Syria and Our Foreign Policy Muddle
Frontpage Mag, by Bruce Thornton

Donald Trump’s decision to pull ground troops out of Syria, followed hard by Defense Secretary Mattis’ resignation effective January 1, has sparked the usual complaints about the unpredictable, shoot-from-the-hip president. And as usual, the most important issue underlying the debate over his decision is ignored––our failure to settle on a coherent, long-term foreign policy strategy. Apart from the by now reflexive NeverTrump harrumphing, more sober commentators have made serious arguments both for staying and for leaving. The most compelling of the former are the risks of ceding more regional influence to Russia and Iran. Both of these rivals are

A well written piece that defines accurately the mess known as the Middle East. One pipe dream touted is the illusion of a long term strategy because these people are too unpredictable and are guided by emotion and a religion that forces their submission to barbarism, hatred of all other religions and mysoginy. Who could predict that Iraq would have spawned ISIS or that the most powerful military in the world would subject itself to ROE that tied both legs and one arm for minimum efficiency in combat? We learned the basics of fighting islamists in Iraq and ignored them elsewhere.

Our policy should have always been to let them fight it out amongst themselves. We might be capable of creating a little peace here and there but it will be temporary, won´t change anything and is certainly not worth the price of American lives. We are insulated from all of it by oceans and the europeans are more concerned with CO2 than with national defense. They despise us but demand financial aid and protection. Russia may be friendly with Iran now but the prospect of them allowing the mullahs to have independently controlled long-range nukes in Russia´s back yard is preposterous.

Hardly a day goes by without the tempo of political hostility rising -- sometimes to the level of physical confrontation. Recently "a man being sought for the assault of a conservative activist on the University of California, Berkeley campus last month has been arrested." There is less and less regret for incivility. Nobody says sorry any more, they just retreat into a private reality where they are always right. The Washington Post, still reeling from misidentifying victim and aggressor in a story about Covington Catholic Boys high students and activist Nathan Phillips, simply slapped itself on wrist with

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The World Bridge Federation says the world’s No. 1 bridge player has been suspended after failing a drug test. The federation said on its website Friday that Geir Helgemo, who is Norwegian but represents Monaco in bridge events, tested positive for synthetic testosterone and female fertility drug clomifene at a World Bridge Series event in Orlando, Florida last September. After accepting he had breached anti-doping rules, Helgemo was suspended by the WBF until Nov. 20. He also had all titles, medals and points from the 2018 World Bridge Series revoked. Hold the presses! More Germans trust Vladimir Putin’s Russia than Trump’s United States. This is earth-shattering news, a scoop like no other. If this were 1969 the moon landing would be a smaller headline. And guess who came up with the scoop: none other than The New York Times, the paper that first told us that there was no famine in the Soviet Union back in the 1930s. (Five million Ukrainians died, but the writer of the Times, Walter Duranty, got a Pulitzer.) Europe used to be a very pleasant old place to visit and to live in. I know.

Even some of President Trump´s habitually vociferous critics are right now inclined to agree that he did the right thing in walking away from the Hanoi summit with North Korean tyrant Kim Jong Un. In doing so, Trump defied not only Kim´s duplicitous demands, but also the dire predictions from assorted American pundits and former policy makers that Trump would sell out his own country at this second meeting, whether by contenting himself with a nuclear-armed North Korea, endorsing a phony peace deal or generally giving away the store in self-interested pursuit of a Nobel Peace Price. It’s a few weeks after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court, and Jane Mayer, one of the most prominent investigative reporters in the country, has just finished a stunning professional run. She and her New Yorker colleague Ronan Farrow broke the Christine Blasey Ford accusations, then followed that with the account of Deborah Ramirez, who said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at Yale. These pieces helped trigger the political spectacle—a “partisan inferno,” as Farrow puts it—that led to Ford and Kavanaugh’s televised testimony, which captivated the country. Behind the stark melodrama of our political conflicts lies the progressive consensus: The collective use of power to pursue various policy aims depends on technical knowledge and science. But this view itself depends on certain contestable modern ideas about human nature and behavior that are matters not of science, but of ideas found in philosophical speculation. Policy–the aims collectively we should pursue and how–reflects ideas, not technical knowledge. And all ideas, good or bad, assume some vision of what humans are and what they should do as members of a political community. The philosophical roots of different

Civilizations can collapse from information corruption, sometimes described as the loss of its "core values" or a decline in institutional competence. Just as a human being has mental health and a skillset a civilization may be thought of as possessing equivalent properties. If either "loses it" there may be dire consequences. Have we lost it? A BBC article examines the chances our civilization is headed for collapse. One of the dangers it identifies comes from within culture itself. Decriminalizing prostitution — an idea gaining momentum among some Democrats, including at least one 2020 presidential contender — may one day be traced back to the hookers plying their trade under the elevated train along New York City’s Roosevelt Avenue. That open-air market of prostitutes and johns in Queens, undeterred by constant threat of arrest and incarceration, has been cited by New York state lawmakers mulling whether it’s time to wave the white flag in the war on the world’s oldest profession. The decriminalization debate among Democrats spilled into the 2020 presidential race last month when Sen. Kamala D. Harris

After the latest spasm of gang violence, Minneapolis’ Somali residents and business owners on Monday stepped up their calls for help from City Hall and police headquarters to help curb the senseless shootings that they say too often go overlooked. On Friday alone, five men of Somali descent were shot in separate attacks, one fatally. Police and community members pinned the blame for the bloodshed on an ongoing feud between Cedar-Riverside neighborhood gangs like 1627 and Madhiban With Attitude (MWA) and their rivals, the Somali Outlaws, whose territory includes the area around Karmel Mall.
