Billy F. Gibbons: “ZZ Top Has Been 50
Years of Making It Up As We Go Along”

Texas Monthly, by Andy Langer

Original Article

ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons brought in 2019 onstage, playing guitar with his normal New Year’s Eve running buddies: Willie Nelson & Family. Gibbons has been a not-so-surprise special guest at a half-dozen of Nelson’s annual new year’s performances at Austin’s ACL Live. And while this year Gibbons unfurled a long solo on Nelson’s version of “Texas Flood,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says he’s generally just happy to have the best seat in the house to watch Willie play guitar. “I think he’s underrated as a soloist,” Gibbons

ZZ Top has been experimenting with their music ever since Tres Hombres. Listen to Snappy Kakky and Sheik from that album. The fact that they are a power trio is what helped keep them intact. Groups with four or more members are bound to lose a member or two over the years. Originally ZZ Top was supposed to be a four member group, with a keyboardist, but they settled on three members and did keyboards on their studio work.

Grew up around Billy in Houston playing music since the 60s . My memories of him driving his 66 Dodge Dart around Pasadena and Spring Branch are still fresh. His love for offshore fishing and good TEXMEX food. It all makes the entire package of the King of Cool that is Billy F Gibbons. A Texas Native treasure as well as a World treasure. I say How How How have Mercy.

In the sixties I did gigs with my band making money through college, UL Lafayette, La. (my income) until I was drafted in the Army in 1968. We played gigs in a club (dive) called the Swinging Machine. When I returned home in late 1969 the club had changed it´s name to Willie Purples. On one occasion there were posters of a band ZZ Top that would be playing there. I thought to myself who names themselves that and does it mean something?
The night I went to Willie Purples the ´little ole band from Texas´ looked like kids and very much pre-hobo beards and very youthful looking. A $1.50 got me in the door and I believe all the songs were going to become the album Rio Grande Mud.
Many years later I got to see them three more times evolving into what you see today. Watching Billy Gibbons started me playing my Gibson Les Paul again influenced by ´the Reverend´ and ZZ Top.
I´ve seen Willie Nelson many times but I have to say I tired of him and he´s more of a song writer than a singing talent but he is a Texas legend.

I love Billy Gibbon´s playing. I´ve been playing guitar since 1977 and ZZ Top always plays right in the pocket. I played the solo from La Grange to my bandmates and floored them-I told them I wish I had written it, not learned it. I Need You Tonite....Cheap Sunglasses...Rough Boy....it´s all good!

I remember their songs hitting the airwaves in the 70´s. A new ´metal cowboy´ kind of music that was a breath of fresh air from the tightly controlled bands of the day. It´s amazing they´ve remained relevant for 50 years.

The Temptation of the Devils River
Texas Monthly Magazine, by Dan Oko    Original Article

It has long been a mystery how, exactly, the Devils River got its name—and what, exactly, happened to the apostrophe. But the leading theory will ring true to anyone who has attempted to navigate it. Though early Spanish explorers named the river after Saint Peter, it’s said that the settlers who followed in their footsteps regarded the waterway and its surrounding terrain as so forbidding that they thought it could have been carved by Lucifer himself. And so the gatekeeper to heaven gave way to the ruler of hell. Given that grim reputation, that off-putting name, and the river’s remote

There are just nine steps from freedom

Talk of socialism is suddenly everywhere. The journey from a free society to socialism, however, does not occur overnight. It’s a stepped process that begins slowly and ends with a rush. Here are those steps: Step 1. Massive Government Spending. Socialist states have government at the center of their economies and feature enormous spending programs. In early 1990s Sweden often cited as a socialist state, government spending exceeded 70 percent of its economy. Under President Jefferson, government spending was approximately 2 to 3 percent of the economy. Today, we are at 36 percent. Sweden, now walking away from socialism,

Do Democrats Hear Echoes of 1972 Today?

The scenario sounds familiar: Democrats, facing a Republican presidential candidate widely reviled among the party’s rank-and-file, nominate a seemingly safe establishment figure to keep their hold on the White House. To the party’s shock and horror, their establishment figure loses the general election. The reviled Republican becomes president. The party’s liberal activists seethe at the loss, arguing that their party’s establishment centrists stole the nomination at their convention and then failed to produce. In reaction, they push the party to the left and, four years later, propel a decidedly liberal candidate to the nomination.

The Democratic Crackup

Americans love a good political brawl, and that’s terrible news for Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Her Democratic Party has commenced a full throw-down—with itself. Few things have benefited Democrats more in the past few years than the Donald Trump show. The president likes to be the center of attention, and the media likes nothing more than to oblige him. This dynamic helped make the 2018 election a referendum on the man himself rather than his policies, and that made Mrs. Pelosi speaker of the House. Democrats envisioned the same dynamic helping them win the White House in 2020.

As the Islamic State’s physical caliphate shrinks to nothing after an almost five-year campaign led by U.S. special operations forces, military insiders say one small unit has killed more of the extremists than any other: the company of Gray Eagle drones in the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Although the military has thrown a cloak of secrecy over its operations, the unit — officially called E (or “Echo”) Company of the regiment’s Second Battalion and established less than a decade ago — is increasingly being lauded in special operations and Army aviation circles. “They are doing the most killing of anyone

FORT MYERS, Fla.—It’s no secret that baseball’s grip on the collective imagination of the country has slipped. Football is the national sport now. Basketball is king with the social-media generation. Though America’s pastime isn’t dying, the long-term trend lines are worrisome. But against all odds, there is a player in the Upper Midwest who is capable of healing what ails the game. His name is Willians Astudillo, and he is here to save baseball. Astudillo is a 27-year-old rookie who toiled in the minors for a decade. He might not make the Minnesota Twins’ 25-man roster

A buzzy snack is popping up in supermarkets across the country alongside kale chips and quinoa puffs: pork rinds. Even longtime fans might not recognize their new place in the foodie food chain. New brands are seeking to transcend the rind’s reputation as a greasy gas-station staple by using premium ingredients like humanely raised pork and Himalayan pink salt. If that’s not enough to provoke a serious case of cognitive dissonance, there are even vegan alternatives.

The U.S. has set a new record for the number of migrant families caught crossing its southern border over an entire year. It took just five months. From the start of the federal fiscal year in October through February, the Border Patrol arrested 136,150 people traveling as families for crossing the border illegally, according to data released Tuesday. The prior record for a 12-month period was 107,212, during the fiscal year that ended last September. The rapid acceleration is the latest illustration of how many parents and children are seeking asylum

The trend comes as Americans have shown greater support in recent years for a more democratic presidential election process, without the translational risks of the electoral college. A source close to Abrams confirmed the meeting and said that it occurred at Biden´s request, according to the Associated Press. The meeting is significant because Biden represents the moderate, establishment wing of the Democratic Party and is widely expected to be an instant frontrunner if he decides to seek the presidential nomination in 2020. Six deaths, all involving men with connections to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, drew attention on social media and speculation in the activist community that something sinister was at play. Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officer´s fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.
