The ISIS sympathizer accused of killing eight people in the Hudson River bike path attack was under government surveillance “for years,” according to new court papers. The revelation included in a heavily redacted filing in Manhattan Federal Court from Saipov’s defense team raises questions about whether the government could have done more to prevent the alleged act of terrorism by the unhinged Uzbek. “The government revealed it had been surveilling Mr. Saipov and two of his associates for years, recording his conversations with them to gather information about his personal contacts, professional experiences, finances, and potential exposure to ISIS propaganda,

Comments:
There are only so many hours in a day, what with investigating anyone and everyone associated with Donald Trump, and covering up for Hillary Clinton. And sure, he slipped through the cracks and killed 8 people, but he also contributed to the USA´s rich cultural tapestry.

More secret tribunals. When did it become OK for judges to hide the proceedings ? Public access is a fundamental part of justice in the Anglo-American tradition.

ICE releasing 1,000 illegal

Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan    Original Article

ICE has had to turn loose more than 100,000 illegal immigrant family members over the past three months, a top official said Thursday, setting them free in border communities as the surge of people coming to the U.S. overwhelms the system. That works out to more than 1,000 family members being cut loose every day, stressing not only Homeland Security but also the charities that are trying to help them, and the local infrastructure—including bus stations—that are trying to help them. The numbers are so high that deportation officers are being taken from other duties such as scouring prisons

A federal judge ruled that the Interior Department violated federal law by failing to take into account the climate impact of its oil and gas leasing in the West. The decision late Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras in the District of Columbia marks the first time the Trump administration has been held to account for the climate impact of its energy agenda, and it could have sweeping implications for the president’s plan to boost fossil fuel production across the country. Contreras concluded that Interior’s Bureau of Land Management “did not sufficiently consider climate change” when making decisions to auction

New York — Despite Mayor Bill de Blasio’s attempts to diversify the New York City’s specialized high schools, only a small number of black and Hispanic eighth graders received admission offers to those schools this year. About 27,500 eighth graders across the city took the Specialized High School admissions test, or SHSAT, this year. Among the 4,798 students who received an offer to one of the city’s specialized high schools based on their exam score, only 506 black and Hispanic students received offers to schools, including Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science and Brooklyn Technical High School.

Richmond, Va. — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has again vetoed a bill aimed at preventing so-called “sanctuary cities” in the state. Northam, a Democrat, said he was vetoing the legislation Tuesday because it imposes an unneeded burden on local law enforcement officials and “sends a chilling message.” It was the same statement he issued last year when he vetoed the same legislation. A sanctuary city is a term without legal definition but generally means a locality that limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement activities. Republicans said the legislation is needed to ensure federal immigration efforts aren’t hampered. The bill narrowly passed

The battle over the admissions standards at New York City’s elite public high schools has heated up again. After having failed to change the standards last year, Mayor Bill de Blasio is back at it, this time with some backup from celebrity freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
