The distraught son of a late California scientist is suing a cryogenics firm and claims the lab wrongly cremated his father´s body and preserved only his head. Kurt Pilgeram claims in a new lawsuit against the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Alcor Life Extension Foundation that he received a package containing Dr. Laurence Pilgeram´s cremated body - which was allegedly against the family´s agreement. Legal documents obtained by The Telegraph state that Kurt opened the package that ´purportedly contained his father´s cremated remains, except allegedly for his father´s head.´ Laurence was 90 when he died from an apparent cardiac

Now yellow with 30 years of age on my refrigerator door is an old Far Side cartoon: Frozen Friends Cryogenic Enterprises with a large cooling unit with separate compartments for whole bodies (fully dressed) and just heads only and a warning to maintain minus-200 degrees. A workman for Bob´s Janitorial Services accidentally gets his feet tangled up in the power cord and unplugs the whole thing. The heads, especially, don´t look real happy to be there.

I recall Ted Williams´s body´s (or just head´s) travails. Pathetic. Frozen solid as a brickbat. Porcelain DNA. He ain´t coming back. Can´t he leave well enough alone? He still wants to come back! Why? Does he think he´ll still hit .406 as he did in ´41? Does he still covet the ´41 MVP that Joe DiMaggio beat him out of? Isn´t heaven good enough? Oh, maybe that´s why he wants to come back. Never mind.

Not having a body to go with the head is the least of the problems. Every bit of us are made up of cells that contain 85% water. Notice what frozen water does to containers? Shards of ice do that to every cell. So the task isn´t to thaw them out and fix what killed them, the task is to thaw them out and fix every single brain cell and make them work like they did before they died. Even in the inconceivable future where we could do such a thing, why would we? Maybe for a human demonstration experiment. Research lab rat? That what they hope for? Making new people is a lot more fun and more rewarding. The human popsicles paid to keep themselves frozen, there isn´t enough money in the world to repair the damage even if we could. It´s all silly.

#10 - I think the vision was to preserve the head until the contents of the mind could be transferred to something more-durable, with the hope that it is enough of the ´self´ to extend conscious existence indefinitely. Which would theoretically allow Ted to resume knocking the snot out of the ball in a freshly-minted android body.

Assuming we avoid civilizational suicide long enough to devise something worth even testing (only to discover that there´s far more to the ´self´ than the collective neural states in our noggins), it might have been so long since MLB saw a .400 hitter that even a Zombie Splinter would be considered a superstar.

A sordid new lawsuit charges the “worst nightmare of any woman” was a constant reality for ballerinas at the New York City Ballet — surreptitious, sexually explicit photos snapped and shared freely by their male colleagues. A 19-year-old dancer/victim, in a sleazy depiction of the venerable ballet as little more than an artsy “Animal House,” portrayed the organization as a perverted “breeding ground” for the sexual degradation of female dancers by their twisted male colleagues. Dancer Alexandra Waterbury alleged that she was victimized by hard-partying dancer Chase Finlay — named as co-defendant along with the ballet company.

The West Virginia House of Delegates voted on Monday to impeach the state’s entire Supreme Court, a remarkable move occasioned by reports of extravagant spending by the court’s five members, one of whom resigned in July. Of the four impeached justices, one, Allen H. Loughry II, also faces 23 federal counts of fraud, witness tampering, lying to a federal agent and obstruction of justice. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 405 years in prison and a fine of $5.75 million. He pleaded not guilty and was suspended without pay in June. Watching the slow, public evisceration of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by Senate Democrats —on the strength of one unsubstantiated charge of alleged sexual aggression 36 years ago when Kavanaugh was in high school — a question comes to mind: Have you no sense of decency, Sen. Feinstein? Decency was once an important feature of the Democratic Party’s story. Long before Bork became a verb, long before Clarence Thomas was dragged through the mud because a conservative black man proved a profound threat to Democrats, the party held fast to the notion of decency.
