Warren calls for ‘full-blown
conversation about reparations’

Politico, by Alex Thompson

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) gave her most detailed answer to date on the question of reparations for black Americans as a means of addressing centuries of slavery and legal discrimination. In a CNN town hall on Monday night in Jackson, Miss., Warren became the first 2020 presidential candidate serving in the Senate to endorse a House bill that would create a commission to study reparation proposals. “I love the idea of this congressional commission,” she said at Jackson State, a historically black university. “I believe it’s time to start the national, full-blown conversation about reparations.” The bill

These conversations should begin with full-blown negotiations with the British, Spanish and a few African governments. They can pay for establishing and profiting from the North American slavery business. Then we can have the "full-blown" conversation about how much my family is due from these funds for their service in the Union army to emancipate.

Since Democrats have a monopoly on collective guilt, it should be simple enough for EACH of them to open their checkbook and write a large check for reparations.
Rest assured that 1 or 2 checks will NOT be enough.
Many, many Americans are immigrants and had ZERO connection to any slavery and as such need no "´conversation." Also, any present-day slaveholders in America should consider reparations. And put a few bucks aside and send them to the Fund-Me website for the Mass Senator´s psychiatric expenses.

My great great great grandfather — a Union soldier — was gravely injured and held at Andersonville Prison Camp by the Confederacy.

Does my family get a “credit” for the blood and treasure it took to end slavery?

They are asserting one more time their belief that blacks can´t compete on a level playing field.

I didn´t have anyone fighting for the North, but if I had, I would be furious over this. (Just color my family Confederate. And yes, we did have some slave holders---just read my 6th great grandfather´s will tonight that passed slaves, specific by name, to his heirs. And of course it *named* his heirs, which was what I was after anyway.) Slavery was unfortunate to all those it touched, both slaves and masters. The Irish were being starved by the English; in the 18th century they might have jumped at the opportunity to work as free laborers in America. But I digress.

Before the civil war only dems owned slaves. Who should pay for reparations? I guess the dems and those blacks who owned them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blJKdNr5VSU

3000 blacks owned 12,000 slaves "So what do the actual numbers of black slave owners and their slaves tell us? In 1830, the year most carefully studied by Carter G. Woodson, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States, so the numbers of slaves owned by black people"

What percent Black is Lizzie again? Surely she wants to include herself in the receiving end of reparations. Also, if a generation of Blacks is going to receive a check but have never seen a slave, how far into the future are we expected to pay, Stardate 3050 or some such, or is this a perpetual democrat program like affirmative action? She needs to explain herself a little better before I vote for her.

We have been giving black people reparations for 50 years. We have given them preferred status in college entrance, loans, business positions, employment, and housing. With few exceptions, it hasn’t helped them improve their status as a group. So why do more of what doesn’t work?

This is campaign pandering and there will never be a serious attempt to pay anybody reparations. The logistics of trying to require proof of entitlement would be impossible. The real point here is that in order to survive as a party Democrats have no choice but to offer free stuff paid for by others.

Here´s my thinking about reparations:

(1) The Civil War, 14th Amendment, Reconstruction, the massive "Great Society" social welfare program, etc. have already paid for slavery. There is not a single person alive today from that era that would legitimately be eligible for reparations.

(2) However, we have the Jim Crow era, which was perpetuated by DEMOCRATS, with their military arm, the Ku Klux Klan. And, there are many people still alive who were negatively impacted by this racist set of policies by DEMOCRATS.

(3) Therefore, I think that the DEMOCRATIC Party should pay reparations to any person affected -- and still alive -- by the Jim Crow laws of the South. This to me seems a reasonable case for reparations.

(4) Ball´s in your court, Dims.

No, is the only answer.

There are NO people alive who have any first hand knowledge of this, and any claims otherwise are lies.

All of us have had some problems in our past generations, and we are what we are by our own efforts and often with help of our parent´s efforts.

The last slave would have had to been born in 1863 or so (and would never have any memory of being a slave) and would have died at least half a century ago. Almost all actual adult slaves would have died at least a century ago. Likely the closest relations out there are great-grand parents, most will be more distant. Few people ever meet any great grandparents.

For comparison, the last Civil War veteran, a 106 year old who served as a drummer boy, died 63 years ago. This is the most extreme case.

Give this BS a rest.

But then, I am using facts and logic....which are inapplicable to a lot of folks, they cannot grasp either.

Gimmme, gimme, gimme. Any excuse.

I am sick and tired of the "George Orwell´s 1984" misuse of language. From the etymology (history of a word) dictionary, reparations means:

An "act of repairing or mending" is attested from c. 1400. Reparations "compensation for war damaged owed by the aggressor".

No "American" nor even colonist ever sailed to Africa and captured a single slave. A few...some indicate that less than 10% of southerners owned even one slave...made the legal purchase of "merchandise" offered at auction. There was a global market, and the terms of trade with Great Briton (which at the time "ruled" over the colonies) practically required the use of slave labor to meet production contracts.

This country began the abolitionist movement, and as posted above many Americans died to free the slaves during the Civil War. More people have immigrated into the country after the Civil War than were living here before then.

Another thing you don´t see mentioned is that from 1865 to 1960, every town of any size had a segregated thriving black middle/upper class, with merchants, doctors and lawyers. In that time:

Fewer black than white couples had their first child within a year of marriage.
More black than white families attended church together throughout their lives.
Fewer black than white students dropped out of school before graduating.
Fewer black than white marriages ended in divorce.

For decades, Catherine Leach has never accepted the official explanation about who was behind the series of killings in Atlanta that terrorized the city and left her teenage son dead. Her 13-year-old son, Curtis Walker, was one of 29 mostly black children who were killed from 1979 to 1981 in a spate of crimes that became known as the Atlanta child murders. During those tense three years, children vanished, only to have their bodies turn up days later, with many of them having been strangled. The killings haunted Atlanta and brought grief to families, but also festered racial suspicions.

Former interim Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile was full of posthumous praise for the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Wednesday’s edition of Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier. The context was President Trump’s renewed criticism of McCain after a newly-released deposition showed how deeply McCain was involved in the fraudulent “Russia dossier” that has been used to attack the administration and divide the nation. Brazile, who Fox News recently hired as a contributor, began by criticizing the president for speaking ill of the dead. She then continued: “John McCain leaves a legacy. He leaves a legacy of

The San Antonio City Council banned Chick-fil-A from San Antonio International Airport over “anti-LGBTQ behavior” as part of a new concession plan for the airport. District 1 City Councilman Roberto Treviño motioned to approve the Food, Beverage and Retail Prime Concession Agreement with Paradies Lagardère for the airport Thursday on condition Chick-fil-A be excluded from the agreement. Treviño asserted Chick-fil-A has a “legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior” and that such a business had no place in the city’s airport. The commandant of the Marines has warned the Pentagon that deployments to the southwest border and funding transfers under the president’s emergency declaration, among other unexpected demands, have posed “unacceptable risk to Marine Corps combat readiness and solvency.” In two internal memos, Marine Corps Gen. Robert Neller said the “unplanned/unbudgeted” deployment along the border that President Trump ordered last fall, and shifts of other funds to support border security, had forced him to cancel or reduce planned military training in at least five countries, and delay urgent repairs at bases.(Snip) Neller, a four-star general, said because of the

The apparent scoop du jour is that ex-VP Joe Biden is set to announce his bid with his running mate already picked out: former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. Suggestions for his VP thus far have been a who’s-who of the current field of competition for the nomination, including Harris and O’Rourke. Abrams possibly becoming The Chosen One is somewhat surprising, because her star has only so recently begun its ascendency — but not too surprising, because of her fierce intellect, warm demeanor and popularity. Stacey Abrams exudes good sense and kindness, delivered with impeccable poise: that’s the impression most

The Washington National Cathedral disputed President Trump´s claim that he had to "approve" the funeral of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "Washington National Cathedral was honored to host the funeral service for Senator John McCain. All funerals and memorial services at the Cathedral are organized by the family of the deceased; only a state funeral for a former president involves consultation with government officials," a cathedral spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill on Thursday. "No funeral at the Cathedral requires the approval of the president or any other government official," he added.

A few months ago, Colton Haas and I traveled to the once beautiful city of San Francisco, hoping to have a question answered: What happened to San Francisco? (Video) Erica Sandberg, a community advocate and journalist, broke it down for us: "Right now the major issue — people always call it homelessness — but the major issue is drugs." While San Francisco has always battled homelessness and currently has about 7,000 homeless people, the drug issue is exacerbating the problem. The city currently hands out more than 400,000 syringes each month but only 246,000 are returned, leaving 154,000 syringes left

Democratic presidential candidate John Hickenlooper confirmed Wednesday night during his CNN town hall event that he took his mother to watch an X-rated pornographic movie when he was younger and that the two stayed for the entire movie. (Video) Hickenlooper confirmed that the incident, which he wrote about in his memoir, happened when he returned home from college to visit his mother for Thanksgiving. Hickenlooper´s dad died when he was 8-years-old, and he said that he didn´t realize that his mother was lonely until he returned home from college."I promised, I called a friend in Philadelphia — and ... we

What’s in a name? Everything for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Democrat blasted Fox News host Laura Ingraham and her guest for mocking how she pronounced her name and saying she does so because it’s a “Latina thing.” “If by ‘the Latina thing,’ she means I actually do the work instead of just talk about it, then yeah, I’m doing ‘the Latina thing,’” she wrote on her Twitter page late Wednesday. “Unless of course she‘s talking about being multilingual, which we know isn’t a ‘Latina thing.’ It’s a ‘21st century’ thing.” Ocasio-Cortez also said that Fox News’

Hours after New Zealand announced prohibitions against semiautomatic rifles and shotguns, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) tweeted the U.S. needs to follow the gun ban example. Feinstein tweeted: “In country after country, massacres are followed by sweeping changes to gun laws, as logic would dictate. The United States needs to follow these examples and take action to protect Americans from this deadly public health scourge.” She attached a statement to her tweet wherein she noted: Here at home in America, since the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, we’ve suffered through at least 227 school shootings that killed 143 and left

Former liberal Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ripped President Donald Trump on Wednesday evening for his “absolutely unacceptable” attacks on the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). “He was just an unbelievable person,” Schwarzenegger told the Atlantic. “So an attack on him is absolutely unacceptable if he’s alive or dead—but even twice as unacceptable since he passed away a few months ago. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to do that. I just think it’s a shame that the president lets himself down to that kind of level.
