Socialism: An Old Dogma
With No New Tricks

American Spectator, by David Catron

When people like Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez extol the virtues of socialism it reminds me of Dorothy Parker’s pun, “You can’t teach an old dogma new tricks.” Parker’s quip had nothing to do with politics, of course. It was about religion. This, ironically, renders it uniquely applicable to the recent resurgence of public interest in this hoary collectivist doctrine. The belief that replacing free market capitalism with socialism would result in a more equitable society requires a leap of faith. Unlike belief in Christianity or Judaism, for example, it requires blind faith combined with illiteracy in history and economics.

A dose of sunshine and reality.

The sad thing is, much of the media is beating the Socialist drums as well. You can see a bit of quivering around the perimeter but even the media people that question Socialism tend to say "but with Trump what choice do we have?".

This illustrates how useless the media has become. Trump has done a great job at demonstrating that. It would be wonderful if the timid republicans, the next time there is an blatant media smear, all rise to call it out and demand the media do a fair and competent job.

As to getting the message to the voters, unfortunately it is going to be a job of repeat, repeat, repeat. Most voters simply are NOT tuned in. The message that reaches them needs to be meaningful TO THEM, focused/limited, and never ending. And obviously, the media is not going to help.

Elderly (I know, not a PC word) black women who get their news exclusively from black radio stations think the Democrat Party is the Party that protects the unborn! The millennials´ view of socialism is at a similar level. They think it means being active on social media. Which BTW is why Democrats favor lowering the voting age. As PDT gets through to more and more people, watch the ´Rats compare opposition to socialism to racism. It has already started.

Socialism has failed every time it has been tried. How will the Democrat party´s application of socialism be different so it does not fail? They have not explained that so far.

The idiots think socialism is government stepping in to do good things to help people in need of and deserving help. The idiots think that socialism is letting the workers share in the profits and decision making in the work place. The idiots fear the power of corporate capitalists.

No system has ever done more good for the least privileged in society and outside of their own society than our constitutional republic under a capitalist free market system. The only place where it is legal for workers to own the business and make decisions is under capitalism. You fear a capitalist employer from whom you are free to leave and who is subject to competition from other capitalists but don’t fear a government bureaucrat with the authority to dictate everything where you are not free to leave, there is no competition and they can back up their decisions with the force of an armed military.

Sorry, socialism is not what you think.

There was once a day, or at least Louis Brandeis said there was, when the states were the laboratory of democracy. I cannot personally confirm that rumor. Over the course of my own life, the Ffederal government has been a 24-hour laboratory for mandates on the states, respectively, or on the people. In the economic realm, as just one example, Washington confiscates much of our wealth and then tells us what to do with the rest. Washington has even larger appetites for the regulatory state, of course, which is now moving briskly beyond the boundaries

During the past eight years, California voters have twice reiterated their support for the death penalty by defeating propositions seeking to overturn it.If anyone was confused about Californians’ understanding of the death penalty representing an important part of justice, in 2016 they even passed a proposition calling for the speeding up of executions by shortening the decades-long appeals process. In other words, Californians want the death penalty, and they want to it happen faster and more often.

Beto O’Rourke, the former El Paso Congressman and failed Texas Senate candidate who announced his presidential run last Thursday, named his first son Ulysses. It’s a Latinized name for the hero, Odysseus, in the Homeric epic The Odyssey. This is typical of Beto: he likes heroes, and the stories of their discovery, trials, and triumphs. One of Beto’s favorite books is The Hero’s Journey, an overview by the literary theorist Joseph Campbell of Campbell’s theory of heroic myth. In Campbell’s work, the hero story, or “monomyth,” can be broken down into component parts,

Elizabeth Warren “is facing tough questions about fundraising and electability,” or so says The Associated Press. She is languishing in fifth place in a spate of polls of Democratic primary voters; Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke are dominating the money race; and her detailed and thoughtful position papers on health care, monopolies and tax policy threaten to define her as the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Winner of 2020—the candidate who wins a prize from policy wonks and civic-minded pundits, but who never wins the nomination. There’s no single answer for Warren’s slow start.

On Tuesday the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration in Nielsen v. Preap, allowing the Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal aliens without bond while awaiting deportation for committing crimes within our borders. The decision reversed a ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. It was authored by Justice Samuel Alito, who was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts as well as Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh. The ruling involved a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of various resident aliens, including a few with Green Cards, convicted of crimes for which U.S. law mandates deportation.

Democrats are predicting a climate-change-fueled apocalypse 12 years from now, but 3,800 miles away in Paris, we’re seeing a preview of the real doomsday scenario that would result from radical policies such as the Green New Deal. For the 18th weekend in a row, violent protests broke out in the streets of one of Europe’s oldest cities as French citizens protested their government’s efforts to make them bear the costs of transitioning to clean energy. The mouvement des gilets jaunes, or Yellow Vests Movement, started in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to raise gas taxes

Theresa May’s crushing defeat in the House of Commons this week over her plan for Britain to leave the European Union was actually a great victory for her, provided that you make a simple assumption: that she and her colleagues never wanted Britain to leave the EU in the first place. A majority of the British legislature is, and always was, opposed to Brexit. Those legislators who agitated most vociferously for it declined, when the time came, to carry out the policy, leaving it to a woman already well known for her political maladroitness.

In their fever to dispense with President Trump immediately, Democrats are losing sight of what Marxists called the “objective conditions” in the country and the fundamentals of presidential politics. Unless they take care, they will forfeit their chance to regain the White House in 2020 and could return congressional control to Republicans as well. Begin with the objective conditions. The first is continuing public disenchantment with political, media, financial and cultural establishments. It is this disenchantment that brought Mr. Trump to the White House in the first place

They’re concerned that Robert Francis O’Rourke, who this week joined an already-crowded field of 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls, is trying to put one over on Latinos by tricking them into thinking he’s one of them. Amidst the welter of good and bad news we are assaulted with every day, by far the most dangerous long-term are the new polls showing America´s youth tilting significantly toward socialism. Not surprisingly, these same young people haven´t the slightest idea of what socialism really is, its history or what it entails, which is suicidal for them more than anyone else. They are the ones who will suffer most if the USA turns into Venezuela. Because of a sclerotic leftwing education system, our youth have been indoctrinated in a simple-minded version of socialism for decades without knowing it.

If you find it difficult to grasp how a handful of leftwing extremists managed to win last week’s battle with the nominal leadership of the Democratic Party over a House resolution originally written to condemn anti-Semitism, Margaret Thatcher explained the phenomenon four decades ago: “The one thing about leftwing politicians is that they are always fanatical. They never let go. It’s their religion.” She was describing how the Labour Party had been destroyed from within by a small minority of radicals. Thatcher eventually exploited this process, led the Conservative Party to victory over Labour, and became Prime Minister

The San Antonio City Council banned Chick-fil-A from San Antonio International Airport over “anti-LGBTQ behavior” as part of a new concession plan for the airport. District 1 City Councilman Roberto Treviño motioned to approve the Food, Beverage and Retail Prime Concession Agreement with Paradies Lagardère for the airport Thursday on condition Chick-fil-A be excluded from the agreement. Treviño asserted Chick-fil-A has a “legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior” and that such a business had no place in the city’s airport. Even though we do not yet know exactly what the Mueller Report says, we do now know that no other indictments are in the works. No collusion with Russia by the Trump campaign was found. So, the self-assured and confident predictions by so many on the left that they had seen "cold, hard evidence," and that Mueller would find copious evidence of "collusion" with Russia, was just wishful thinking alone. They all had to know the infamous "dossier" was faked.

The Washington National Cathedral disputed President Trump´s claim that he had to "approve" the funeral of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "Washington National Cathedral was honored to host the funeral service for Senator John McCain. All funerals and memorial services at the Cathedral are organized by the family of the deceased; only a state funeral for a former president involves consultation with government officials," a cathedral spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill on Thursday. "No funeral at the Cathedral requires the approval of the president or any other government official," he added.

First of all, of course everyone should wait to see the contents of the actual Mueller report before drawing any specific final conclusions about it. But here are some laws of nature in the modern age: If that report contained a fraction of the damaging material breathlessly awaited in the media culture for two years, there would be some smoke signal of it. Instead, we saw an actual finding from the Justice Department that there would be no further indictments from the probe. No indictment of Trump. No indictment of anyone associated with the campaign or the administration to support
