Mexican crime data may
undercut migrant caravan
asylum claims: ´You don´t pick and choose´

Fox News, by Maxim Lott

Thousands of Hondurans have made the treacherous trip through Mexico to the southern U.S. border, saying they are fleeing gang violence, but some immigration experts say Mexican crime data may undermine their case for asylum -- with the caravan passing through several states with lower murder rates than some U.S. cities. Mexico as a whole has a murder rate of 19.3 per 100,000 people, according to U.N. figures, and some parts of the country are extremely dangerous. The central Mexican state of Colima has a stunning murder rate of 98.4 per 100,000.

Comments:
Someone checked.

Migrants going to St. Louis face a higher crime rate than Honduras itself.

TIJUANA, Mexico—After fleeing tear gas shot at the U.S. border, Carlos González confessed confusion and second thoughts about the caravan that carried him to doorstep of his dream: life in the United States. The 40-year-old corn farmer from Honduras, wearing a pink breast cancer awareness hat and an orange work vest, had hopped on the caravan of Central American migrants figuring it would facilitate his entry into the country. It set out from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Oct. 12 and for five weeks he could hope and dream—especially as the

The outgoing Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto has stunned the country by bestowing the nation’s highest honour for foreigners on Jared Kushner, the senior White House adviser and son-in-law of Donald Trump. Peña Nieto praised Kushner as “a grand ally of Mexico” who helped achieve a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico. The revised agreement – now known as Usmca – is expected to be signed in Buenos Aires during the G20 summit. Peña Nieto will decorate Kushner with the Order of the Aztec Eagle in the Argentinian capital this week.

Every morning, students in the sprawling San Juan School District in Utah place their right hands over their hearts and recite a pledge. Despite two centuries of reasons not to honor the American flag, none of the students — nearly all Native American — have ever opted out. And they all recite the words in Navajo: “To the Sacredness of Our Flag. From the land of the 50 United States of America. We pledge our allegiance to God and our flag. It stands for hope and compassion. We stand united as People of all cultures on our beloved land.

Utterly defeated by the resolve of President Trump, caravan migrants from Central America are packing up and going home. The San Diego Union-Tribune described the mood of the several thousand of them at their Tijuana base camp as subdued and morose. The big Che Guevara-style border charge at the U.S. barricades Sunday didn´t work out quite as the group´s leftist organizers said it would. It didn´t even work out like the one they managed to get done at Mexico´s southern border a few weeks earlier. The glory of challenging gringo for the goodies never came.

The Democrats have regained the House, which will serve as a check on Trump’s influence, but the Republicans gained seats in the Senate and won crucial governorships. What does it all mean for Trump’s prospects in 2020, or for the chances of his eventual challenger? Betting trends show that Europeans believe Trump will win reelection. How do betting patterns factor in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, particularly from bettors in Europe? Quite a bit, it turns out. While most polls and pundits had Hillary Clinton winning the 2016 election, betting trends in Europe had

You often see it at the bottom of news stories or in less prominently placed news stories, from the more serious local news outlets near the scene of the Tijuana caravan encampment: Migrants are taking a look at the lay of the land and deciding to pack up and go home. So much to love in Senate

It’s been reported that the new, larger Republican Senate majority is going to exercise its power and downsize the Senate Judiciary Committee. It’s a brilliant plan for two different reasons. The first reason is that fewer Democrat senators will have the opportunity to showboat and eat up precious time with the sort of antics they displayed in the confirmation hearings for Justice Kavanaugh. Confirmation of more federal judges at the district court and appeals court levels is the most important priority for Senate Republicans, and this proposal would streamline and therefore speed that process. But the second reason is delicious,

It happened. Migrants stormed the border in Tijuana and the United States tear-gassed them before shutting the entire port of entry down. After that, the authorities in Tijuana arrested almost 500 of them, and announced at least 39 of them who threw rocks would be immediately deported. According to Al Jazeera (which has the most detailed report of the Mexican reaction in English): Mexico pledged on Sunday to increase security near its border crossings and said it will deport some of the 500 asylum seekers who attempted to breach the United States border.

They now number more than 6,000 in a space the city government first prepared for a third as many. (Snip) 350 people have asked authorities to help them travel home.
