Merkel´s party chooses successor

HAMBURG, Germany — Chancellor Angela Merkel´s party celebrated her 18 years as its leader with a lengthy standing ovation on Friday as it prepared to elect a successor who could help shape Germany´s political direction for the next generation. A close ally of Merkel´s and a one-time rival were considered favorites for the leadership of the center-right Christian Democratic Union. (Snip) The favorites are CDU general secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a Merkel ally who is widely considered the chancellor´s preferred successor and is closest to her centrist stance; and Friedrich Merz, a former leader of the party´s

A bit of Wikipedia research, although, I don´t entirely trust the source, it is quick.

One of the rumored replacements, Kramp-Karrenbauer has said:
"if we open up [the definition of marriage] to become a long-term responsible partnership between two adults, then other demands can´t be ruled out, such as a marriage between close relatives or between more than two people, or even marriage between humans and animals."
How amazingly rational. Of course, she wants to raise the top tax rate back to 53 percent, compared to Merkel, who had lowered it to a mere 42 percent.

The other rumored replacement, Merz, has said, "I stand for a cosmopolitan Germany whose roots lie in Christian ethics and the European Enlightenment and whose most important political allies are the democracies of the West. I gladly use this expression again: The democracies of the West." He is in favor of a European Army and close ties to France.

Germans are going to have to figure out a way to start removing the Muslims destroying their country or they are gone in 50 years, and I wonder if any of their leaders can even see it, or if they even care?

I heard some of the coverage of 41´s funeral. It was before they got to the cathedral (was trapped in the auto shop waiting room).

I did not know this, but they mentioned that, when Bush 41 was Presidennt, Merkel was working for the East German government.

What´s wrong with Germany. They got rid of that oppressive regime, then elected a member of it? Strange.

I don´t really know much about German politics, but Merkel may actually be a centrist in their spectrum which runs pretty much from hard core Communists to the ´extreme right´ which would probably be about like a 1985 Democrat here.

No actual "conservatives" in their country, near as I can tell. Just different shades of leftists. So, the center of that....may be Merkel.

CHICAGO – The outgoing mayor of Chicago wants to legalize recreational marijuana and open a casino to help address a growing pension crisis in the nation’s third largest city, a source close to the mayor said Tuesday. Rahm Emanuel, who is set to leave office in May, will propose both measures in a major address on Wednesday, according to the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly before the mayor’s address. Also Tuesday, aides to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told The New York Post that Cuomo was readying a plan to legalize recreational marijuana in that state. It´s

Flake, who is retiring in January, is voting "no" on all judicial picks until he gets a vote on legislation protecting special counsel Robert Mueller from being fired without cause. WASHINGTON — The 2020 Democratic presidential primary, already expected to be the party’s most wide open in decades, has been jostled on the eve of many long-plotted campaign announcements by a political threat that few contenders bothered considering until recently: Will a soon-to-be-former congressman, with an unremarkable legislative record and a Senate campaign loss, upend their best-laid plans? Representative Beto O’Rourke of Texas has emerged as the wild card of the presidential campaign-in-waiting for a Democratic Party that lacks a clear 2020 front-runner. MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — Progressive Democrats are beginning to confront an unintended consequence of their own success: Dilution of the brand. So many Democratic presidential prospects are now claiming the progressive mantle in advance of the 2020 primaries that liberal leaders are trying to institute a measure of ideological quality control, designed to ensure the party ends up with a nominee who meets their exacting standards. Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are discussing policy platforms that could serve as a litmus test for presidential contenders.
