Plummeting insect numbers
´threaten collapse of nature´

Guardian [UK], by Damian Carrington

The world’s insects are hurtling down the path to extinction, threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles. The total mass of insects is falling by a precipitous 2.5% a year, according to the best data available, suggesting they could vanish within a century. The planet is at the start of a sixth mass extinction in its history, with huge losses already

I live in Florida, land of bugs and snakes. I haven´t seen any reduction in palmetto bugs, spiders or the little lizards that feast on them. I really, really wouldn´t mind if the flies and mosquitoes and ticks left the planet for good.

My initial response to this is "I doubt it." and I have no basis for that evaluation besides my summative evaluation of science related to global warming as poorly designed and executed bad thinking and outright lies.

That is unfortunate and potentially dangerous. Like for the boy who cried wolf, if a real wolf appears, no one believes it. It is sad that "science" has discredited itself to the point where we cannot implicitly trust it.

The article suggests we have to change the way we grow food, and that overpopulation and over-consumption by humans is the problem (that from failed Cassandra Paul Ehrlich).

No problem. Less food, fewer people, and skinnier happier people.

We can look to socialist paradises to see how well this works. Venezuelans, for example, lost an average of 24 lbs last year! How happy they must be!

The demise of the bugs "is thought to be" because of climate change, of course. Which makes it all our fault. Just us.

Articles like this one really bug me.

American Spectator, by Robert Stacy McCain    Original Article

Four below zero — that’s how cold it was at 2 a.m. in Chicago on Jan. 29, when actor Jussie Smollett claims he was the victim of a racist, homophobic hate crime perpetrated by two white Trump supporters. There were many reasons to be skeptical of Smollett’s story, but the fact that Chicago was experiencing a “polar vortex” of arctic cold was high on the list of doubts. Even if you could believe that two right-wingers would be stalking a not-very-famous actor in downtown Chicago, waiting for a chance to attack him

Democrats are tearing

Democrats are fighting mad — at each other. For once, President Trump is not the prime target of their rage. Amazon’s decision to scrap plans for an HQ2 campus in New York sent the circular firing squad into action. The blue-on-blue attacks pit the far left against the far, far left in yet another front of the party’s civil war. In addition to sharp differences about a Green New Deal, taxes, socialism, Medicare-for-all and open borders, Dems are now split over how and whether government should work with the private sector to create jobs and boost the tax base.

Six illegal immigrants with ties to a Mexican drug cartel — a rival of the powerful Sinaloa cartel, whose notorious leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was convicted last week — were arrested in an elaborate drug trafficking operation in North Carolina, according to reports. The massive drug operation included transporting large amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine across state lines — for instance, from Texas to Georgia and North Carolina, WSOC reported. The feds identified the suspects as Oscar Rangel-Gutierrez, Regulo Rangel-Gutierrez, Francisco Garcia-Martinez, Rodolfo Martinez, Raul Rangel-Gutierrez and Rigoberto Rangel-Gutierrez.

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced he would declare the situation at the border to be a national emergency to enable him to move previously allocated money to fund a border wall. This was a long-telegraphed punch that had already sent leftists and some Republicans clutching their pearls since the idea was first floated weeks ago. Lost in all of this is the fact that this action, while taken by the president, is 100 percent the fault of Congress. I have to say at the outset, I want a wall built where a wall is needed.

President Donald Trump said yes to the budget bill to keep open government, but then bypassed Congress and declared a national emergency to free up funding to build his long-promised border wall. And on the other side of town, Beto O’Rourke — Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke — says let’s go ahead and rip ‘em all down. The campaign lines for 2020 and beyond couldn’t be any clearer. “Would you, if you could, would you take the wall down here — knock it down?” asked MSNBC’s Chris Hayes to O’Rourke, in reference to existing border fencing. “Yes, absolutely,” O’Rourke said. “I’d take the wall down.”

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., was once again reminded that she exaggerated her Native American ancestry and was heckled during a campaign stop in Georgia. While introducing herself to a crowd of about 1,000 supporters in a Lawrenceville high school, a man shouted “Why did you lie?" Ever wonder why people hate lawyers? Consider Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s non-denial denial of his participation in discussions of an attempted coup against the duly elected president of the United States. The story is being given a second life thanks to the hype surrounding the rollout of a new book by Andrew McCabe, the former deputy director of the FBI. McCabe, of course, was fired after an inspector general investigation found that he leaked investigative information and then lied about it. He has been referred to the Justice Department for consideration of a false-statements prosecution.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “If my fellow citizens want to go to hell, I will help them. It is my job.” What he was expressing is the limited role of courts in challenges to federal law. It is not their task as judges to sit as a super legislature to question the priorities or policies of the political branches. They will gladly send Congress to hell. It only needs to be clear about the destination. In the matter of the border wall, Congress could not have been more clear where it was heading.

The percentage of government workers who belong to a union dipped again in 2018 and has hit a 40-year low. Just 33.9 percent of government workers now belong to a union, according to government figures, the lowest point since 1978, and down from a peak of 38.7 percent in the 1990s. Behind those numbers has been the failure of government labor groups to bounce back from a steep decline in government employment that began in 2009. That year, unions boasted 7.897 million government workers. Last year, however, just 7.162 million workers

Empire actor Jussie Smollet could receive prison time if he is found to have filed a false report with the Chicago Police Department regarding his alleged attack last month. Chicago police said Saturday the investigation into the attack reported by Smollett has “shifted” due to information received from two brothers arrested in the case then released, and police want to interview the “Empire” actor again. Joe Biden isn´t in the 2020 presidential race yet, but he´s making clear at an international gathering that he thinks President Trump has undermined America´s ability to claim moral leadership. The former vice president says the US doesn´t want to turn its back on its closest allies and cherishes democracy, the rule of law and a free press. Biden tells the Munich Security Conference that the America he sees ´stands up to the aggression of dictators and against strongmen who rule by coercion, corruption and violence.´ He says his country ´values basic human decency, not snatching children from their parents
