of Trump’s most outspoken conservative critics, writing in March, for instance, that Trump is essentially an amplified version of Barack Obama. Both men were “epic narcissists who see themselves as singularly suited to redeem an America that is not only imperfect but fundamentally broken,” he wrote. “The candidacy of Donald Trump

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Ca.) told ABC’s Jonathan Karl Sunday that Hillary Clinton just wanted some privacy to be able to talk to her husband, daughter, and friends “and not have somebody looking over her shoulder into her e-mails.” “Oh wait a second, I don’t believe she was trying to hide anything,” Feinstein said. “I’ve known Hillary for a quarter of a century. Let me tell you what I do think. I think this is a woman who wants a little bit of a private life. She wants to be able to communicate with husband, with daughter, with friends, and

A serious independent candidate will step up to challenge presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and likely Democratic standard-bearer Hillary Clinton, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol suggested on Sunday. (Tweet) "Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate — an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance," Kristol said in a message on Twitter. Kristol has been calling for another independent challenger to emerge in the presidential race for more than a month, speaking about it most notably with Mitt Romney; former Republican Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn; and Republican Nebraska Sen.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment, authorities said Saturday. Dejean-Jones had been visiting his girlfriend’s new apartment and mistakenly entered the wrong unit, the player’s agent said. A man living at the apartment was sleeping when he heard his front door kicked open, Dallas Police Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said in a statement. When Dejean-Jones began kicking at the bedroom door, the man retrieved a handgun and fired. Officers who responded found Dejean-Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway, and he died at a hospital. He was 23.

Barack Obama spoke in Hiroshima yesterday. The full text of his speech is here. Obama did not quite apologize for America’s use of the atomic bomb to bring WWII to an end, as some had feared. But his speech was nevertheless deeply revealing of his world view. Let’s begin by acknowledging that parts of Obama’s address were good, or at least unexceptionable. Peace is better than war! Modern man has developed terrible weapons, and the deaths of tens of millions are tragic. But it was in his specific references to Hiroshima and the weapons used there where Obama revealed his radical

In the weeks leading up to Memorial Day and President Barack Obama’s scheduled trip to Vietnam, a prominent Vietcong communist leader privately thanked American anti-war activists for helping defeat the U.S.-allied government in Vietnam in the 1970s, saying protest demonstrations throughout the United States were “extremely important in contributing to Vietnam’s victory.” For Vietnamese guerrilla leader Madam Nguyen Thi Binh, who sent the private letter from Hanoi dated April 20, “victory” meant the communist takeover of South Vietnam. The letter addressed veteran American anti-war activists who gathered in Washington, D.C., at a May 3 reunion of radical “May Day” anti-war

The slow, painful demise of Sears continues. The struggling retailer, which also owns equally troubled Kmart, reported a loss of $471 million in the first quarter, worse than a year ago. Sales fell more than 8%. Sears (SHLD) also announced that it may sell three of its iconic brands -- Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard. The company said it is looking at strategic alternatives for its Home Services installation and repair businesses as well. These three brands -- dubbed KCD by the company -- are still well-known and popular. In a pre-recorded call for analysts and investors, CFO Rob Schriesheim said

Katie Couric reportedly regrets the “unnecessary mistake” of editing her documentary Under the Gun in a way that appeared to smear gun rights advocates. In one scene of the documentary released last week, Couric is speaking to the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) and asks, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?” In the documentary, her question is followed by several seconds of silence, suggesting that her question had rendered them dumb. In fact, the interviewees offered lucid responses to her question almost immediately, a fact that

The Never Trump movement may be dead, but like Frankenstein’s monster, it keeps being sewn back together out of a hodgepodge of scary parts. The mad scientist in this case is National Standard editor Bill Kristol, assisted ably by his own Igor, Erick Erickson of TheResurgent.com (and both of Fox News).Together they have invented a monstrous pastiche of faults supposedly inhabited by Donald J. Trump, the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican Party. So let’s consider why the Never Trumpers applying their Olympian standards to mere mortal presidents over the past 227 years could NEVER have supported any of them, not even

As you may have seen, Donald Trump was in New Mexico earlier this week. He attacked the state’s governor, Susana Martinez. Who is a conservative Republican. A Reagan Republican. I know her a little bit. I’ve interviewed her at length. I’ve studied her governorship. For a 2012 piece, go here. For a piece two years later — when Martinez was running for reelection — go here. Trump and Martinez could not be more different from each other. They are night and day. Martinez, I guess, represents the old Republican party. Trump represents the new one, the Trumpified GOP.
