Middle And High School Students Cite
Anxiety In Attempt To Kill Presenting

Middle and high school students are citing anxiety as their reason for pushing back against assigned in-class presentations as research shows that nearly one-third of teenagers have an anxiety disorder. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that an estimated 31.9 percent of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 exhibit some form of anxiety. It’s an increase that experts say has been driven by the rise of social media, more pressure on students to go to college and other factors. Students and teachers are split about whether offering alternatives to oral presentations will help anxious students or hurt

What in the hell are they talking about?

These shy, neurotic "students" don´t seem to have any problem screaming there lungs out on national television, ranting and raving about how their "safe spaces" have been violated, how Trump is going to "kill everybody", the unspeakable horror of hearing a conservative speak and most of all relentlessly lecturing the rest of us with their idiotic opinions on anything and everything.

As a youngster that age, I was very anxious about speaking in front of class or a full school assembly. All of us were still expected to do it from time to time.

As an adult I found it easy to make presentations.

There is no disorder except in the minds of those who must find a disorder in what is normal. As for excuses about doing school work of any kind, young people are full of them.

In their defense, public speaking is one of the most common phobias -- even among accomplished, well-qualified adults. Most people DREAD getting up in front of an audience. As for myself, I love giving presentations, and I always have. I did speech and debate in high school, and I found a career that lends itself to public appearances. But I have a visceral fear of heights, and I break out in a cold sweat when I try to imagine someone forcing me to climb a ladder, or perch on the edge of a cliff, or admire a scenic overlook. I´d probably throw up. If that´s what public speaking feels like to most people, I´d say they can take a pass. Leave that job for those of us who enjoy it.

My hands would shake when giving a presentation but I did it, many times, as required. If I had not learned how to handle it, there are many things I would not have done as an adult. Test anxiety, presentation anxiety, on and on. Why ask the children to do anything?

When I was 12, my mother signed me up for a summer swim team at one of our municipal pools. She did this without my consent. She said it would be good for me both physically and socially. I did not want to go. I was terrified. I was a pudgy girl who was quite white from the winter, but I went because I loved my mother. I knew no one on the team and I was a mediocre swimmer. My mother sat outside the fence twice a day watching me practice and she attended every swim meet. It was truly one of the scariest things, at that point in my life, and one of the best things I ever did. I was fit, tan, had new friends and had learned that I can do things that are scary and survive. Was an absolute cure for my awkwardness? No, but it sure didn´t hurt to do it. And, I am a life-long lap swimmer now.
Buck up young people, there´s a whole world out there to conquer, starting inside your own heads.

Group presentations are really a much better idea than single presentations. It forces kids to learn that everyone has an ability and to cooperate with each other. I always decided on the groups - it caused kids to solve problems and value others. Not everyone is a good public speaker - and not everyone has the handwriting to make nice posters. We are all different.

I call BS. Adolescents and teenagers are perpetually anxious about everything; their hair, nails, clothes, iPhones, pimples, dates, cars, drugs. So what´s new?

Second, they seem to be cringing snowflakes, not the least bit afraid of bashing and threatening someone from behind a keyboard but God forbid they should be asked to actually prepare for a class assignment and they fall apart.

Please. Grow up. And that goes for the kids as well.

These kids are going to grow up without knowing how to have a face to face conversation because they have their noses in their phones 24/7. Should the schools not require them to speak to anyone because it might make them anxious?

I had to present a report on Susan B. Anthony in 8th grade and was a hot mess while giving it. It was a traumatic event in my life, but looking back, it would have been wrong to let me skip it because of my anxiety. They will never learn anything until they try it.

Grab the twit and stand them in front of the class. Force ´em to speak, if ya have to push the words out with your foot well place at THE other end.
In high school (there was no ´middle school" then) we had class presentations as part of our grade. Speak or fail. One thing I´ve learned from that, the people in the audience will think you´re brilliant for being on the podium speaking. Like the commercial says "never let them see you sweat" Just calmly state your piece and leave.
For me, ... if there is a microphone and a stage, ... I will use it.

I also have acrophobia like #6. I can´t even look at those daredevil pictures in high places. I don´t think I can ever shake that fear.

It´s a rite of passage in youth. American kids want to be protected from any perceived pain. I present all the time, and it´s really not all that difficult. Just know your subject matter better than anyone else, and think to yourself those people in the audience really want to learn. And when you have the floor you have the opportunity to put major put-downs to anyone who acts up.

Is this a case of mistaken identity? Accuser Christine Blasey Ford is waging a war on Trump’s SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh with decades-old, unsubstantiated claims of sexual assault in an effort to derail his confirmation to the Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh has categorically denied the allegations and even told Senator Orin Hatch he wasn’t at the party in question. Ed Whelan, Justice Scalia’s former law clerk and president of conservative think tank the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), came out in defense of Brett Kavanaugh and said compelling evidence will come out next week exonerating Kavanaugh.
