Workers from 25 hotels strike
in downtown Chicago

WGN-TV (Chicago), by AP and Judy Wang

Original Article

Workers are picketing outside several downtown Chicago hotels as housekeepers, servers, cooks and others participate in a strike as part of an effort to get better benefits. The Friday walkout began at 5:00 a.m. at 25 large and boutique hotels. It comes after members of the hotel workers´ union, Unite Here Local 1, voted to authorize a strike amid contract negotiations. Their current contract expired Aug. 31. Six-thousand workers are striking, the largest hotel walkout in Chicago history. The union says better health care coverage is among the demands. Workers say they deserve higher wages, more manageable workloads

Comments:
Just one more reason to avoid Chicago.

This is just what Chicago needs, more people demanding more money. The only difference is that these aren´t government "workers." The quotes are to emphasize the fact that I have never seen a Chicago city worker actually lift a finger anywhere.

Looking into hotel worker wages in Chicago (curiously lacking in this info-lite article)seems like they are only making 12-15 bucks average. Plus bennies, probably. The thing is - it´s not very good money, and as Private employees, who CAN get fired for doing a bad job - I´m sure most work their tushies off. It doesn´t take great skill or education, no - and jobs that require such do pay more. But not everyone is qualified, and a hotel job is real work, all day long. If employees in these and similar lower scale jobs are raising families - (many are - slackers don´t take labor intensive jobs like these) and they are full time and long term, if a strike is the only way to get more, I fully support that. I am no fan of unions, but in rare instances they serve actual workers like they´re supposed to. I don´t know what share of the hotel business pie goes to employee wages. This article never even thinks about it. But I think it would be a great piece of info to have.

Yup, keep striking and demanding until the Hotel runs out of guests who can pay the higher room and tax rates. "Economics 101" challenged Unions probably won´t understand this concept. Besides, why risk losing your life going to Chicago?

A Northwest Side priest has been removed about a week after he burned a rainbow flag outside his church. Protesters had been demanding Cardnial Blase Cupich take action against the Rev. Students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are demanding more “inclusive” ice cream at the university-owned Babcock Hall Dairy Store, arguing that current ingredients in some of the store’s products are discriminatory toward certain religions. Eight members of the Associated Students of Madison put forth a resolution last week declaring that Babcock ice cream, which uses beef gelatin, discriminates against the school’s Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and vegetarian communities. The resolution, titled “Ice Cream for All,” would formally demand that the university administration “acknowledge the marginalization of having the official campus Ice Cream not be inclusive to religious students on campus.”

TAPACHULA, MEXICO -- A growing caravan of roughly 7,000 Central American immigrants continued its trek toward the United States on Sunday, blowing past Mexican police and immigration officials. The group, which has swelled in size in recent days, set out before dawn on the only road out of the small Mexican border town of Ciudad Hidalgo. It arrived in the afternoon in the city of Tapachula, more than 20 miles away. The migrants, nearly all from the poor and violent nation of Honduras, posed a growing political and humanitarian calamity for Mexico,

Every big U.S. election is interesting, but the coming midterms are fascinating for a reason most commentators forget to mention: The Democrats have no issues. The economy is booming and America’s international position is strong. In foreign affairs, the U.S. has remembered in the nick of time what Machiavelli advised princes five centuries ago: Don’t seek to be loved, seek to be feared. The contrast with the Obama years must be painful for any honest leftist.

This is beyond odd, but here goes. I rise to defend Hillary Clinton. She is under attack and this time, the long knives are wielded by members of her own clan. Suddenly, after two years of indulging Clinton’s blame games and pity parties, lefty pundits say she’s talking too much, she’s stuck in the past, she had her chance and she blew it. Vanity Fair, declaring that she “still hasn’t learned the lessons of #MeToo,” is furious that Clinton said her husband’s Oval Office dalliance with Monica Lewinsky was not an abuse of power

In a recent statement, the animal advocate organization explains that dairy milk has been the drink of choice for supremacists because "the dairy industry inflicts extreme violence on other living beings." The fact that Christine Blasey Ford’s lawyers refused to release the results of her polygraph exam until the day before her testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee last month caused some suspicion. And when we finally got a look at them, a lot of Judge Kavanaugh’s supporters were confirmed in their suspicions. It turned out that Ford’s examiner, former FBI agent Jeremiah Hanafin, only asked her two relevant questions. And that’s not how most folks imagine polygraph exams are supposed to go.
