Mudslides offer a preview of what could
be a wet winter in Southern California

As heavy rain pelted Hollywood Burbank Airport on Thursday morning, the pilot of Southwest Flight 278 out of Oakland came over the intercom with a warning: The runway was short and wet. It was going to be a bumpy landing. Paris Organist, a 31-year-old Oakland resident sitting in the front row, put up his foot to brace himself as the plane rolled off the end of the runway just after 9 a.m., its landing gear plowing into a concrete barrier designed to stop airplanes that overshot their mark. Mud splattered on the plane’s windows. “We looked it up on Google Maps, and it showed we were almost to the road.… We noticed the plane

I´m confused, is it warming or cooling that causes mudslides? I need to direct my donations to the proper group.

I´m not making light of these catastrophes, but it seems California will slide into the Pacific in mudslides and not break off by means of earthquakes.

How many named reporters? A cast of thousands to report what always happens after wildfires. Those in the wildfire areas know they are vulnerable.

There are always some mudslides. As predictors of whether it will be a wet winter, they are good for zilch.

The article seems to focus on the plane’s skidding on the short runway at Burbank Airport. You would think it was the first time such a thing had happened.

Californians learn to ignore the media. Especially the MSM, wherever they report.

Left out of all reports? The San Gabriel Valley was caused by a river that has long since dried up and left lovely soil (great for planting) the has a tendency to move when on unfettered (by plant roots) slopes and hit by large quantities of rain in a short, very concentrated period..

Back in the late 60s it rained in the greater SoCal area for 40+ days. There were jokes about building an Ark.

In the Santa Barbara area a lone they had over 40 inches of rain. The town of Lomita, near Torrance, was flooded with some areas of the city under five feet of water.

If SoCal gets that much rain this go a round, Malibu will be but a memory (I hope) as will be most of the areas ripped out by wild fires over the last two seasons.

OK. For those who think a small local mudslide threatens the entire state, or that an earthquake will take us out, climb in bed, a tornado is coming to take you to OZ. Say Hi to the Wizard for me.
I understand that there are backward parts of the US where something like this would be a catastrophe, but CA is not one of those places.

I´m guessing that the early settlers, the whalers and the Gold Rush emmigrants to California had the brains to avoid building homes on soft hillsides so this is a relatively new phenomenon.

Mudslides in the Los Angeles area generally happen in steep hilly terrain that has had recent brush fires. The chaparral vegetation is largely fire species such as greasewood. When it burns, the high wax content of the leaves and wood doesn´t all burn; a lot of it melts and coats the soil particles. The soil is rendered water-repellent.
Then, usually within a few years, they get a wet winter. When that happens, the rainwater doesn´t soak into the soil in burnt-off areas; instead it runs off, carrying a load of the water-repellent soil and a lot of rocks with it. The result is mudslides, sometimes catastrophic ones. It´s nothing new. That´s why the foot of the San Gabriel mountain range has a "flood control" (actually a mud control) dam every few miles.

President Donald Trump, future House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer erupted in an on-camera fight in the Oval Office over border wall funding on Tuesday. The president argued that funding the wall was a “national emergency” and proposed $5 billion in funding. Schumer refused, insisting that he would only provide just $1.6 billion in border security funds. In response, Trump said he would shut down the government and take responsibility for it if they failed to include additional wall funding. The United States is the top pick — by far — for migrants seeking a new home, despite reports that President Trump’s policies are scaring people away and making countries such as Canada and some in Europe the preferred choice, according to a new report. Some 158 million, or a population far larger than all of Russia, want to move to the U.S., about 21 percent of all those in the world seeking a new home. In a worldwide survey, Gallup found that 15 percent of the world, or 758 million, want to move, most for jobs. The list: (Copy

The Daily Wire´s own Andrew Klavan broke it all down on Monday´s episode of "The Andrew Klavan Show." Rocky financial markets, driven largely by Federal Reserve uncertainty and President Trump’s aggressive tariff negotiation strategy, shouldn’t overshadow two trade victories at the recent G20 Summit. Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping negotiated a trade war truce. Trump agreed to delay raising tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports to 25 percent in return for Chinese promises to purchase more American agricultural, energy, and industrial exports and reduce the trade deficit. This ceasefire is double victory for Americans. The most obvious winners are the farmers who have seen their export markets dry up as a result of China’s

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is upset that people don’t appreciate her intelligence and depth. It turns out that people notice when she says stupid things, such as nattering on about the “three chambers of government” or not understanding that Pentagon accounting errors don’t yield a pot of money available for her pet scheme of “Medicare for all.” Preparing to become a solon in the House of Representatives is not at all like being a hot chick working her previous occupation of bartending, where pretty much anything she said was eagerly appreciated by her male customers.
