Is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Really the Democratic Future?

City Journal, by Howard Husock

Original Article

There is little doubt that Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing parts of Queens and the Bronx, is being treated as a leader of a new Democratic swing to the left. Nor is there much doubt that the media-savvy upset winner in New York’s 14th congressional district combines personal charisma with a knack for policy packaging, as with her “Green New Deal.” But before she’s anointed as representative of a political trend, it’s worth looking closely at how many—or how few—votes she received compared with other members of Congress, including moderate Democrats, and what that says about a little-discussed aspect

Today’s cartoon could not be more perfect.

Do you remember GaryTrudeau depicted George W. Bush as a floating feather? Airhead Alexandria is now going to be depicted as a balloon . Just… Perfect.

A better question will be ´How many in her district pay income taxes´.? I doubt the number will rise to double digits.

Gee, I hope so. An air-headed dead end.

Will Elites Ever Respect Voters´
Decisions on Brexit and Trump?

It was no coincidence that Donald Trump scheduled a trip to Britain to promote one of his golf courses in Scotland, on June 23, 2016. That was the day of the Brexit referendum in which 52 percent of the electorate --17.4 million voters, more than any party has ever won in a general election -- voted for the UK to leave the European Union. Candidate Trump´s earlier endorsement of Brexit was criticized by elevated opinion as an unfriendly interference in another nation´s internal affairs, although few, if any, had similarly criticized then-President Barack Obama for having urged Britons to vote "remain"

Yet another Trump ´bombshell´

Another leak about President Trump, supposedly from federal prosecutors, and another media freakout. This one was different from the earlier ones in its seriousness. Two reporters from BuzzFeed, citing two anonymous law enforcement officials, reported that Trump had instructed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, or at least that this accusation had been passed on to special counsel Robert Mueller. In a late Friday night news dump 24 hours after this "scoop," Mueller released a statement that the whole thing was a big hoax — "not accurate." We had drafted an editorial warning

Bloomberg Businessweek spent more than a year reporting on an alleged breach of U.S. computer infrastructure by China -- a hardware hack supposedly affecting Apple, Amazon, Supermicro and nearly 30 other companies. That story was published on Oct. 4 under the headline “The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies.” More than three months later, reporting on the story continues. An email obtained by the Erik Wemple Blog shows that Jordan Robertson, who wrote the story with Michael Riley, recently contacted a former Apple employee with a request: I’m a reporter with Bloomberg Businessweek in Washington.

Last month, the downtown San Diego franchise of the Burgerim restaurant chain closed its doors, contending that chaotic conditions caused by large numbers of homeless people in and around nearby Horton Plaza Park had driven customers away and made it impossible to operate. The shuttering of the Burgerim location was a warning signal to the San Diego business community — and to city hall, too. Burgerim would not be leaving quietly. The franchisee, backed by parent company Burgerim USA, intended to sue in state court, claiming that neither its landlord nor the city of San Diego

I don’t know much about Gladys Knight’s politics, but I do know that she’s a freedom-loving patriot. The Motown legend generated headlines across the country when she announced that she would be performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Atlanta. “I am here today and on Sunday, Feb. 3 to give the anthem back its voice, to stand for that historic choice of words, the way it unites us when we hear it and to free it from the same prejudices and struggles I have fought long and hard for all my life,” she wrote in a statement to Variety.

The White House on Friday adamantly denied House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claim that it leaked plans for a delegation´s proposed commercial flight to Afghanistan, as details from a State Department cable cautioning her office about the trip raised further questions about the allegation. Pelosi’s office, however, maintained that the administration had in fact leaked the details to the media. “We were contacted by reporters this morning with multiple Administration sources saying that the CODEL was proceeding on commercial air,” spokesman Drew Hammill told Fox News. Hammill had said earlier Friday that Trump

Beto O´Rourke is lost. The former Democratic congressman, who unsuccessfully challenged Ted Cruz in last year´s election, has spent the last few weeks in a confused and melancholy state. Something possessed him to share images from a recent dental cleaning, perhaps the grossest introduction of a potential presidential candidate in the nation´s history. He gave an interview to the Washington Post where the only specific plank in his immigration platform was opposition to President Trump´s border wall. In the same interview, he mused that the Constitution may no longer apply to the United States, since we´re an "empire"

Brexit: ‘No Deal’ Is Ideal

The defeat in Parliament of Prime Minister May’s compromise with Europe opens the way to true independence for Britain. It presents the chance for a redemption of the referendum of June 2016, when Britons were asked “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” and 51.89% answered “Leave the European Union.” It is too soon to declare mission accomplished. The future can still be lost, but Britain just took a giant step in the right direction. It makes clear that Britain’s future lies with a “no deal” Brexit.

I appreciate David’s response to my column on the FBI counterintelligence investigation of Trump, but unfortunately don’t find it persuasive. David emphasizes how the regulations governing a counterintelligence investigation focus on the activity of the foreign power. Yeah, sure. But that’s why the Times story was so explosive. It reported on a counterintelligence investigation of Trump himself, who is obviously not a foreigner, but the duly elected president of the United States. The Times story says that the FBI feared Trump might have been a witting or unwitting agent of the Russians.

The internet expands the bounds of acceptable discourse, so ideas considered out of bounds not long ago now rocket toward widespread acceptability. See: cannabis legalization, government-run health care, white nationalism and, of course, the flat-earthers. Yet there’s one political shore that remains stubbornly beyond the horizon. It’s an idea almost nobody in mainstream politics will address, other than to hurl the label as a bloody cudgel. I’m talking about opening up America’s borders to everyone who wants to move here.
