Netflix as Death Cult
PJ Media, by David P. Goldman [Spengler]

Stop believing in God, G.K. Chesterton is misquoted, and you will believe in anything. A suggested corollary: Stop believing in eternal life and you will be obsessed with death. Human beings can’t bear mortality without the hope of immortality. As we abandon the old faiths, we confront our own mortality naked and afraid. That, I think, explains the extraordinary surge in the horror genre during the past twenty years. It also helps explain the improbably high valuation of Netflix stock. I believe the quote is as follows: "When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything." The short version that opens the article says essentially the same thing, and judging by the world around us, it is demonstrably true.

This is a somewhat disappointing essay from the preternaturally concise Spengler. I hold his thoughts on monetary policy and Far Eastern socioeconomic relationships in high regard. This piece is, however, fatally flawed from the blocks.
I can´t see how he´d allow himself to be published stating: Human beings can’t bear mortality without the hope of immortality. The set he refers to as human beings includes many who may have, in ages past or present, borne their lives without certainty of a life to follow. What, exactly, does not being able to bear mean - that one dies? If so, mortally or immortally?

FTA: “We despise the traditions that we received from our forebears, and propose to teach nothing at all to our children (not even the sex of their birth, if we are Kate Hudson).”

Satan’s minions on the Left are hell-bent to smash Western civilization and return mankind to the paganism prevailing before Christ. Instead of a society based on the worth of every individually Created life, they offer infanticide for inconvenient pregnancies and euthanasia for the old and infirm. A person’s worth is based on what they can contribute to the collective and once they no longer produce, they no longer have value. Where did this begin?

“We despise the traditions that we received from our forebears…” When I read this line, I could not help but think of our ongoing discussions regarding Catholicism v. Protestantism. (Disclaimer: I am not questioning the faith or love of God professed by modern Protestants.)

Five hundred years ago Martin Luther rejected Sacred Tradition as the guide to Holy Scripture and replaced it with personal interpretation. He separated Faith from the Holy Works that puts flesh upon the Word of God in the world. He disconnected the Grace of God from the free will of man; proposing a God who dispenses His saving Grace in a random way, rather than man seeking and finding, knocking and the door opening, asking and receiving. Luther did not “reform” Christianity; instead he was the first to reject the wisdom held in Tradition and took the first steps toward man embracing “the delusion that we can invent our own identities.”

As a Catholic I keenly feel the importance for Christians to be united. Come home to Rome.

Interesting article. I gave up horror when Frankenstein, the Mummy, and Dracula went out of fashion. I also do not have Netflix or desire to and I do not miss it. I can’t justify filling my head with the garbage that is produced today. Not trying to be self-righteous but there is more than enough evil in the world to scare anyone. I don’t need to fill my head and heart with evil that is imagined.

#11, I respect you and believe we have much in common. However, your comment regarding the reformation was puzzling. We all have different beliefs and I respect yours and you are right in that Luther rejected sacred traditions for the clear teaching of Jesus Christ in the Bible which tells us that our salvation is a gift of God, not works and all we need do is accept and believe on Him for salvation. It is not in traditions or anything we or others can do for us. It is a private decision made freely between God and ourselves without intercession by anyone or anything else. For more than 500 years followers of Martin Luther and others have believed and accepted the truth of the Scriptures without filter or any man made traditions. We have put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone.

We still have Netflix. There are enough movies and documentaries to chose from to make it worthwhile. [caution: spoilers] We saw Bird Box and I think it was a suspenseful movie with very good acting, but I don´t think it stressed the afterlife or the spiritual origins of the entities that Spengler mentions. It was viewed as one of the possibilities by one character, but in the end, it left me hanging as to what the thing was, and why for example, psychos could function in that environment.

Ultimately, I think it was a boiler plate horror-chick flick that checked off all the modern diversity boxes. I have noticed females absolutely love this movie. In fact, I found it amazing that a man wrote the screenplay. Watch it if you are interested in seeing some fine performances, but don´t expect a thought provoking plot.

Netflix is in the business of entertainment. If something it provides is not your cup of tea there are plenty, and I mean plenty, of other shows to pick from. It is a way to be able to watch a lot of shows and movies from the comfort of your couch. Find what you like, ignore the rest, get over it.

My two newest must sees are "Incredibles 2" and "Ant Man and The Wasp." Then it´s back to "When Calls the Heart."

#11#13- With respect for differing Judeo-Christian beliefs, this family’s personal beliefs are best expressed by Martin Luther on the evening of April 18, 1521 when he appeared before Emperor Charles V and various other officials of church and state in the city of Worms: “Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures and by clear reason, I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. Amen.” Indeed, #13, “We have put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone.”

#11 & 13 – My comment about the Reformation was made in context of the article, which is really neither about Netflix or zombies; it is about the entertainment subject matter now chosen by Western civilization being produced and consumed. The author notes that modern man has overthrown all tradition, replacing them with the notion that individuals can be their own gods up to rejecting and redefining their born physical sex. The individual and his conscious reigns supreme. The question before us is; how is does an individual form his conscience, with what information and guided by whom?

What Luther, and his followers, have labeled a “filter” or “man-made traditions” is what Catholics consider the Full Deposit of Faith or the Sacred Tradition, which organically came into being during the first three centuries of Christianity. Despite targeted and violent persecution, the letters of Paul and the Apostles, the Acts of the Apostles and Gospels (more than Matthew, Luke, Mark and John), along with the writings of the first-generation disciples of the Apostles (Church Fathers) were spread throughout the Roman empire. No two communities had the same canon due to the secrecy required. The writings of the Church Fathers are vital to understanding the Books included in the Canon, for not every parable is explained in the Gospels. There are many references where Jesus privately explained the meanings to the Apostles and they handed down these orally to their disciples. It was this Sacred Tradition that informed the Council of Nicaea in their selection of which books would be included in The Bible. You hold The Bible as your sole source, yet reject the source that produced The Bible.

When Luther stated, “I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience,” he was rejecting 1,500 years of the same interpretation of Holy Scripture shared by all Christians. He set the example for personal interpretation and the primacy of individual conscience. He removed the external yard-stick that provided guard rails for understanding the Fullness of Faith. Within a dozen years someone else had a different interpretation than Luther, and so on down the centuries until there are tens of thousands of interpretations of what it means to be a Christian.

The world has noticed and the big take-away is that the individual can determine what is “truth” for themselves, and it is no better or worse than the “truth” of the other guy. It has led, after 500 years, to our hedonistic society where the individual determines his own private “truth”. Did Luther intend this outcome? Of course not. I believe he was sincere in serving Christ, but his ego won out and instead he taught a great error. That error reverberates down to our times until we have people forming their consciences via the “progressive” entertainment industry.

Lutherans reject so-called “man-made” traditions, but you readily follow the personal interpretation of one man as your own. I follow the same interpretation of Holy Scripture taught by the Apostles and Church Fathers. Luther redacted and reduced Christianity by stripping away Sacred Tradition, holy works and the free will of man. I love my Protestant brothers and sisters in Christ, and yet saddened that you do not know the Fullness of the Faith.

Blessings to Rinktum and Harlowe.

In regards to Protestants...the word, of course, comes from Protest. It sprang from centuries of Roman Catholic corruption. What sparked the 1517 reformation was not a sincere German leading people in a new form of doctrine; it was rather a man who deeply studied the Scriptures, even translating them from the original languages into the vernacular. The trigger, of course, was the sale of indulgences, whereby a bishop, wishing to pay off some debts, got permission to sell indulgences with the promise that such a purchase would spring a soul into heaven. Protestants use the sola scriptura, sola fide, and sola gratia basis for their doctrine; not something called sacred traditions. These traditions including declarations by councils and popes, are given equal weight as Scripture. Thus we find in the Council of Trent the following declaration regarding salvation:

CANON IX. If any one shall say, that by faith alone the impious is justified; so as to mean that nothing else is required to co-operate in order unto obtaining the grace of justification, and that it is not in any respect necessary that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema. (Council of Trent, Sixth Session [1547], Decree concerning Justification [trans. Theodore Alois Buckley])

Such a declaration, while taken to be equal to Scripture by the RC Church, is a direct contradiction to the Bible´s Ephesians 2:8-9.

#20 – Betrayal and corruption has been with the Church since Judas’ kiss and Peter’s thrice denial. Down through centuries the Holy Spirit has raised up great reformers. They all faced resistance from the curia and reviled in their own lifetimes. For some they never saw their reforms enacted, yet those reforms did take place. The Life of the Church is bigger than any one us, but each has a role in its enduring sanctity while remaining under its Authority. An Authority given by Christ to Peter, the Rock upon which the Church is built, and continues to be built every day.

Fr. Martin Luther possessed great intellect and was, rightly, scandalized by some very worldly actions by bishops and priests. However, he conflated earthly corruption with possible corruption in the interpretation of Scripture. In his hubris he refused to submit to the discipline of the Church and put faith in his own personal interpretation. He had to distinguish this new theology and did so by redacting teachings that had been taught by the Apostles; Faith and Action, Grace and Free Will, Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” James 2:14, followed by “So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:17

Ephesians 2:8-9 refers to the Saving Power of Christ’s Death and Resurrection. That is the Gift waiting for everyone. Our God gave us free will and He will not impose Himself on any one. From the Cross, Christ cried, “I thirst.” He thirsts for souls. He waits for us to let Him in. Action is required of us; we must accept the Gift.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him and he with me.” Rev 3:20

Now for the charming topics of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Ed Markey, and the so-called “Green New Deal.” If ever there was a multi-pronged way to snatch Depression from the Jaws of prosperity, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez seems to have hit upon it. Ms. AOC has discovered that the planet is warming to an alarming degree. Never mind that she is in no sense a scientist. Never mind that many climatologists say that climate change is a hoax — and many say it’s not a hoax at all. Never mind that there are many different possible causes of climate change and that human activity

Conservative CNN host S.E. Cupp took aim at Republican lawmakers in the opening of her Saturday evening television show, slamming them for apparently abandoning their traditional “principles” in support of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration regarding the United States’ border with Mexico. “Knock, knock Republicans, anybody home?” Cupp, who identifies as a Republican but has been a staunch critic of Trump, said. “Any Republicans in Washington have a problem with this? Remember conservatism? Limited government? You know, your principles?” she asked in frustration.

Failed Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton warned of “real national emergencies” that included “Americans dying for lack of health care,” despite Obamacare remaining in place. Clinton posted a message Monday appearing to take aim at President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the U.S. southern border. She offered four alternative “real national emergencies.” The real national emergencies: – Relentless gun violence. – Children separated from their families at the border. – Climate change. – Americans dying for lack of health care. Clinton identified “real national emergencies” as: – Relentless gun violence

A lot of Americans are justifiably angry that disgraced FBI official Andrew McCabe is doing a book tour rather than a stretch in some federal penitentiary. He has committed perjury on multiple occasions, participated in an attempt to alter the outcome of a national election, and colluded with other rogue bureaucrats to remove a duly elected president from power. But there is a bright and shiny silver lining to this dingy cloud of deep state skullduggery: Donald Trump still resides in the White House while Hillary Clinton stumbles around her Chappaqua mansion in a muumuu hugging a fifth of Glenfiddich.

CBS journalist Lara Logan on Friday unleashed a blistering, uncensored attack on the extreme liberal bias polluting America´s news outlets. Logan derided the “horses**t” “propagandist” press that had no interest in fairness. Appearing on Mike Drop, the podcast of former Navy SEAL Mike Ritland, the foreign affairs correspondent and occasional 60 Minutes reporter berated slanted coverage in a way rarely seen by those in the mainstream press: “We’ve become political activists in a sense. And some could argue, propagandists, right?”

The “we reported the Jussie Smollett case responsibly” contention has been blasted to smithereens. Twitter accounts and headlines in the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times reported as fact Jussie Smollett’s wildly implausible allegations, and many other journalists did so as well, not to mention the innumerable activists and celebrities who piled on. So, a question for all of the above. Why did you believe Jussie Smollett? Let’s try to catalogue the red flags. Had you ever heard of Jussie Smollett before the alleged January 29 attack? Do you think it likely

For Sens. Kamala D. Harris and Cory A. Booker, Democratic presidential candidates who were promoting an anti-lynching bill, the “attack” on actor Jussie Smollett in Chicago looked like a horrible yet opportune talking point. Instead, the apparent hoax is turning out to be a warning to 2020 Democratic candidates about singling out people for martyrdom, including the woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh of sexual assault and the drum-banging American Indian who confronted Catholic high school students on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In the rush to speak too soon about the Smollett
