Amsterdam stabbing suspect had
"terrorist" motive, officials say

Amsterdam - An Afghan man shot by police at Amsterdam´s central station on Friday after stabbing two American tourists had a "terrorist" motive, city officials said on Saturday. The suspect, who was identified as a 19-year-old Afghan with a German residence permit, was questioned on Saturday in hospital where he was being treated for gunshot wounds to his lower body. "First statements made by the suspect indicate he had a terrorist motive," Amsterdam city council said in a statement. German police searched the man´s house at the request of their Dutch colleagues and seized several data carriers, the authorities said.

Comments:
Instead of keeping these people in their native containment areas, Angela Merkel and her ilk welcome them to the West where their sworn enemies are easier to attack.

Gee, his two victims are hospitalized and in serious condition and the Dutch have to "decide" if this monster should remain in custody? Yikes. btw, almost everybody who visits the Netherlands passes through that station.

The UN’s environment chief, Erik Solheim, has resigned following severe criticism of his global travels and internal rule-breaking which led some nations to withhold their funding. The Guardian understands Solheim was asked to resign by the UN secretary general, António Guterres. (Snip) A draft internal UN audit leaked to the Guardian in September found Solheim had spent almost $500,000 (£390,000) on air travel and hotels in just 22 months, and was away 80% of the time. The audit said this was a “reputation risk” for an organisation dedicated to fighting climate change. A UN staff union leader called some

They are the advance line of the migrant caravan that Donald Trump has said is attempting an “invasion” of the US. But, as a 400-strong group of asylum-seeking Central Americans arrived in the Mexican border town of Tijuana on Saturday, they appeared more concerned with love than war. The splinter caravan – which is made up of dozens of LGBTQ+ people – was in celebratory mood as two of its members, 23-year-old Erick Dubon and Pedro Nehemias, 22, got married. The couple – originally from Honduras where same-sex unions are banned – tied the knot ahead of applying for asylum

Investigators are examining a work of art to establish whether it is a Picasso snatched from a Dutch museum in 2012. The painting, Picasso’s Tete d’Arlequin (Harlequin’s Head) was stolen six years ago in a haul of seven valuable artworks from the Kunsthal gallery in Rotterdam. The Romanian prosecutor in Bucharest said on Sunday that officials were examining a painting that a novelist said she found under a tree after receiving an anonymous tip. The work, purported to be the stolen Picasso, was given to the Dutch embassy in Romania on Saturday. Four Romanians were convicted of stealing Tete d’Arlequin

It was the great microchip heist — a stunning Chinese-backed effort that pilfered as much as $8.75 billion in patented American technology. U.S. officials say the theft took a year to pull off and involved commercial spies, a Chinese-backed company, a Taiwanese chipmaker and employees affiliated with Micron Technology, a U.S.-based microchip behemoth. Yet what Micron called “one of the boldest schemes of commercial espionage in recent times” is most notable because it’s not unusual. Beijing over the last two years has significantly ramped up its swiping of commercial technology and intellectual property, from jet engines to genetically modified rice

Championing the cause of the poor, Pope Francis on Sunday lamented that "the wealthy few" enjoy what, "in justice, belongs to all" and said Christians cannot remain indifferent to the growing cries of the exploited and the indigent, including migrants. Francis invited about 6,000 poor people as well as some of the volunteers who help them to the splendor of St. Peter´s Basilica where he celebrated Mass on a day the Catholic Church dedicates to the needy. Later, he sat down with 1,500 of the indigent for a lunch of lasagna, chicken, mashed potatoes and tiramisu in a Vatican auditorium.

He was only there because he received a cryptic phone call that consisted of just three words: "Watch the game." Still, the message was received. There was only one reason he could have received such a strange call: After four years,

Mirebalais, Haiti — Cervical cancer is a disease that Haiti cannot afford. And in most cases, it’s a disease the country’s broken healthcare system cannot treat. There is just one MRI scanner in the entire country of 11 million people. Radiation treatment does not exist — for any kind of cancer — because there are no machines. Cancer screenings and early detection programs are limited, and so is access to lifesaving care. In a country already struggling to manage maternal deaths and childhood diseases that have been largely controlled in other parts of the world, cervical cancer is nearly always a death
