Fear of a Black Continent
New York Times, by Ross Douthat

Original Article

Posted By:Pluperfect, 10/22/2018 4:36:39 AM

Emmanuel Macron, the youthful and ambitious president of the French, likes to talk about African birthrates. In the summer of 2017, he answered a question about why there couldn’t be a Marshall Plan for Africa by calling the continent’s problems “civilizational,” and lamenting that African countries “have seven or eight children per woman.” This was attacked by some as racist, defended by others as hardheaded realism about development economics. Macron obviously felt comfortable with what he’d said, because he returned to the idea last month at a Gates Foundation conference.

Obvious Double Standard On Recusals
Proves Russia Probe Is About Getting Trump

The installation of Matthew Whitaker as the acting attorney general has the recusal pundits barking like shelter dogs in the presence of a trespassing squirrel. In case you’re wondering how the recusal rules work, it’s simply a matter of whether it helps or hurts Trump. Don’t believe me? See if you can detect a pattern. Since Whitaker might rein in the special counsel, he must be recused, they argue. Similarly, when it appeared former attorney general Jeff Sessions might help Trump, he acceded to demands he recuse himself. But Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

Obama Judges Can’t Save Dem Losers

Obama-appointed federal judges have brazenly rewritten election statutes to favor Democrats challenging the outcomes of races in Florida and Georgia. In both states, however, the apparent losers haven’t benefited from arbitrary changes these partisan jurists made in the laws by which election officials are legally bound. Thursday, for example, an Obama appointee changed the rules governing how mail-in ballots with signature mismatches must be handled in Florida — just hours before the legally-mandated recount deadline. In Georgia, two Obama appointees changed the rules regarding how to count incomplete absentee ballots, provisional ballots,

Why the Brexit chaos has only just begun

British politics and markets are in chaos because Prime Minister Theresa May can’t sell her long-awaited Brexit plan — and no one knows what comes next. After British voters narrowly approved a withdrawal from the European Union in 2016, we felt the United Kingdom would be better off — able to make its own decisions on trade and immigration and free from lunatic EU regulations. But little of that is in the deal May unveiled Wednesday night. It leaves the UK within the EU’s economic orbit, subject to many of the bloc’s existing regulations and tariffs,

As search crews found another body Wednesday in a house burned by a massive Southern California wildfire, officials fear many more deaths in the destructive blazes at both ends of the state that have now claimed 66 lives. The deadliest and most destructive of the two wildfires is the Camp Fire in Northern California´s Butte County, which has killed at least 63 people. Seven more bodies were found Thursday, officials said. There were more than 631 people missing in the Butte County fire zones on Thursday night, though officials were working to track them down. $2.7T Pentagon completes its first-ever

About 1,200 auditors sharpened their pencils and pored over the Pentagon´s accounting books and were able to identify discrepancies that will likely take years to resolve, Reuters reported. The undertaking was massive and an early goal for the Trump administration. These auditors looked into spending on military personnel and weapons systems, the report said. Patrick Shanahan, the deputy secretary of defense, said "the fact that we did the audit is substantial," and said the agency "never expected to pass." A Pentagon spokesman clarified that an audit is not a ‘pass-fail’ process

The grim search for victims of California’s deadliest fire continued Wednesday as firefighters made progress in containing the Camp fire that burned the town of Paradise. The fire has killed at least 56 people, destroyed more than 10,300 structures and scorched 138,000 acres in Butte County. It was 35% contained as of Wednesday evening, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials. Firefighters will continue to strengthen containment lines throughout the day and keep an eye out for hot spots in the area, Cal Fire said. Air tankers were preparing

The good thing about screwing up is that you can learn from your mistakes and do better next time. That, of course, assumes you are not a Republican Party official, because the GOP Establishment seems largely incapable of learning from its mistakes. We should try again anyway. We won some races, but we lost a lot more. Losing has one advantage over winning – pain is a better teacher than joy. After all, winning generally teaches you the wrong lessons. It makes you complacent. Look at Texas. The governor did worse than expected; Ted Cruz had a close call, and down ballot

President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron have a unique and often strained relationship. They alternate between clashing with and fawning over one another, because even though they are quite different people, they seek similar goals: the greatness of their countries. The age difference and generational dynamic explain some of the ups and downs of this relationship, as do the different political cultures of the two countries. But there is more to it than that. There is the history of each country and our relationship across history; there is the current state of world affairs

President Trump has not received adequately grateful recognition for withdrawing from the Paris climate accord and effectively scuttling the Clean Power Plan. These measures, which reinforced each other and were an outright assault on American capitalism and economic growth, were, with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and the nuclear giveaway to Iran, the core of Barack Obama’s effort to be a transformative president. The whole basis of the Clean Power Plan and the Paris climate accord was false from the beginning, yet the premise on which they were based attained a tremendous level of momentum and effectively bulldozed opposition

MIAMI — Sen. Bill Nelson has flooded the Florida courts with lawsuits, claiming that his Senate race against Gov. Rick Scott has been marred by an unfair treatment of absentee ballot mail-in deadlines and signature mismatches, among a host of other issues. But experts say Nelson faces long odds in his bid to flip the results in the race, with Scott leading by 12,652 votes heading into the contest´s automatic recount, which ends Thursday and will likely lead to a manual recount next. Nelson has two major problems, experts say: Nelson´s lawsuits were filed so late and courts generally frown

Sen. Jeff Flake announced Wednesday that he will not vote to advance any new judicial nominees through the Judiciary Committee, nor will he vote to confirm picks on the Senate floor, until he gets his way on unrelated legislation to prevent the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller. Mr. Flake made the announcement on the Senate floor minutes after his bid to pass the bill failed. His threat could block the committee from approving any more judges this year, since the GOP only holds a one-seat majority on the panel. It’s less catastrophic to approving judges on the Senate floor,
