Fear of a Black Continent
New York Times, by Ross Douthat

Original Article

Posted By:Pluperfect, 10/22/2018 4:36:39 AM

Emmanuel Macron, the youthful and ambitious president of the French, likes to talk about African birthrates. In the summer of 2017, he answered a question about why there couldn’t be a Marshall Plan for Africa by calling the continent’s problems “civilizational,” and lamenting that African countries “have seven or eight children per woman.” This was attacked by some as racist, defended by others as hardheaded realism about development economics. Macron obviously felt comfortable with what he’d said, because he returned to the idea last month at a Gates Foundation conference.

The Immorality of the Open Borders Party
American Spectator, by George Neumayr    Original Article

" A wall is an immorality between countries,” Nancy Pelosi said the other day. The New York Times recently ran a piece entitled “There is Nothing Wrong with Open Borders.” Democrats across the country routinely call for the abolition of ICE and the spread of sanctuary cities. Here and there Democrats may dissent from the platform of open borders, but it is clear that the ideological core of the party favors it. Top officials at the DNC, such as Keith Ellison, walk around in T-shirts emblazoned with calls for open borders. Out of this absolutism has come Pelosi’s recalcitrance

Britain´s elite are no longer hiding

I owe my voters an apology. During the 2016 Brexit referendum, several "leave" supporters resignedly told me that, if our side won, the "remain" side would ignore us. At the time, I dismissed it as conspiracy-minded nonsense. There’s no way that a referendum can be disregarded, I told people. I get why you’re angry: You’ve been patronized and taken for granted and slighted. But this time, I’d say, it’s different. This time it’s a full-scale national referendum. This time “they” won’t be able to look the other way. Oh, dear. It now looks as if the kooks and the cranks

A combination of Democratic obstructionism and Jeff Flake flakiness has conspired to create a backlog of federal judicial nominees awaiting a vote in the Senate. Flake, it will be recalled, decided to bottle up all judicial nominees in committee towards the end of 2018 because Majority Leader McConnell wouldn’t allow a vote on legislation to “protect” Robert Mueller. Mueller needs no protection. He’s not going to be fired, as the recent hearings on William Barr’s nomination confirmed. In any event, the Senate lacks the power to protect him from discharge. The legislation Flake insisted upon

When a BuzzFeed reporter first sought comment on the news outlet’s explosive report that President Trump had directed his lawyer to lie to Congress, the spokesman for special counsel Robert S. Mueller III treated the request as he would almost any other story. The reporter informed Mueller’s spokesman, Peter Carr, that he and a colleague had “a story coming stating that Michael Cohen was directed by President Trump himself to lie to Congress about his negotiations related to the Trump Moscow project,” according to copies of their emails provided by a BuzzFeed spokesman. Importantly, the reporter made no reference

President Trump’s immigration compromise package to end the partial government shutdown drew sharp reactions from Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike. In a televised White House address on Saturday afternoon, Trump offered Democrats a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has been seeking for a barrier along the nation´s southern border with Mexico. “Our immigration system should be a source of pride ... not a source of shame as it is all over the world,” Trump said in his plea. The president’s proposal was met with disdain

Will Elites Ever Respect Voters´

It was no coincidence that Donald Trump scheduled a trip to Britain to promote one of his golf courses in Scotland, on June 23, 2016. That was the day of the Brexit referendum in which 52 percent of the electorate --17.4 million voters, more than any party has ever won in a general election -- voted for the UK to leave the European Union. Candidate Trump´s earlier endorsement of Brexit was criticized by elevated opinion as an unfriendly interference in another nation´s internal affairs, although few, if any, had similarly criticized then-President Barack Obama for having urged Britons to vote "remain"

Another leak about President Trump, supposedly from federal prosecutors, and another media freakout. This one was different from the earlier ones in its seriousness. Two reporters from BuzzFeed, citing two anonymous law enforcement officials, reported that Trump had instructed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, or at least that this accusation had been passed on to special counsel Robert Mueller. In a late Friday night news dump 24 hours after this "scoop," Mueller released a statement that the whole thing was a big hoax — "not accurate." We had drafted an editorial warning

Bloomberg Businessweek spent more than a year reporting on an alleged breach of U.S. computer infrastructure by China -- a hardware hack supposedly affecting Apple, Amazon, Supermicro and nearly 30 other companies. That story was published on Oct. 4 under the headline “The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies.” More than three months later, reporting on the story continues. An email obtained by the Erik Wemple Blog shows that Jordan Robertson, who wrote the story with Michael Riley, recently contacted a former Apple employee with a request: I’m a reporter with Bloomberg Businessweek in Washington.

Last month, the downtown San Diego franchise of the Burgerim restaurant chain closed its doors, contending that chaotic conditions caused by large numbers of homeless people in and around nearby Horton Plaza Park had driven customers away and made it impossible to operate. The shuttering of the Burgerim location was a warning signal to the San Diego business community — and to city hall, too. Burgerim would not be leaving quietly. The franchisee, backed by parent company Burgerim USA, intended to sue in state court, claiming that neither its landlord nor the city of San Diego

Something possessed him to share images from a recent dental cleaning, perhaps the grossest introduction of a potential presidential candidate in the nation´s history. He gave an interview to the Washington Post where the only specific plank in his immigration platform was opposition to President Trump´s border wall. In the same interview, he mused that the Constitution may no longer apply to the United States, since we´re an "empire"

The federal government shutdown has presented a unique opportunity for President Donald Trump to clear out the deadwood in the federal bureaucracy, saving U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars in salaries, perks, and rented office space for people who aren´t doing anything productive. At the same time, Trump can get rid of dozens, possibly even hundreds of Deep State operatives in the government, handpicked by Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for their loyalty to the Democratic Party, not their country or the law. A near majority of Republicans do not have a favorable view of freshman Senator Willard “Mitt” Romney (R-UT), according to a PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll released on Thursday. The poll, conducted January 10-13, found 48% of “Republicans and conservative-leaning” have an “unfavorable” view Romney. Just 29% view Romney favorably while another 23% are “unsure” or “never heard” of him. Never Trumpers like Bill Kristol have said Romney is now the “leader of the Republican Resistance to” President Donald Trump, and the PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll again shows how unpopular of a label that is among Republicans.
