Beto O’Rourke Faces New Political Perils
As Launch of Fall Campaign Begins

Texas Monthly, by R. G. Ratcliffe and Carlos Sanchez

The political momentum seems to be blowing in the direction of Beto O’Rourke. The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate had a video go viral of him defending NFL players’ right to take a knee during the national anthem, prompting an appearance next week on Ellen DeGeneres’s TV show. (Snip)It’s a world that O’Rourke has seamlessly navigated so far not because of any stroke of brilliance, said one Democratic operative, but because of dumb luck. “This campaign is not prepared to fight a traditional campaign,” said one member of O’Rourke’s campaign who asked that his name not be used

One of his yard signs appeared in a neighbor´s yard. First, it enraged me to think there might be one of "them" living anywhere near me. I resisted the urge to go rip the sign in two. Then it reminded me how important it is to vote November. So the sign backfired.

Here in south Texas, I see a lot of Hispanics wearing Trump shirts and MAGA caps in the grocery stores/lumberyards/fast food restaurants. The strong economy and Trump´s unrelenting conservative agenda have people optimistic and energized. My guess is voter turnout will be strong and a record number of minority voters will vote a straight Republican ticket in November. Cruz will thrash O´Rourke.

Deep in the article is the fact that the Republican party of TX has the nuts-and-bolts infrastructure that can deliver votes on election day. But Beto relies on being ´liked´ on Facebook and Retweeted on Twitter as a gauge of his viability. Outside of the urban wards of Austin and other cities, Beto will have little support.

fta..."The political momentum seems to be blowing in the direction of Beto O’Rourke..."

The media is IN THE TANK spreading the Kool-Aid!

They have been against Senator Cruz, and always have been. Mr Trump´s outlandish lies about the Seantor´s father (via Roger Stone) were played out like a borken record for weeks.

The"Texas" Monthly mostly covers the big cities and the "hipsters" taking over the small towns with trendy restaurants and boutique shops these days.

There are numerous "Beto" yard signs all around funded larely with OUT OF STATE MONEY, in an effort to upend Constitutional conservative Cruz.

When Robert Francis O´Rourke goes somewhere the media covers it, especially the ´new´media in an appeal to younger voters.

When the Senator goes on these same communities it only gets local media attention.

Most Texans do not cotton to being made out as uneducated fools....and neither did the country overlook Hitlery´s brazen crookedness walking all over people who could not do something for her.

The had no chance with Wendy "Abortion Barbie" DAvis, even though she had tons and tons ou out of state money. Beto Pancho, for all the positive media saturation is still likely to meet the same fate--open borders and lawlessness don´t play well in Texas YET.

Again, Texas Monthly has two excellent reasons for subscribing. 1. Its coverage of Texas BBQ, a meal that is universally loved by all Texans and 2. The Texanist, who is a cowboy-style "Miss Manners" on all things Texan.

I´ll spend 20 minutes on those two and about 10 on the rest of the magazine.

For the last couple of months, O´Rourke has been running TV ads showing that he is a nice guy who looks like a Kennedy, who doesn´t take evil PAC money, and who is visiting all 254 counties in Texas to meet the people. Just a regular good old boy.

But NOT one of those ads says anything about his BELIEFS!!!!

However, we are starting to see more and more video of him saying things like:

* the government needs to CONFISCATE guns from law abiding citizens,

* ABORTION should be LEGAL for 9 months and PAID for by the government

* that the BORDERS should be OPEN, and the government should provide full benefits for all illegal aliens who make it past the border

And the list goes on and on -- all things totally out of touch with how most Texans believe!!!! Expect lots of ads with video clips showing him actually saying these things as we get closer to November.

And if he doesn´t chicken out on the rest of the debates (like he did with one last week), Cruz will eat him for lunch!!!

Sparked by his narrow defeat in a Texas Senate race, Beto O’Rourke is scrambling the 2020 presidential primary field, freezing Democratic donors and potential campaign staffers in place as they await word of his plans. Even prior to O’Rourke’s meteoric rise, many Democratic fundraisers had approached the large number of 2020 contenders with apprehension, fearful of committing early to one candidate. But the prospect of a presidential bid by O’Rourke, whose charismatic Senate candidacy captured the party’s imagination, has suddenly rewired the race.

Paradise, California- Kevin McKay drove the school bus along gridlocked, dark roads as pockets of fire burned all around. Nearly two dozen elementary school children were on board with him. Smoke began to fill the bus, so McKay took off a shirt. He and two teachers on the bus tore it into pieces and doused them with water. The children held the damp pieces of cloth to their mouths and breathed through them. He had been on the job, driving the bus for Ponderosa Elementary School in the northern California city of Paradise, only for a few months.

Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was arrested on suspicion of under-reporting $44.6 million in pay, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office said Monday. Also arrested was Greg Kelly, a representative director at Nissan, on suspicion of conspiracy with Ghosn. In 1999, French automaker Renault and the Japanese automaker formed a strategic alliance. Ghosn, 64, was then sent by Renault to take over as chief operating officer of Nissan. Nissan CEO Hirota Saikawa, taking the unusual step of appearing by himself in a news conference, criticized the concentration of too much power by a single individual.

Seventy-six people are dead. At least 1,276 are missing. And more than 7 million have been confined to their homes, as a cloud of toxic, corrosive ash darkens their windows and creeps under their doors. The Camp Fire—which is still burning across some 232 square miles of Northern California—now ranks among the worst natural disasters to hit the United States this century. Only a handful of hurricanes and a “super outbreak” of tornadoes in 2011 have killed more Americans. This fire has robbed more Californians of their lives than has any earthquake since 1933.

When Mostafa Zamanian voted last week in Shorewood Hills, Wis., he got lucky: He was in the short line. “Of 19 in hallway, only two of us were N-Z and didn’t have to wait to vote,” he tweeted. Like other places, Mr. Zamanian’s precinct split up voters based on their last names. Those beginning with A to M were steered one way, while those beginning with N to Z were directed elsewhere. Intuitively, that makes sense: It’s the midpoint of the alphabet—so you end up with two equal queues, right? Wrong.

Second, core concerns raised by leading Republicans (some of which were rhetorically overblown) have been validated by multiple judges. The ineptitude and misconduct has not gone unnoticed. It has been speculated that Mitt Romney’s Utah Senate seat could serve as a prelude to another Presidential run. In the most ambitious version of events, he could even challenge Donald Trump in the 2020 primaries, newly legitimized and augmented by his actions in the Capitol Building. This would allow moderate Republicans to reclaim their party’s mantle and unroot alt-right influences. But would Romney do it? His willingness to unequivocally challenge Trump could be seen either as a pro or con by Republicans, depending on their opinions of the sitting president.

To look back at the moment John Kerry entered US public life, addressing the Senate foreign relations committee on 22 April 1971, is to be struck by many things. There are the famous words, of course: “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?” There is the shock of dark, Beatles-inspired hair, the distinctly British-tinged accent. Above all, there is the self-possession.
