I Had a Late-Term Abortion.
President Trump and Pro-Lifers
Have No Right to Call Me a Murderer.

Slate, by Margot Finn

Original Article

Posted By:MissMolly, 2/11/2019 5:18:08 AM

In December 2014, I had an abortion at 29 weeks, after my first baby was diagnosed with a brain abnormality called lissencephaly. The early diagnosis—lissencephaly is sometimes not diagnosed until after birth—meant her case was severe and her prognosis was grim: We could expect her to live for two to six years while suffering from frequent respiratory infections and intermittently choking on her own saliva. Her cognitive development would be arrested or even reversed by painful seizures. She might have been able to smile socially and/or track motion with her eyes, but maybe not.

I´ll be curious to hear if any other reader spots what I thought was a major missing piece of the author´s puzzle presentation.

Not sure , OP. But I didn’t read HOW her baby died, although I couldn’t finish the whole article. I was startled when I read “out-of-network abortion.”
To Margot: If it was alive before you went to Colorado and it was a baby as you describe AND you were in Colorado of your own free will, I’m not following your argument that it was not murder. But good luck with your article. There are plenty who will agree with you.

Nobody can finish this article. On and on she rambles with no end in sight.

However, if true, hers is an extraordinarily unique case upon which to base a generalized justification for the trendy, anything goes, mass slaughter that is currently taking place.

She may or may not be a "murderer" but she´s working so very hard to provide cover for those who clearly are.

Of what she can be sure, her daughter felt everything that was done to her as she died. Euthanasia is of course murder when the victim has not consented.

Mixed emotions. I tried to put myself in her shoes and I can fully understand why she did it. It was legal and she wanted to spare her baby and herself an agonizing several years without remission of pain and suffering. I get that. But I am always brought back to God‘s Commandments and that is one thing that would have stopped me in my tracks.

Rambling on and on mostly incoherently attempting to justify what you´ve done. You KILLED and you MURDERED ergo rational thought gives me the RIGHT to call you a murderer. Now Margot Murderer, I mean Finn, you need serious counseling and spiritual direction by a very good confessor and priest. Please get help and in the mean time I will pray for your innocent murdered daughter that some crackpot, crank abortionist talked you into.

Many of us or possibly most of us hold the position that if the baby isnt viable, isnt going to make it or will be seriously defective an abortion is tolerable.

But whe you decide to kill your baby as its head is crowning.....yes, that´s murder. If your baby is far enough along to live outside the womb, then yes, its murder.

Trump wasnt talking about YOUR situation, and you know it. But a democrat will never pass up an opportunity to take up the victim cloak and distort their political opponents position for partisan gain.

She had doctors end the life of a baby that was alive. They killed the baby.

I´m sure its difficult for her, but it IS what happened. She decided to kill the baby instead of giving the baby a chance to live outside the womb.

Just because she tries to justify killing the baby doesn´t make it right and going after President Trump and Pro-Lifers does not make HER actions any different.

There is room to disagree.
The Catholic Church has made it clear that all life is sacred and the ending of one because it was defective is murder.
The Third Reich has made it clear that this policy is what is best for the Fatherland and must are implemented without exception!

If third trimester abortion is always ONLY done when there is a devastating diagnosis and/or the mother´s life is in danger, then why does the left freak out when it is suggested that such language is included in a bill? The fact is that the law is written so that a woman can legally choose to end a pregnancy for any whim or reason up to the last push and that is what offends so many of us.

If it is premeditated murder to kill an adult who is not perfectly formed, it is murder to kill a sensate child who is not perfectly formed. At least we normally do not rip the adult apart in the murder.

Having your own offspring killed because they were "defective" and not worth living?

Now where have we heard that before?

OBTW, it was not the baby´s pain that necessitated this murder. It was the mother´s. Let´s just be clear about that.

Her story is her story, and it is tragic. My heart goes out to her. But no less tragic than it would have been had her baby been allowed to be born. I don´t know how anyone could face her situation without God--with only mathematical odds and her own desires to guide her.

I couldn’t finish the article—too long. But there are only utilitarian arguments for abortion in these circumstamces. Many elderly people with Alzheimer’s or sever dementia have no quality of life but we don’t give them “peace”—ie, kill them. There is no moral justification for choosing to end someone else’s life, even if the someone is an unborn baby.

Regarding O.P.´s question of sorts:

I couldn´t bear to re-read this whole horribly sad tale just to be sure of it; but I didn´t recall seeing a single reference of any kind to God:

No question of where God was in the situation, how God could let such a baby come into being (or, worse, how God could make such a life on purpose), nor plea for God´s help, nor anger at God for such a thing to be, nor doubt in God´s love, nor hope for God to bring a miracle... not even a THOUGHT about God. Nothing.

And as #22 mentions, how anybody could possibly face such a situation without strength and inner guidance from God - but just bleak statistics and numbers - is completely unfathomable.

Fifty million babies have been aborted since RvW some early and some late, but certainly not because of some inevitable disasterous disease. But here is a typical Democrat pro Abortion excuse of this somewhat isollated reason, how many have been done because the mother was distressed last minute by the idea of having a child at this time. How soon will it be that a three or four year old who has been diagnosed with a disease be a victim of a "very late abortion".

Somehow there is this perception on the left that everyone is stupid and they have the only answers.

I read the article. She found out about the baby’s condition at an earlier time, but there was still a ray of hope and she hung on. There is a fairly detailed description of what her child’s short life would have been like. Her child would have had a very difficult, very short life. Would have been severely damaged by her condition.

Her ramble is intended to justify her decision, but also reveals that she was very conflicted. As she said, her daughter was a wanted baby.

I agree with #5, particularly on extrapolating her obviously very rare situation into a blanket endorsement of late term abortion. Not everyone opting for it would do so because of a severely brain damaged baby.

As a society we spend fortunes and families suffer untold misery for these addicts but if it is unborn it can be killed. If science could devise a test to see if an unborn child had th drug addictive gene would it be ok to kill that fetus?

While I agree with most who have posted that this was indeed the taking of a life...

The real problem I have with this story is the fact that the left once again tries to find the exception to make the rule.

The overwhelming majority of abortions have NOTHING to do with a health issue of the child and EVERYTHING to do with the selfish mother who cannot say NO to an orgasm as easily as she can say YES to a murder.

I’ve read at least one argument claiming that the reason people react the way they do to laws like the Reproductive Health Act is because most people don’t realize why these abortions happen.

I´m sorry, but this poor tormented woman is mistaken. We do realize why these kinds of abortions happen. All too often the motivation bears no resemblance to hers.

So, if her´s is the only reason to perform late term abortions, then I must insist that all such abortions are followed by an autopsy to verify that her doctors diagnosis was correct. I think this is especially true if tax dollars are used to fund the procedure.

We must, in all cases, respect the deceased.

When I was pregnant, the doctors at Johns Hopkins wanted me to get an amniocentesis but I refused. They couldn’t understand why and I told them that the only reason to go thorough that dangerous procedure was to give me the option of an abortion if anything negative showed up on the test. And that I would accept whatever God gave to me in my child and would NEVER even consiider an abortion.

So, yes, Margaret. Your are a murderer.

Well Margot you sure put yourself in the role reserved for God by deciding who should be taken out of their misery and who should live. If I’m hit by a car and writhing in pain in the street you don’t get to put a bullet in my head to take me out of my misery; it’s still murder.

I’ll let greater minds than I to weigh in on earlier stages of pregnancy but as soon as that baby is viable within the range of survival out of the womb, a mercy killing is no different than putting a pillow to grandma when you decide her life is too difficult.

It’s still murder. Do I think that the son or daughter who ends the life of a suffering parent is morally equivalent to the thug on the street who kills for fun or because they blame others for their station in life? Absolutely not, so I do not lump you in with those who murder their perfectly healthy babies for convenience.

But in the end was is the child’s suffering you chose to avoid or your own? The commandment says thow shall not murder, it doesn’t say unless you really think it’s for the best.

Not calling you a murderer, Margot, calling your doctor a murderer, and calling you a person in wild distress who made an evil decision but was too zany to understand it. fyi, There are three elements to a mortal sin: a grave matter (abortion always meets this); full understanding (not in your case, you had no notion of what you were doing to someone else, youre a dope); and consent of the will (questionable with all those hormones and all that distress). Your doctor however should have and could have found you some way through, less than what you agreed to. Also: weakness we can all understand, but rationalization is worse, and teaching others to do likewise is very very very very bad.

First, I agree with others that apart from trusting God, this woman has no hope. What was an agonizing situation was only made worse by her choice. Now, not only must she mourn a child who will never see life, she must mourn and justify her own soul. She must be in deep pain after having made this decision with no way to redeem it.

That said, she is pouring out her heart because she is deeply guilty. Justifying herself will never give her peace.

I´m sure, as she talks about the support group that there are many in this situation. That´s so heartbreaking. But taking a life isn´t justified by our feelings. God is the Giver of life, only He has the right to take it. (War is a different issue.)

So, I´m so sorry for both Mrs. Finn and her family. The baby is in heaven with God, who sees no defect, only a life He created.
May she seek for God as much as she seeks to defend her choices.

Just because we can prolong life with medical interventions doesn’t mean we should.

And what does the question of prolonging life have to do with actively intervening to end life? "Yes Judge, I killed my wife because my mother shouldn´t have to live on a feeding tube."

The Left and reason cannot coexist. Their presence is mutually exclusive.

I often think we cut ourselves off from God when we have occasion to serve Him - via the baby with severe health challenges consider:
Matthew 25:42 The Sheep and the Goats
…41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’…
It isn´t easy to be a good Christian, and I am be very grateful for His mercy.

It seems to me that the article would have been much more effective if she had decided to murder the healthy second child at full term which is what we are talking about here not some unique circumstance used to try to justify your own decisions. I can see why she did what she did but to say that other healthy full term infants should die because one had a terrible deformity is insane. Try as you might this does nothing to add to the true debate about partial birth abortion.

I have a question for the leftist who think only perfect people have rights. Why do you bother with the Special Olympics? Why wasn´t stephen Hawking euthanized? Why don´t you go into all those children´s hospitals and pull the plugs on all those children who are not the perfect little beings that apparently are the only people worth anything at all. I am sick to death of these oh so compassionate people who have no regard for human life and yet pretend that they are so much better than the rest of us and have so much concern for the "children". If suffering is the criteria then let´s take it all to its logical conclusion. Pull the plugs on any child that is suffering, why bother to try saving any child if to experience pain is not acceptable and just who measures the pain that one human will endure to survive?

As a parent of a special needs son, and having associated with quite a few parents with special needs children, I can tell you that never once did we consider aborting Thomas. He was born with a number of various disorders and after 8 months of struggling with doctors who had no idea what was wrong he was diagnosed as having Williams syndrome. My wife and I spent some time reading up. The internet sites were filled with dire warnings of worst case individuals, one of the disorders increases the possibility that people with Williams syndrome could die at very early ages. I would not say that this woman should be called a murderer, but I would say that she missed out on a blessing, and there is no getting around the fact that she decided to kill her unborn baby. Some children are born and die far to soon, and those of us who have experienced this mourn for the rest of our lives for the loss, but still most find the experience to have been worth the pain for the love we are given and share for the period of time we have together.

I find that when someone is talking in generalizations as Trump was, those who cry "you´re talking about me!" often say so due to a guilty conscience. While Ms. Finn may have had her reason´s (good and bad) for having a late term abortion, many women abort perfectly healthy babies because it is inconvenient. I think that is who Trump was speaking to

Anyone has a right to call her whatever they desire. That is what the 1st amendment guarantees. Abortion isn´t a moral issue but a public policy that was enshrined by our goobernment via black robed demigods. Thus, redressing grievances about abortion is protected political speech.

It seems she´s trying to justify it and convince herself, not us... and isn´t doing a very good job of it. She is likely an atheist, because I´m sure no religion says it´s all right to make the death decision for your own child based on your feelings and their perceived feelings. I don´t judge her, because it was likely a traumatizing decision, and legal, but I´m not the one making those decisions at the final judgement.

My son was diagnosed with down syndrome by our obstetrician because the sonogram showed a femur longer than the other. My wife and I were pressured to have him aborted because "who would want a down syndrome baby" We informed them that the Lord gives a baby and it isn´t our right to kill that baby. We would be happy and love our son no matter how he was born. Sean is now a 28 year old professional dancer. All the doctors were wrong. I wonder how many people abort healthy babies because of misdiagnosis and a selfishness of not wanting a baby that isn´t perfect.

Bottom line -- YOU killed your baby so that you wouldn´t have to be inconvenienced with her medical care until she died naturally!!!!

Every day, babies are born with that disease and worse. Their parents love them and do everything they can for them until they die, because those babies are THEIR BABIES!!!!!

You are a MURDERER -- and WORSE -- because you can justify that you slaughtered your baby in your womb as some sort of good and honorable thing!!!! Instead of loving that baby, you caused it immeasurable pain and horror!!!! You are EVIL!!!!!!!!!! Period!!!!!

She seems to really be suffering over her decision. It will haunt her, regardless of how she tries to justify it now. When I was pregnant with my youngest, we were told that the chances were very good that he/she would have Downs Syndrome (I was 41). He was fine. I feel sorry for her, and for her lost chance at a miracle. Who knows what God had in store for her precious one.

We don´t sentence murderers to death if they are found to be mentally deficient due to insanity at the time they committed the murder.

Yet this women says it is legitimate to murder a child in the womb because she believes it will be born born mentally deficient.

This was probably one of the hardest decisions this woman would face in her life. However, late term or post birth abortion still allows for a baby to be killed just because the baby is: the undesired sex, color, is ugly, has a physical defect, is one of a multibirth, the mother suddenly wants revenge on the father or a host of other unacceptable reasons.

Victims with existing claims will have payments slashed in half while claims filed after Feb. 1 of this year would see deeper cuts of up to 70 percent, they said. September 11th Victim Compensation Fund special master Rupa Bhattacharyya said the fund received a “record number of claims” last year and that she’s “painfully aware of the inequity of the situation.”
