What I noticed.

1) Bush looks exhausted and like he's dropped a little weight. He also looks like he's tired of explaining this stuff over and over again.

2) He was geniunely moved while talking about AIDS in Africa.

3) Hillary yawned. So classless.

4) Pat Caddell said, 'it was a helluva speech', Donna Brazile said it was 'powerful but not enough'.

5) It will never be enough for some folks.

Dim response:

It's all Bush's fault!

thwapp?

Reply 3 - Posted by: teegore, 1/28/2003 10:23:52 PM

I wish those weasel Dems would just crawl back into their holes. Can't stand them whining. Someone should tell them to pick up their toys, and go home and cry.

Reply 4 - Posted by: GOP_U_BET, 1/28/2003 10:23:58 PM

I thought Tiny Tommy looked awful, his face had all the warmth and charm of a poorly embalmed corpse.

I noticed one of the dimocrat women, I think it was sheila jackson-lee kept jumping up and applauding. She had on a huge green and white scarf.

Reply 5 - Posted by: Bugg, 1/28/2003 10:24:29 PM

Hillary! should use a mirror when applying lipstick.

Locke will be catapulted from this speech-out of office. This could be bottled for sleepless nights. They're back with the Clinton apprach of treating this like a wish list. Is he up to the "basic food groups" yet?

A great speech by a great President.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Texas Memaw, 1/28/2003 10:25:19 PM

Not poor Gov. Locke...more like stupid Gov. Locke. Kerry, Daschle, Edwards and the rest knew it would be political suicide to speak a rebuttal to President Bush. Looks like the DNC USED Gov. Locke.

Reply 7 - Posted by: PatrickHenry599, 1/28/2003 10:25:31 PM

Poor Gov. Locke --- You talk about appearing to be whiney and seeming insignificant, this poor guy is going to want to punch out the dude who talked him into following the speech given by our President. I had to mute him after a few minutes because my ribs were getting sore from laughing so hard.

Reply 8 - Posted by: Ole Doc Farmer, 1/28/2003 10:25:37 PM

From the sublime to the pedunculous. We've had 59 minutes of Handel, only to be forced, at the hands of this Washington State weasel, to suffer through some gradeschool punk's rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle."

And, yes, I think that particular title is particularly apt.

Reply 9 - Posted by: Plaid, 1/28/2003 10:25:43 PM

Get a load of the lying Chinee-man.

His "state" refused to "profile" ragheads because they are sensitive to terrorists and he comes on here and says his state caught an Al-Qaeda operative with a load of explosives in his trunk. Liar.

This scumbag is a lying maggot. He needs to go home to Red China. It seems that's the kind of country he prefers to live in.

Grasshopper. Go home to your "grandfather."

Reply 10 - Posted by: michiganrepublican, 1/28/2003 10:26:00 PM

"Who are those four in uniform who do not change facial expressions, do not clap, do not stand??? "

I think this has already been addressed, but one of the great traditions and foundations of the USA is that the military serves the civilian government and not visa versa,

Therefore, even if in their hearts the joint chiefs wanted to stand up and cheer, it would not be the right thing to do. The seperation of the military from partisan politics is far more important than the seperation of Church and state.

Reply 11 - Posted by: Blue Moon, 1/28/2003 10:26:06 PM

Locke is a milque-toasty kind of Dem, not offensive but sooooo yawwwnnnnn ... I guess they chose to go with a guy like this instead of a firebrand like Lee, Hitlery, or some other high profile response. ZZZZZ

Reply 12 - Posted by: bubber, 1/28/2003 10:26:10 PM

What speech was this Locke guy listening to?

Reply 13 - Posted by: DonQuijote, 1/28/2003 10:26:11 PM

Democratic response is on. VERY confrontational and negative. Locke looks bitter, using negative words and phrases"failed" etc. Hope America sees this same negativity.

wonderful, wonderful speech. I want to know how Hillary got such a good seat. How I hate seeing her snotty face. And Nancy Pelosi! What sarcastic smirk was that?

Reply 19 - Posted by: lexusep@aol.com, 1/28/2003 10:27:17 PM

Locke actually said that the demos will not "pander" to special interests! What a dope. Guess that means unions, greens, Hollywood simply do not exist.

Dear Heavenly Father

Thank you for our Nation and our President. We pray for your will and wisdom for us. Help us to defend ourselves and others against evil. We pray that we may turn to you in our hour of need.

Please bless and protect our President, our Leaders, our Military and most of all our Country. Thank you Lord for Freedom. Please help us not to take it for granted.

In your name I pray. Amen

Reply 21 - Posted by: allegra, 1/28/2003 10:28:27 PM

Nancy Pelosi laughed when Bush outlined his Tax proposal...or maybe she was frowing - so hard to tell with her face pulled back like that.

Ted Kennedy looked like he needed to be wound up. His nephew's nose was terrifyingly red.

John Kerry is the most unattractive human being on the planet after Hillary.

I know the president meant the speech to be serious...but a little levity in the beginning might have been good.

The AIDS section kicked rear end and this whole section did, too: From "if this is not evil, then evil has no meaning" to "your enemy is ruling your country".

It's always amusing to watch Chris Matthews after a speech - he always gets excited.

Reply 22 - Posted by: Thrawn, 1/28/2003 10:28:47 PM

Dim Gov. says we need to use our technology to decrease our dependence on foreign oil.

Uhhh, did he not listen to the speach?!?

Do Tiny Tom and Nancy Pe-Loser use the same embalmer?

Reply 24 - Posted by: Mrs.Claypool, 1/28/2003 10:29:36 PM

Our President is the best!!! The Dumbocrats are on now, and I know this because I can hear Mr. Claypool spouting very colorful language from his recliner in the living room. I give thanks EVERY day that George W. Bush is our President. And I am sure that the men and women of our military do too!!!

Reply 25 - Posted by: GOP_U_BET, 1/28/2003 10:29:39 PM

Personally, I thought all of the dims had an expression on their collective faces that was an ineffable mixture of the need of a really good laxative and the ever freshly dawning horror that power has irretrievably slipped from their grasp and that history will call them small women and men, who minged and cringed when America needed leaders and unity.

Reply 26 - Posted by: Pitts, 1/28/2003 10:30:01 PM

AMEN!

Reply 27 - Posted by: CheckSum, 1/28/2003 10:30:35 PM

Did Locke say '' My state improved education without extra Fed help. So naturally, the Fed should help all states?''

''The dims are for ... affermative action AND equal rights for all (mutually exclusive)...?''

I thought so.

Reply 28 - Posted by: shurnuff, 1/28/2003 10:30:59 PM

I don't know what happened to my other post..... it should have read:

Ohmigosh, what I wouldn't give to have seen the look on hillary's face when GW said, "This country has many challenges. We will not deny, we will not ignore, we will not pass along our problems to other Congresses, other presidents, and other generations. We will confront them with focus, and clarity, and courage."

A zinger...... right up front!!!

The camera panned to Edwards right at the frivolous lawsuit comments... he looks like he is sick to his stomach.....

.... Was Ted Kennedy asleep at one point? I thought I saw him nodding....

....hillary must have sat beside Loserman thinking he would make her look pretty.... didn't work!

Reply 29 - Posted by: dot66, 1/28/2003 10:31:06 PM

Haven't gotten to read all yet, but regarding the noo-q-ler question:

From M-W.com [Mirriam-Webster]--''usage Though disapproved of by many, pronunciations ending in \-ky&-l&r\ have been found in widespread use among educated speakers including scientists, lawyers, professors, congressmen, U.S. cabinet members, and at least one U.S. president and one vice president. While most common in the U.S., these pronunciations have also been heard from British and Canadian speakers''

It used to bug me too since I teach English, but it's one of those things where we can now either PRETEND the world were the way we WISH it were, or deal with it as it is. Grammarians declared the pronunciaton acceptable during Clinton's reign, and I came to my decision a number of years ago. So it didn't bother me at all to crawl over broken glass to vote for this President!!!!!!!!!

Reply 32 - Posted by: Embee, 1/28/2003 10:32:04 PM

For Nancy Pelosi to put party politics before our safety is absolutely evil. She is saying, with a straight face (ok.. her face can't move) that she isn't convinced of a ''clear and present danger''.

Even Tom Brokaw is prodding her toward moving off that stance, and she isn't budging. Wretched woman.

Reply 35 - Posted by: DonQuijote, 1/28/2003 10:32:14 PM

Chris Mathews asked, "What's up w?Hillary. She's always talking when the President is speaking." Donna Cowzille was about to defend her when Chris said, "It's called manners, lady!" Loved it. Unusual for Chris

Reply 36 - Posted by: pomom, 1/28/2003 10:32:20 PM

Even Juan Williams was touched by the two new initiatives - A.I.D.S. relief for Africa and mentorship for kids of prisoners and addicts. Stealing yet another of Bubba's initiatives while having to clean up his 8 yr mess.

I thought President Bush looked tired, p.o'd, and ready to do battle. What a man! There is no way I'm watching that doofus from Washington give the re-re-buttal after Pelosi and Daschle have already given the pre-buttal.
John McCain looked like his head was ready to fall off and Ted Kennedy looked like he's about one vodka too low.

Reply 37 - Posted by: GeorgiaOnMyMind, 1/28/2003 10:32:50 PM

A few random comments from Georgia:

Re the military men on the front row that didn't always stand -- at one time, General Myers, Chairman, JCOS, stood and appeared to be fighting back tears.

Daschle looked like the Satanic figure that he is.

I looked at Hillary and shuddered at the thought that she could be standing up there giving a SOTU one day.

Sure wish the Africans would wear condoms once in a while. No amount of money thrown at the African AIDS problem will make a dent in that problem.

Reply 38 - Posted by: vivaldi, 1/28/2003 10:32:55 PM

I tried really hard not to laugh out loud (well, not very hard) during Locke-out's feeble, snide attempt at rebuttal.

This from the maroon who blew through my state's surplus, blew through my state's rainy-day fund, and did his best to increase the gas tax by 9 cents a gallon last year.

Yup--he's REALLY concerned about tax cuts. NOT!

Reply 44 - Posted by: shipwreck_65, 1/28/2003 10:36:00 PM

The dems response was that we should not go into Iraq alone....how pathetic..First they know damned well we will not go in alone....but Bush said it in his speech;

THE COURSE OF THIS NATION DOES NOT DEPEND UPON THE DECISIONS OF OTHERS

If you are a Democrat you believe that the course of this nation does depend upon others. There is no other reason than this to vote Republican.

Reply 45 - Posted by: Mrs.Claypool, 1/28/2003 10:36:20 PM

Reply 46 - Posted by: TaxedAndSpent, 1/28/2003 10:36:45 PM

I think the part I liked the most was W's Dirty Harry characterization of certain Al Qaeda members being brought in alive and others, well, they were not so lucky.....
I really would like all that money being spent on AIDS, however, in Africa to be put to use instead on cancer research in this country. I would be in favor, though, of distributing all the condoms they would care to use.

This is how real America looks at our President. How we feel about him.

Sure wish the Africans would wear condoms once in a while. No amount of money thrown at the African AIDS problem will make a dent in that problem.

Unless, of course, the money being "thrown" at the problem is going toward providing contraceptive devices & education. Then, it seems the package would be prevention + maintenance for those infected w/HIV.

The Prez looked tired and somewhat sad. However, he came on resolute and very emotional at the right tim. His salute to Armed Forces was great. He smiled at someone during the speech. What a kind, gentle smile in such a strong, forceful man! Go, W!!!!! God be with you!

You are all such clear thinkers!
May I ask, at the risk of sounding ignorant: Aren't all the Supreme Court Justices usually there? I only saw one (Breyer?)

Think the longest applause was for our men and women in the Armed Forces: "You believe in America, and America believes in you."

And
Yes, that b*tch Pelosi WAS laughing and shaking her head when the President addressed tax cuts. So very base, so very low-rent. Hope she gets her head handed to her on that one.

Reply 55 - Posted by: Mrs M, 1/28/2003 10:39:16 PM

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS. Lord, how I love this man. Did you notice that the Dems were glued in their seats for all the things that the PEOPLE want ... like an end to partial birth abortion, tax cuts NOW and tort reform. Meanwhile, they sat there looking like the classless idiots they are.

You know, no WONDER the terrorists were so bold ... they figured they had a man who lied and never did what he said he was going to do. But President Bush says what he means and means what he says. And no WONDER the Democrats can't figure him out. They don't believe the truth when they hear it. They figure there MUST be a political motive because that's what they'd do.
God Bless this wonderful President. Today, I was upset because I had so much work left on my desk. Then I remembered the absolutely overloaded plate that our President and his cabinet have. So I quit complaining.

Reply 56 - Posted by: tantric, 1/28/2003 10:39:41 PM

Did I miss something in the news? Fox just reported that the President plans to give a speech to another joint session of Congress shortly after Powell (next week) gives information about Iraq's WMD program.

Looks like the President is about to swing the hammer.

Stupidest commentary so far on tv:
One of Frank Luntz's dem ladies - nasal voice, so very upset that Hillary stood up!!!

and Judy Woodruff: I am still marvelling: one third of the president's speech devoted to a country the size of California.

What a STOOOOPIT woman.

Reply 59 - Posted by: Embee, 1/28/2003 10:40:25 PM

Dashole just implied that President Bush is dictatorial and needs to work with Democrats more. Said he needs to ''learn'' to compromise more.

I just caught the last few seconds of his interview with that wretched Petah Jennings, so I don't know what else he said, but that was bad enough. Can anyone else fill me in on the first part of his ''speech''?

Reply 65 - Posted by: sunflower, 1/28/2003 10:42:44 PM

Well, if any democrats were watching this speech, and saw how little the democratic Congress agreed with President Bush on the economy, returning tax breaks to tax payers, they should be overwhelmed with his speech. He took care of the rich, the poor, the seniors, the aids epidemic, and the deemonkrats Congressional members barely stood up. They do not want President Bush helping these people, he might get one or two of their votes, I could not believe the support they gave the President, very little. and hitlery looked disgusting, as usual.

Reply 66 - Posted by: GiveMeFreedom, 1/28/2003 10:42:56 PM

Without a doubt, this was the worst SOTU speech in my lifetime (that I've watched and that's been many). Wherever he is, OBL must be smiling because he knows he's home-free. The administration failure to find OBL while trying to substitute Hussein for OBL is nothing short of pathetic.

We still have no connect-the-dots people in the WH. Get ready for more.

Reply 74 - Posted by: Victory, 1/28/2003 10:43:59 PM

The president looked worn by his burden, but well able to carry them because...well, let's apply his OWN words to HIM, shall we?

"Your training has prepared you." (life, hard knocks, past sins, redemption, and being his father's son and seeing what works and how its done up close)
"Your honor will guide you." (this is one of the MOST honorable men to hold this office, and his opponents are among the most DIShonorable so the contrast is even more striking)
"You believe in America and America believes in you."

And blesses you, Mr. President, and prays for you, and loves you in a way we've longed to love a president since your dad was Veep.

It's bad enough that the dems pushed poor Govenor Token out to give the "reply", obviously a choice NOT based on "the content of his character", without Ldotters offensive "chinee" remarks.
His race is not a matter of the Governor's choice, but his stupid political views are - beat up on the DNC, NOT DNA.

Bush TRIED to work with the dems. He gave Teddy Kennedy a free hand on Education - let him write the bill. One year later the dems, with Teddy at the lead, said; he doesn't do anything on education! We need more money for educaaaaation!

Daschle is projecting again. It's HIS folks need to learn to compromise.

From the first parts of the President's speech he discussed, in no specific order:
Hydrogen powered cars, tort reform for protection of doctors and hospitals ("No one was ever cured by a frivolous lawsuit), support for faith-based organizations, tax cuts NOW, economic growth via tax cuts NOW, eliminating the marriage penalty, increasing the child tax credit, more drugs/education for the African continent for the AIDS virus, anybody? Kerry needs a head transplant if he ever hopes to be president.Pelosi laughing at inappropraite times,Hillary her usual rude self,Daschle looked like he was reviewing casket brochures.Locke was an embarrassment-I'm sure Hillary set him up.

A great speech by a great president. I am so glad that he is ours. The Dems looked like a bunch of bad embalming jobs.

As for the Dem rebuttal, poor little Locke looked like the evil twin of the little black-haired girl who does the grapejuice commercials, chirpy voice, childish little smile and all. Pathetic.

God Bless President Bush. God Bless America.

No, the absolute WORST moment of a presidential speech was when Willy mouthed to Hilly 'I Love You'.....vomit!

Here comes the predictable dem response. Lets go back to the glory years of the democrats when Bill clinton was in charge. Lets have another dotcom stock bubble, lets have high interest rates from the fed, lets have some more telecom accounting scandals, and we'll all live happy ever after. Their idea of creating jobs is to give everyone a couple of hundred bucks. Yeah, lets create some more jobs for all those people overseas who make the stuff at Walmart. Good thinking guys.

I tried to adjust the "tint" control on my TV. Unfortunately I did it while Ted (Chappy) Kennedy was on. Now the color is wrong for everyone else.

Riiiiight, #66, the worst SOTU ever, right. I guess this speech just confirmed your opinion that Bush is still a draft-dodging drunken moron, worse than Saddam, with family connections to the Nazis, blah blah blah...

You liberals crack me up. You're going to look sillier and sillier as the weeks go by now.

Daschle is probably counting his lucky stars he does not have to face GW in 2004's election, and the others who have said they were going to run are beginning to feel ice in their veins and a sense of dread....

Disappointed about the Save The AIDS initiative to the Irresponsible African Nations. This was made to appease the Congressional Black Caucus and is a LOSE, LOSE, LOSE situation. Throwing HARD EARNED Tax Payers money at it will not correct the problem. Adopting a HEALTHY MORAL CODE of Self Control inclusive of accountable self responsibility and adhering to abstinence is the only 100% way of combating AIDS! It's that simple!

As far as Locke's response, it was typical Progressive Demoncat double speak. The problem of the Shrinking of the Surplus-OVERTAXATION, and how ALL AMERICANS deserve a TAX Break. Well, yes ALL TAX PAYING AMERICANS DESERVE a Tax Break, NOT ALL NON TAX PAYING AMERICANS! Everyone here KNOWS that ths is nothing else, other than a disguised TRANSFER of WEALTH!

Ted Kennedy is calling for a new vote: 'we voted three months ago! Things have channnnged' whines the wooly mammoth.

I am sure the dems do not want to have to vote on this again...they're too cowardly.

'Nu-cu-lar' bothered me until I remembered that Jimmy Carter said it too, and everyone ragged on him for it. I think it's probably southern. Just like westerners say 'calvary' instead of 'cavalry'.
Think of it as part of the dialect!
W's use of 'wonder-working power' and the references to God at the end of his speech were exceptional, a message to us that he is standing on the solid rock of faith.

#66 was watching a rerun of a Clinton SOTU, apparently.
