Senate passes bill guaranteeing back pay
for workers after shutdown ends

The Senate had good news and bad news for the 800,000 federal employees who won’t get paychecks on Friday because of the partial government shutdown: Yes, they will be paid, but no, not until there’s a deal to restore funding. The mixed news came Thursday afternoon, when senators voted unanimously to authorize the eventual post-shutdown funding of back pay. Once the House passes its own bill, President Trump will sign it, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in calling the measure to a voice vote. “I had an opportunity to talk to President Trump a few moments ago, and wanted

So only 25% of the government was shut down. I don’t know anyone who’s life has been affected by this shutdown.

Call me cynical but there really was never a question about backpay to begin with. They were always going to get paid. This is purely a CYA bill.

If they will be paid but not working, that is called welfare. Subtract the amount from their pensions.

Shouldn´t all the furloughed workers be enjoying their "f-unemployment"? That´s what Obama told regular American workers when his policies were destroying (by design) their jobs.

Maybe these government workers whose pay far exceeds that of their private sector counterparts will learn strategies so they´re not living paycheck to paycheck; although very few had actually missed a check until this week. Just the usual lies that we´ve come to expect.

Why do they get back pay for not working? In the public sector we get laid off or downsized and collect unemployment until recalled or rehired. Why can´t they? Why are these overpaid, under worked nonessential government employees with extravagant benefits so special? The Federal government has become nothing more than a giant affirmative action program IMHO!

Eighty three percent of the budget is funded, period. Seventeen percent is not. The twenty five percent number is misleading by design. Of the four major shutdowns, and every minor shutdown (there have been thirty total since 1976); those furloughed and those who work without paychecks have been fully paid when the discretionary spending of the budget (which right now is 17 percent) is fully funded. Every. Single. Time.

As the politicians like Mitch continue to focus on the critical importance of the government and that without it, we all die because actually limiting its power per the Constitution would make the sun explode five billion years early, the "immoral" wall which has worked brilliantly throughout history every single time it´s tried is at a ridiculous political stalemate because Orange Man Bad.

If it is ever built though, you can count on a Trojan Burrito gift from the southern border that will fool most voters, both the GOP and Marxists and then issue will be which salsa to use. While that future salsa debate ensues, the MS-13 gangs, drug lords, human traffickers, and terrorists will pop out of the burrito and enter illegally anyway. Yes, we ARE that stupid.

Workers who now are being paid will be working at HALF PAY and those non essential who are not working will be getting paid for not working. DUMB. Eliminate all Non essentials by freezing all new personnel until all non essentials are eliminated. Let them go to work like the rest of us who WORK to get opaid.....Mick

So, the Democrats use this as a standard ploy all the time, which advances their political agenda, while inconveniencing the Federal workers who depend on work to put food on their table, just like all the rest of us. But, oh, the Demonrats will make all this OK by promising those affected with "back pay" to make up for using them like circus props in their game of thrones with the White House. Interesting that this never happens when the Republicans run the House.

Fire them all and eliminate their positions! Let them get on with their lives instead of stringing them along. So all you citizen journalists out there who whine about your FOIA requests not being answered,m blame it on all those non-essential employees. Yeah, because the private sector is so great that is why the federal government had to create an agency just to review the tainted food being sold to the US Army in World War 1. Let´s get rid of agencies like the FAA because we all know airlines only care about the safety of their passengers and not the bottom line.

With the exception of the DoD and maybe the VA (no mention of Veterans in the Constitution for those who want to be Constitution pure) - useless departments like Labor, Ed and HHS are funded - feel better?

Then what is the point of the shutdown? 25% of the government (or 17% h/t to gone2pot) gets a weeks of paid for not working. How does that force anyone to come to the table with a reasonable attitude? This 25% are 90%+ dems so the dems who refuse to discuss funding the wall are just taking care of their own.
Usually, when trying to force -force being the key word- the other side do something they don´t want to do you do something that causes them pain.
Only in the government does forcing people to get paid for not working constitute causing pain.

Feds have always gotten back pay after these shutdowns. Half the fed employees are non essential year round. The only reason we have so many fed employees because it is a leftist jobs program. You have tons of duplicate services within agencies.

Not a mortgage company or lender would dare foreclose on a fed employee now. All they need to do is call their lender, landlord or whoever. They will get a break now

This bill simply removes the last argument that the democrats had for blaming Donald Trump for their shutdown. Nancy was attempting to get the country to cry for all of those poor government workers who had rent to pay, college loans to pay back or feed their children. Now the democrats own it totally and nobody is suffering.

Paying government workers for doing nothing is not just a phenomenon of this shutdown, we do it all the time. Tracking the users of online pornography sites would bust several hundred thousand of them. Look behind any government facility and your odds of observing a group of them outside smoking are a good bet.

The media never mentions the amount of salary which these Federal employees receive, nor do they question why some of these employees choose to live, ´´paycheck to paycheck.´´ Money management should again be taught by parents and in the school system. ...After all, every American child used to learn wise lessons from children´s books, movies and cartoons, including the one that even squirrels know to store away nuts for the winter.

Sorry, not much sympathy for those who receive sizeable salaries, which will be reimbursed, yet do not plan ahead financially for the inevitable, ´rainy day,´ which everyone experiences at one time or another.

While I agree with #6 et al, this is probably the best (or least bad) "at this juncture" (as Dana Carvey/Bush 41 would say).

Most banks and credit unions are offering interest-free or low-cost loans to tide these workers over until things are settled, so any Dem / media whining is irrelevant.

Since the beginning of the Obama presidency, the increasingly powerful far Left has set out to follow his call to “remake America.” This ambitious effort goes far beyond Obamacare. The far Left is seeking expansion of the administrative state, higher taxes, increases in regulations and more social programs funded with more taxpayer dollars. The transformation indisputably starts at the ballot box. Americans would do well to realize that significant changes to the way we vote are the lynchpin of a larger strategy to elect more Democrats who will push America further leftward. (snip) In an editorial on the scandal, the New York Times singled out Harvard University for its “special admissions preferences and back doors for certain applicants.” This is the same New York Times, however, that published an entirely uncritical article three years prior headlined, “Malia Obama Rebels, Sort of, by Choosing Harvard.” Malia is the fourth member of the Obama family to attend that august university, none

Ferguson, Mo. - Two young men were found dead inside torched cars. Three others died of apparent suicides. Another collapsed on a bus, his death ruled an overdose. Six deaths, all involving men with connections to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, drew attention on social media and speculation in the activist community that something sinister was at play. Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officer´s fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.

It´s Spring Break in Miami, and fists are flying. A shocking video has emerged on social media over the weekend showing a colossal brawl involving dozens of scantily-clad women in South Beach. The cellphone recording, which was uploaded to the video-sharing site FlyHeight.com on Sunday, shows young women dressed in swimsuits and brightly colored beach coverups mercilessly pummeling one another in the middle of the road. A row of vehicles, including a party bus, repeatedly honk for the brawlers to disperse, but they pay little attention to the din as they continue to wallop one another.

Twelve Senate Republicans stopped Donald Trump from invoking a national emergency to pay for a wall on the southern border last Friday…three times as many senators than needed to pass it. That’s the good news. The bad news? Even more Republicans will be needed to override Trump’s veto. What’s worse is the fact that if more Republicans don’t join Democrats in overriding this veto they will provide Trump even more power when he has a history of not acting in the best interest of our country.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld took aim at President Trump on Saturday, declaring his intention to win the Republican primary. The 73-year-old White House hopeful, who ran as the vice presidential nominee in 2016 for the Libertarian Party, said that he has the experience and the temperament needed to take on someone like Trump, whom he says fundamentally lacks the basic knowledge required by the office. "Before he was elected president of the United States, he was a New York City and Palm Beach socialite judging beauty contests and employed in the reality television industry. That´s no preparation, with all

Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota poses an interesting case study in American cultural or civilizational consciousness. She is the first congressional representative to wear a scarf around her head, and that scarf is for some a symbol of the breadth and depth of our acceptance of others. For others, it is a symbol of alienation and rejection of the America she claims — simply by holding office — to represent. (snip) her comments blew her cover. She cannot simply be seen as a highly motivated immigrant
