Billy F. Gibbons: “ZZ Top Has Been 50
Years of Making It Up As We Go Along”

Texas Monthly, by Andy Langer

Original Article

ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons brought in 2019 onstage, playing guitar with his normal New Year’s Eve running buddies: Willie Nelson & Family. Gibbons has been a not-so-surprise special guest at a half-dozen of Nelson’s annual new year’s performances at Austin’s ACL Live. And while this year Gibbons unfurled a long solo on Nelson’s version of “Texas Flood,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says he’s generally just happy to have the best seat in the house to watch Willie play guitar. “I think he’s underrated as a soloist,” Gibbons

ZZ Top has been experimenting with their music ever since Tres Hombres. Listen to Snappy Kakky and Sheik from that album. The fact that they are a power trio is what helped keep them intact. Groups with four or more members are bound to lose a member or two over the years. Originally ZZ Top was supposed to be a four member group, with a keyboardist, but they settled on three members and did keyboards on their studio work.

Grew up around Billy in Houston playing music since the 60s . My memories of him driving his 66 Dodge Dart around Pasadena and Spring Branch are still fresh. His love for offshore fishing and good TEXMEX food. It all makes the entire package of the King of Cool that is Billy F Gibbons. A Texas Native treasure as well as a World treasure. I say How How How have Mercy.

In the sixties I did gigs with my band making money through college, UL Lafayette, La. (my income) until I was drafted in the Army in 1968. We played gigs in a club (dive) called the Swinging Machine. When I returned home in late 1969 the club had changed it´s name to Willie Purples. On one occasion there were posters of a band ZZ Top that would be playing there. I thought to myself who names themselves that and does it mean something?
The night I went to Willie Purples the ´little ole band from Texas´ looked like kids and very much pre-hobo beards and very youthful looking. A $1.50 got me in the door and I believe all the songs were going to become the album Rio Grande Mud.
Many years later I got to see them three more times evolving into what you see today. Watching Billy Gibbons started me playing my Gibson Les Paul again influenced by ´the Reverend´ and ZZ Top.
I´ve seen Willie Nelson many times but I have to say I tired of him and he´s more of a song writer than a singing talent but he is a Texas legend.

I love Billy Gibbon´s playing. I´ve been playing guitar since 1977 and ZZ Top always plays right in the pocket. I played the solo from La Grange to my bandmates and floored them-I told them I wish I had written it, not learned it. I Need You Tonite....Cheap Sunglasses...Rough Boy....it´s all good!

I remember their songs hitting the airwaves in the 70´s. A new ´metal cowboy´ kind of music that was a breath of fresh air from the tightly controlled bands of the day. It´s amazing they´ve remained relevant for 50 years.

A nine-foot sculpture depicting the Saudi Arabian flag in the shape of a piece of candy is reportedly being removed from its grounds near the 9/11 memorial in New York City after facing backlash. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said they’d relocate the installation, which features the words “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the prophet” in Arabic, after many felt its proximity to Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial was insulting and insensitive. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers in the Sept. 11 attack on the United States were Saudi nationalists,

In the daily headlines, the government shutdown—now the longest in American history—is reported as a clash between two uncompromising forces: President Trump and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In this battle, however, the most important general may be the one who’s escaped almost all notice. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has put on full display his penchant for knowing when the best course is to do nothing. In the received wisdom, because Mr. Trump infamously welcomed a shutdown in December’s televised and contentious Oval Office meeting with Mrs. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, he gets all the blame for it.

Willie Nelson’s list of musical collaborators is essentially a timeline of popular music. Frank Sinatra? Wynton Marsalis? Ray Charles? Julio Iglesias? Check, check, check, check. Norah Jones, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, even Snoop Dogg? Yep. Basically every country star who ever passed through Nashville and stopped off in Texas? Of course. Yet somehow, during the course of his illustrious and highly collaborative career, there’s one epic name that Willie hadn’t added to his list: King George Strait, his fellow Texan great, whose stature rivals Willie’s when it comes to the names that have defined country music.

Women Don’t Belong in Combat Units
Wall Street Journal, by Heather MacDonald    Original Article

The Obama-era policy of integrating women into ground combat units is a misguided social experiment that threatens military readiness and wastes resources in the service of a political agenda. The next defense secretary should end it. In September 2015 the Marine Corps released a study comparing the performance of gender-integrated and male-only infantry units in simulated combat. The all-male teams greatly outperformed the integrated teams, whether on shooting, surmounting obstacles or evacuating casualties. Female Marines were injured at more than six times the rate of men during preliminary training—unsurprising, since men’s higher testosterone levels produce stronger bones and muscles.

Like Representative Rashida Tlaib, Bella Abzug was not one to mince words in the course of political combat. In 1973, as the murk of Watergate engulfed Richard Nixon, the feisty Democratic congresswoman from New York punched Speaker Carl Albert in the chest, in his account, and told him: “Get off your goddamned ass, and we can take this presidency!” As today, the Watergate era was a time of generational and stylistic change in the House of Representatives. Younger red-hot liberals saw impeachment as a necessary and urgent course of action, while wary elders viewed it

We have a couple of updates today. One about a movie. One about a museum. I told you recently that, based on his perusal of the script and glimpse at the trailer, local lawyer Harry Whittington had some concerns about “Vice,” the current unflattering movie about ex-Veep Dick Cheney. Whittington has some personal stake in the movie because he’s in the movie. He’s the local man who was shot by Cheney in a 2006 South Texas quail hunting accident. It’s a scene in the movie, and now that Whittington has seen the scene, he’s even more convinced it’s inaccurate.

Earl Scruggs revolutionized the way we play and appreciate the banjo today. Scruggs, who was born 95 years ago this month, developed his own three-finger method of picking the five-string banjo – an approach so radical it´s now widely referred to as "Scruggs style." That style, which features picks attached to the thumb, index finger and middle finger, has become a defining characteristic of bluegrass music and the most popular style of playing banjo in the genre. Google dedicated an animated Doodle to Scruggs on Friday, highlighting his finger-picking method, which helped elevate the status of the banjo

Anti-cop activist Shaun King says that his involvement in the campaign around the Jazmine Barnes murder was not driven by reports that a white man had killed the seven-year-old girl, who was gunned down in Houston on December 30. According to Barnes’s mother and 15-year-old sister, the white driver of a pickup truck had pulled up next to the family’s car before opening fire. The accusation set off a frenzy of hate-crime allegations and blanket coverage by the New York Times. King offered a $100,000 reward to anyone who located the suspect.

The Fight for $15 isn’t living up to its promise. For years, liberals have claimed that the minimum wage needs to increase to $15 an hour to provide a living wage for full-time workers. The stated goal, as socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders writes on his website, is straightforward, “We must ensure that no full-time worker lives in poverty.” In one way, the campaign has been remarkably successful. California and New York are phasing in a statewide $15 an hour minimum wage. Numerous cities, including Seattle, Minneapolis and Washington D.C., have passed $15 an hour minimum wage

Although snow stations have recorded some decline, it hasn’t been statistically significant.
