Sears Is Dead — Long Live Sears!

Sears, RIP: Bowing to the inevitable, Sears´ owners on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Yes, it´s a sad day for the 126-year-old company. But it´s not a tragic story, for it underscores the underlying vibrancy, innovation and creativity of American capitalism. Monday´s filing came as Sears faced a deadline for payment of $134 million on its debt. It didn´t have the money, so it filed for protection from its creditors. Eddie Lampert — the largest shareholder in the company, with nearly half its shares — stepped down as CEO. By the end of this year, Sears will be a much-diminished company.

Ironically, Sears built its business with mail order from catalogs...and is being killed off by its inability to adapt to the Amazon on-line model. JCPenneys is not far behind.

Probably in another 50 years brick and mortar
stores will be on the rise again as internet sales begin to decline. It´s a vicious circle.
Au revoir Sears. Till we "shop" again.

Walk through any major mall. the specialty shops that used to occupy most of the storefronts are gone, due to the high rents charged.

This left the Anchor Stores, Sears, Macy´s etc. Trying to make money in a ghost town.

Add to this the other reasons listed by other posters, and the end was inevitable.

Another American Icon gone. Poor management? Inferior products? Amazon? Ebay? Walmart destroyed many mom and pop stores across America. Walmart once touted they only sold Made in America products. Certainly not anymore. I don´t shop Walmart because the closest one to me is 15 miles away and it was a dump. Much to my surprised theyn remodeled it. A friend dragged me along to Walmart and I was shocked at the physical improvement. Same lowfife´s working there and ditto for many of their toothless customers.

Started sensing big problems when the service end of the operation began to become haphazard and then non-existent. Same thing in-store, too.

Worst thing for a business is to be short-staffed.

Why oh why did they give up their catalogue sales and emphasize brick and mortar when the whole world went to online shopping? Their catalogue shopping was a natural for the internet.

Agree with #6, They already had thousands of customers used to ordering ´online´ so to speak and wait for delivery. Sears would have been a natural for the internet.

Amazon is vulnerable though....someone is likely to figure out a better, cheaper faster way in the future. They would also be in big trouble along with other internet retailers if the internet were to go down for an extended period...EMP, cyberattack, etc.

Almost everyone in my family worked at Sears at one time or another. One uncle was a big executive. He had tons of stock when he passed away which made my dad, his brother, and his two sisters very comfortable in their retirement years. We loved going to Sears.

Eddie Lampert stepped down as CEO but remains the chairman of the board. A competent bankruptcy judge would remove Lampert entirely. He´s an incompetent parasite who has devoured Sears and Kmart for over a decade.

Global Warming: Everyone makes mistakes, but some mistakes are bigger than others. That´s the case with a recent study based on a climate model that claimed the oceans had retained 60% more warming than previously thought. It made headlines around the world with its alarming conclusion. The study itself, by no fewer than ten authors, made sweeping claims. The authors wrote that the study held "implications for policy-relevant measurements of the Earth response to climate change, such as climate sensitivity to greenhouse gases and the thermal component of sea-level rise."

Environmentalism: A new report calls the lie on the grand Paris climate change treaty. None of the promised cuts in CO2 emissions that 200-plus countries made will come close to preventing a climate "catastrophe." And many of the industrialized nations aren´t even living up to the promises they did make. Two years ago, when the Paris agreement took effect, then-President Obama declared that "history may well judge it as a turning point for our planet." It was a turning point in the level of empty rhetoric, perhaps. But it won´t make a bit of difference to the planet.

Debt: We´ve written about the threat our growing federal debt poses a number of times in past years. But it was usually posed as a hypothetical problem in the distant future. Well, guess what: It´s now about to become a real problem. And Americans will discover a tough lesson: There ain´t no such thing as a free lunch. As Jeffrey Goldblum said in the horror movie "The Fly," "Be afraid. Be very afraid." Because, as in the horror movie genre, our monster debt could just gobble up our entire federal budget.

Energy: Has any politician ever been more wrong than Barack Obama was about U.S. oil production and energy independence? Based on the latest report from the International Energy Agency, the answer is unequivocally no. On Tuesday, oil prices fell for the 12th consecutive decline. And amid that decline, the International Energy Agency forecasts that the U.S. will account for 75% of the growth in global oil production through 2025. That´s a stunning finding that shows how dynamic the domestic oil and gas industry has become.

Election 2018: Democrats took control of the House by talking endlessly about health care. But it turns out their actual priorities are things that they didn´t talk about much on the campaign trail. Now we know why. After having safely won the House majority, Democrats revealed their two top legislative priorities for next year: Limits on free speech and gun control. In other words, assaults on rights protected by the First Amendment and Second Amendment. The Democratic leader in the House, Nancy Pelosi, promises that the first bill voted on by the new Congress will focus on campaign finance and ethics reforms.

Poverty: Recent reports suggest that America has made no progress at all in its "War on Poverty" since the 1960s. Headlines claim "one in eight" Americans live in poverty. But is that true? It depends on how you define poverty. And the answer matters a lot, since it determines so much of U.S. economic policy, from food stamps to minimum wages, and from taxes to welfare work requirements. It´s true: Official poverty data from the U.S. Census show little change since the 1960s.

Health Reform: Democrats campaigned heavily on promises to preserve ObamaCare´s protections for people with "pre-existing conditions." And the polls seem to back them up. But do they? Across the country, Democrats attacked their Republican opponents on the issue, saying that the GOP wanted to take away this protection. (Which wasn´t entirely true, but that´s another story.) And they plan to keep the pressure on. What does that midterm outcome mean for President Trump´s economic policies of tax cuts, aggressive trade sanctions, immigration and deregulation? Gridlock. The exact numbers of each branch may not be known for days, but as of late election night, it was clear Republicans had enlarged their hold on the Senate, while Democrats had taken back control of the House. It has been speculated that Mitt Romney’s Utah Senate seat could serve as a prelude to another Presidential run. In the most ambitious version of events, he could even challenge Donald Trump in the 2020 primaries, newly legitimized and augmented by his actions in the Capitol Building. This would allow moderate Republicans to reclaim their party’s mantle and unroot alt-right influences. But would Romney do it? His willingness to unequivocally challenge Trump could be seen either as a pro or con by Republicans, depending on their opinions of the sitting president.

To look back at the moment John Kerry entered US public life, addressing the Senate foreign relations committee on 22 April 1971, is to be struck by many things. There are the famous words, of course: “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?” There is the shock of dark, Beatles-inspired hair, the distinctly British-tinged accent. Above all, there is the self-possession.
