The Man Who Got Along
National Review, by Conrad Black

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 12/5/2018 1:29:55 PM

George H. W. Bush did, as many have stated, exemplify the highest civic and human virtues. A political or historical evaluation of him will be more complicated and, necessarily, somewhat less laudatory. No one should be discredited because of good fortune. The late president’s father, Senator Prescott Bush of Connecticut, had married the daughter of a close associate of a longtime prominent Democrat, railway heir, governor of New York, and ambassador to the Soviet Union and United Kingdom, Averell Harriman, and of Secretary of Defense Robert Lovett.(Snip)There were practically no Republicans in Texas at this time,

Comments:
The second headline:

"George H. W. Bush was a decent, honorable, and admirable man but not a distinguished political leader."

A history of sorts. Well worth reading. Black always is.

FTA: With all that said, not every president is a Lincoln or Washington or Roosevelt (of either party). And the president the nation now mourns was a fine and admirable man and leader, a brave patriot, and a great gentleman. Service was his honor and his vocation, in peace and war (and he is the last president who served in combat). He deserves every word and gesture of admiration he receives this week.

I concur with this. Just his WW2 service deserves our gratitude.

Today, President H.W. Bush was eulogized as a man who didn´t hate anyone. Wouldn´t it be nice if others could be like him.

His military service and combat duty comes with my deepest thanks.

I was amazed to hear Chris Wallace say (twice!) that he had believed George H. W. Bush was the "finest living American". Good for Chris Wallace, for breaking the idea that no GOP president can be good.

H.W. Bush was a apt politician and bureaucrat but I would question whether he was a good leader. That is why he didn´t get a second term.

You hear the media applauding Bush now because he was a Republican that didn´t stick to principles and let the Left get their way. "Getting along" with people who support bad ideas is not a virtue.

I respect the man, believe he was a good person and had good intentions, and I honor his service to his Country in numerous roles.

Someone said many aspire to be president because they want to do something.

Others wish to be president because it is just something to do.

Reagan, of course, was the former. Bush, of course, was the latter.

Bush 41 thought it would be nice to be the president. He had no big agenda or major projects.

The Bushs’ referred to themselves while holding public office as being “compassionate conservatives” which translated into them being socially very liberal Republicans. In keeping with that the Bush dynasty manytimes went along with the liberal Democrats as that political machine really had no ideological political agenda but “to serve”.

Being gentlemanly and believing that they were above street level “politics” the Bushs’ rarely fought back effectively as the politically mean and street smart liberal Democrats insinuated that the Bushs’ were idiots, born with silver spoons in their mouths, while kicking and stomping the Bushs’ and their policies into the gutter at every turn. The result being Bush 41 making way for the Clintons, and Bush 43 making way for Obama.

As House control is about to switch, it serves as a reminder about Democrats: They like government. And governing. While tea party Republicans swept to power to stop things -- repeal Obamacare, roll back environmental regulations and decrease the size and scope of government -- Democrats are marching into the majority to build things back up. And after spending eight downcast years in the minority, they can´t wait to get started. Just ask Rep. Peter DeFazio. He´s waited 32 years for his chance to become chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and has a highway and transit rebuilding

SAN DIEGO - Kneeling in front of riot police, 32 religious leaders and activists were arrested at the U.S. border fence in San Diego on Monday during a protest to support the Central American migrant caravan. More than 400 demonstrators, many leaders of churches, mosques, synagogues and indigenous communities, sought a halt to detention and deportation of migrants and for the United States to welcome the caravan that arrived in Tijuana, Mexico in November. President Trump has courageously thrown his weight behind a reform bill that will dramatically improve how we rehabilitate criminals and help keep them out of overcrowded prisons. Joining him are a majority in the Senate as well as numerous groups representing law enforcers and prosecutors, including former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik. The problem: A small group of GOP senators are trying to defeat the bill, known as the First Step Act, with the basest of tactics. Instead of permitting a principled debate on the Senate floor, they’re treating the American people to misdirection,

President Donald Trump on Tuesday will meet with Democratic leaders to hash out a plan to avert a partial government shutdown later this month despite sharp disagreements over his border wall. Trump will sit down with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer at the White House on Tuesday ahead of a Dec. 21 deadline to shut down a range of government agencies. Delta Air Lines Inc. is barring emotional-support and service animals that are less than four months old, while banning all support animals from flights longer than eight hours. The changes will take effect for tickets issued on or after Dec. 18, the carrier said Monday. Passengers who bought tickets before then and who already requested to travel with an emotional support animal will be allowed a grace period to fly as originally planned until a full ban starts Feb. 1. The changes don’t affect pets that customers pay to take into the cabin in enclosed carriers.

CNN was so giddy a month ago that Jeff Zucker felt 5 foot-7 inches tall. Could be the Cuban heels he was wearing. The channel´s headline read, "Macron rebukes nationalism as Trump observes Armistice Day." Fortune magazine was more explicit, "Macron´s Armistice Speech Sends Message to Trump: ´Nationalism Is a Betrayal of Patriotism.´" How silly. Nationalism and patriotism are synonymous. And how stupid because feuding with Donald John Trump, president of the United States of America, is an invitation to disaster -- which has befallen Macron.

The Supreme Court declined to review three cases relating to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood at the state level Monday, over a vigorous dissent from Justice Clarence Thomas. The dissent was significant because it indicates that Justice Brett Kavanaugh sided with the high court’s liberal wing to deny review of a lower court decision that favored the nation’s largest abortion provider. “So what explains the Court’s refusal to do its job here?,” Thomas wrote. “I suspect it has something to do with the fact that some respondents in these cases are named ‘Planned Parenthood.
