Berlin - Volkswagen was fined 1 billion euros ($1.18 billion) over diesel emissions cheating in what amounts to one of the highest ever fines imposed by German authorities against a company, public prosecutors said on Wednesday. The German fine follows a U.S. plea agreement from January 2017 when VW agreed to pay $4.3 billion to resolve criminal and civil penalties for installing illegal software in diesel engines to cheat strict U.S. anti-pollution tests. “Following thorough examination, Volkswagen AG accepted the fine and it will not lodge an appeal against it. Volkswagen AG, by doing so, admits its responsibility for

I´m just curious. Just who gets this money and what can they do with it? Does it go to Germany or the EU? (Do you think these are the same folks that fudge "climate change" numbers?)

I´ll bet VW has a lot of influence in Germany, which means it has influence in the EU.
I presume they are a big climate change company too, right?

Stupid.
They should get a medal for making cars that drive better and get better fuel economy.

Once we got to about the year 2000, refs need no more tightening.

No good deed goes unpunished. I can understand why US environmentalists shake down VW but now the Germans are doing the same. Do they not realize that the end game is not a cleaner environment but a primitive way of life? Environmentalists should be all forced to walk everywhere now before they impose it on all of us. The engineering failures working in the government can always raise standards so high that the talented engineers in the auto companies cannot meet them. This does not make the cars "dirty" because they are not cleaner than in nature. Electric cars are just as dirty as the plants that generate power. Only a tiny part of that is so called "clean" solar and wind energy. Ozone is produced in nature. Just produce more of it on an industrial scale in cities or in the exhaust pipe if you wish and this will destroy the NOx emissions. Problem solved - and with a diesel less fuel and Co2 as well. The best solution is to defund greedy environmentalists completly and subsidize the Auto industry. Take that and smoke it.

I´m surprised the German government was able to get as much as $1.2 billion after the 0bama regime shakedown of $4.3 billion.

This is nothing but a shakedown by the Enviro-Nazis. VW Diesels are some of the finest in the world, they just couldn´t pass the ridiculous emission standards setup by the EPA Clean Air Nazis. You can practically inhale the fumes out of a modern Diesel that you would die from in the 1960´s Diesels.

Died-in-the-wool Volkswagen family here since the early 60´s....many wonderful vehicles that lasted for literally many decades...and are, for that matter, still being driven!

Enviro-Nazis, indeed! Kind of ironic, isn´t it?

Considering German Engineers have been outstanding in many areas, I wouldn´t own a German car. Nearly 35 years I have owned Camry´s. Incredibly reliable and each one I replaced was better that the one before. Check the cost of repairs for a German car.

Charles Krauthammer made people understand their own thoughts. It was Charles who collated the various strands of Ronald Reagan’s foreign policy and codified them as the Reagan Doctrine in a Time Magazine essay in 1985. He did the same with the Bush Doctrine 16 years later—and his codification played a role in how Bush himself came to formulate his approach to the world following 9/11. And in 2009, Charles codified the Obama Doctrine as well, although not by that name, in a speech he turned into one of the great articles of our time, “Decline Is a Choice.” I was there when he delivered that speech and rushed up to him

The Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Hillary Clinton have a HUGE Weiner problem that is even bigger than we first realized. According to the recently released inspector general report, on September 28 and 29, 2016 the New York office of the FBI immediately reported to the Washington headquarters its discovery of, first, 141,000 and then 350,000 emails on the laptop of Anthony Weiner — also known as “Carlos Danger,” a now-convicted sex offender. Mr. Weiner is the husband of Hillary Clinton’s inseparable aide Huma Abedin. Now we know by October 4, the New York office had found 700,000 emails.

Throughout Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s massive report on the Hillary Clinton email investigation are lots of strange things. One of the weirdest is the extent to which the FBI went to make up words and phrases to disguise reality. An early draft of the 2016 FBI report on the email scandal was reportedly subjected to linguistic surgery to exonerate the former secretary of state, who at the time was the Democratic nominee for president. Clinton was originally found to be “grossly negligent” in using an illegal email server. That legalistic phrase is used by prosecutors to indict for violation of laws governing .

New York gubernatorial candidate and former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon on Thursday called U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “a terrorist organization” and called for its abolition, pitting progressive New Yorkers against Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Nixon made her remarks at a church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where an illegal immigrant is taking sanctuary after being threatened with deportation after she failed to show a driver’s license during a traffic stop by ICE agents. “ICE has strayed so far away from its mission. It is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into,

A Canadian television comedy writer was forced to apologize this week after he appeared to threaten Donald Trump Jr.’s 4-year-old daughter on Twitter. “Don’t worry, we’re coming for Chloe, too,” Pat Dussault tweeted Wednesday morning to the president’s eldest son. The tweet was deleted, but not before actor James Woods snapped a screenshot and notified the Secret Service. Mr. Trump Jr. retweeted both of Mr. James’ messages condemning Mr. Dussault. (Tweets) Mr. Dussault later posted an apology to Twitter, saying he let his emotions concerning President Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policy get the better of him. “I sincerely apologize to Donald Trump Jr.

Judicial Watch today released newly obtained internal IRS documents, including material revealing that Sen. John McCain’s former staff director and chief counsel on the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee, Henry Kerner, urged top IRS officials, including then-director of exempt organizations Lois Lerner, to “audit so many that it becomes financially ruinous.” Kerner was appointed by President Trump as Special Counsel for the United States Office of Special Counsel. The explosive exchange was contained in notes taken by IRS employees at an April 30, 2013, meeting between Kerner, Lerner, and other high-ranking IRS officials. Just ten days following the meeting, former

The Minnesota Vikings made history on Thursday. Vikings players, coaches and members of the LGBTQ community came together for a first of its kind inclusion summit held by an NFL team. The LGBTQ summit and fundraising event was held at the TCO Performance Center Auditorium in Eagan. It centered around bridging the gap between the LGBTQ community and sports. (snip) Kluwe´s hope is that the NFL and other sports leagues take notice, and it sparks conversations leading to more acceptance of the LGBTQ community in the athletic world.

Taxes: Whatever you think about the issue of taxing internet sales, the simple fact is that the Supreme Court has just guaranteed that people across the country will now be paying more in state taxes. It´s hard for us to see how this is good news. In its 5-4 decision on South Dakota v. Wayfair, the court overturned two previous rulings that prevented states from taxing sales of out-of-state companies. That meant a catalog company based in Maine didn´t have to navigate 45 state sales-tax laws to figure out how much each customer owed, and then remit that money to the

How´s this for sneaky? Sen. John McCain, not too long after seeking conservative and Republican votes in his failed 2008 bid for the presidency, went right after those same conservative voters without telling them, by egging on the IRS to ruin them. It´s the sort of political back-stabbing that defies belief, taking an active role in destroying the Tea Party, which was an authentic grassroots movement of local groups calling for smaller government. Former Fox News contributor George Will says voters must punish Republican “poodles” during the midterm elections to “quarantine” the president. An op-ed in Friday’s Washington Post by the long-time political pundit and conservative calls for voters to end the “carnage of Republican misrule” in Washington. Mr. Will claimed the “most telegenic example” of a need to oust Republicans exists with the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy regarding illegal immigrants along the U.S. southern border. “The Republican-controlled Congress, which waited for Trump to undo by unilateral decree the border folly they could have prevented by actually legislating, is an advertisement for the unimportance of
