The transformation of Kim Jong Un
The Week, by Marc Ambinder

Original Article

On Tuesday, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended their historic summit in Singapore with a handshake and the joint signing of a vague but important document. In said document, Trump agreed to provide security guarantees to North Korea. Kim recommitted himself to "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." Whether or not these agreements will hold remains to be seen. But another pertinent process to observe in the wake of this meeting is the loosening of Kim´s shadow self, and the unleashing onto the world of the political leader he wishes to be. Kim wants to transform into

It´s a no-brainer for Kim to give up a few fireworks that he can never use in exchange for bringing his country into the twenty-first century on American dollars.

FTA: How quickly will the world accept the brutality of Kim´s past actions?

American liberals have historically accepted the most brutal dictators of the world with open arms. Fidel Castro, Che Guevera, Bashar Asaad, Muamar Quadaffi, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin and many others were heroes to them. Because Kim was befriended by Trump may make a difference but, fortunately, the Left no longer matters.

Although Kim obviously likes the idea of hotels, condos and tourists coming to his impoverished country...Rush has stated that the greatest danger for Kim is assassination from his own countrymen who remember the way things used to be under Kim´s father and grandfather.

Ambinder produces an interesting speculation in this piece, but unless he has been secretly training as a psychiatrist while cranking out some very fine journalism, then speculation is all “The Transformation of Kim Jong Un” can be. Ambinder is right that many of the preconditions for fundamental psychic change are in place. However, he lacks evidence that the single most important element is there in Kim’s make-up: He has to want to change more than anything in the world.
It is demonstrably so that like in NOKO is wretched in ways that are hard to duplicate elsewhere. As brutal and devoid of hope as some of the African regimes are, they at least enjoy better weather in which to be downtrodden. But life in NOKO is not so bad if you’re Kim Jong Un. Plenty to eat and drink, concubines, loyal henchmen willing to commit murder on his behalf, and closets full of some very questionable fashions weave a rich tapestry of life in the North for dear leader.
Trump offers him better economic prospects for his citizens, a sounder security arrangement for his little corner of Asia, and a place at the table of leadership for Kim himself. Tidy package but I’m not sure it stacks up all that well versus concubines and murderous acolytes.
Kim has to want this deal very badly for it to work and he doesn’t seem quite desperate enough to undergo profound psychic change.

Assuming that Kim still wants to remain on this side of the ground, he will follow through on his end of the deal.

Kim spent two years in Switzerland while in school, generally formative years. He knows well what the modern world offers. As #2 points out, the greatest threat is internal. Dear Leader could have a "heart attack" tomorrow. Great funeral, televised around the globe, with great mourning on display. And then what?

Virtually all the reportage is speculative, much hooray (or boo) for Trump. Not to minimize his statesmanship, but this is a first step. As another President said often: Trust but verify. There is much ahead. The war isn´t over, and NorK nukes continue to exist.

Meanwhile, Kim is looking good, Gangnam Style...or maybe now it´s Pyongyang Style.

Totally agree #5.....and what #2 said about the possibility of assassination is very true.

Three of Kim Jung Un´s top generals have been fired (released, taken away, put in prison - I don´t know which). They were much older than he. The people who were with Kim in Singapore were all ´young´ people.

My speculation is that one of the conditions may have been to get rid of the "Old Guard" so to speak; those who were part of his dad´s regime. That would leave him freer to make a deal with the US.

Who wants to be the dictator of a poor, starving nation when there is a whole world out there in which to participate?

While that Trump and Un made what looks like a great deal, I´m still going to wait a see what the future happens. I still remember what NOKO has been doing for nearly 70 years and it´s in their lives. I don´t believe that that country can change overnight on how they can become a country that is going to join the rest of the world. I´ll wait an see.

Hurrah! There are fewer disabled and fewer cheats

Just over a year ago, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney was being raked over the coals for his budget blueprint. In addition to supposed cuts to the Meals on Wheels program (which weren’t really cuts), the document projected savings of $72.5 billion within Social Security’s two main programs for the disabled. Liberal journalists injected outrage into their reports and columns. Some denounced this modest frugality as President Trump’s “deceitful attack on the disabled” and called the justifications for the reforms "false claims." Others snarkily but accurately noted that the cuts “will hurt Trump counties,” which perhaps should have signaled that

Did you see the Rasmussen poll out Thursday on the media kerfuffle about illegal immigrant kids at the border? If you haven’t, here’s what it said… Most voters blame the parents of the separated children at the border for the latest illegal immigration crisis, not the federal government. When families are arrested and separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally, 54% of Likely U.S. Voters say the parents are more to blame for breaking the law. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 35% believe the federal government is more to blame for enforcing the

If you’ve eaten today, you should thank a farmer. If you regularly shop at your local grocery store or farmer’s market, then you should care about the stability and success of our nation’s farms and ranches. Across our country, more than 3 million producers operate farms that generate food for families around the world. As members of the House Agriculture Committee, we represent areas from California to New York, each of which rely heavily on our local farms that promote jobs and support countless workers and their families. Together, we supported this year’s farm bill, which strengthens programs important to the farmers

WASHINGTON — The Obama White House’s chief cyber official testified Wednesday that proposals he was developing to counter Russia’s attack on the U.S. presidential election were put on a “back burner” after he was ordered to “stand down” his efforts in the summer of 2016. The comments by Michael Daniel, who served as White House “cyber security coordinator” between 2012 and January of last year, provided his first public confirmation of a much-discussed passage in the book, “Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump,” co-written by this reporter and David Corn,

For the last few months, James Brien Comey, the FBI director fired by Donald Trump in the midst of the Russia investigation, has presented himself as the Last Honest Man as he toured the country selling books and taking potshots at the president. How self-righteous is Comey? In the midst of the Russia maelstrom, he posted to his Instagram account a photo of the Potomac River falls outside Washington, adding a biblical quote: “Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Now, justice is rolling in Comey’s direction, with the revelation that he is under investigation for

The anarchy and disorder dominating progressive cities across the West Coast recently hit a new low in Seattle. King County officials are looking to roll out a “safe injection van,” a legal venue at which addicts could shoot up illegal drugs unhindered and “safely.” The first of its kind in the United States, the van would manage to undermine further the rule of law while also doing little to help addicts. Seattle’s urban decay goes deeper, though, with skyrocketing rates of homelessness, an explosion in opioid usage and deaths, and spikes in violent crime. Seattle’s predicament is emblematic of the broader

It all really began with Sam Donaldson. Back in the days of Ronald Reagan, the brash and cantankerous reporter with the worst toupee in television history made his name by yelling at the president. He’d yell at him at White House events, on the South Lawn (where Reagan would pretend he couldn’t hear Donaldson over the chopper blades of Marine One), even in the Rose Garden. His aggressiveness (read: bad behavior) made Donaldson one of the first “star” reporters at the White House. (He was voted best television correspondent in 1986, ‘87, ‘88 and ‘89 by readers of the Washington Journalism

Judicial Watch today released newly obtained internal IRS documents, including material revealing that Sen. John McCain’s former staff director and chief counsel on the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee, Henry Kerner, urged top IRS officials, including then-director of exempt organizations Lois Lerner, to “audit so many that it becomes financially ruinous.” Kerner was appointed by President Trump as Special Counsel for the United States Office of Special Counsel. The explosive exchange was contained in notes taken by IRS employees at an April 30, 2013, meeting between Kerner, Lerner, and other high-ranking IRS officials. Just ten days following the meeting, former

Does someone from the Trump family, the Trump Cabinet, or even the Trump administration have to be assaulted or worse, killed, before we accept the fact that a growing number from the far-left have put a rhetorical bounty on their heads. If has-been actor Peter Fonda suggesting Barron Trump be "ripped from his mother´s arms and put in a cage with pedophiles" does not horrify you with the obscene brutality of its message, nothing ever will. From this cauldron of bubbling and putrid hate filled from the twisted minds of enraged liberal politicians, "journalists," entertainers, and academics, spews forth the dangerously

The latest cover of Time magazine criticizes President Trump´s tough border policy, by showing him looking down at a crying, two-year-old Honduran girl whose mother was detained after crossing the border. The photoshopped image is the latest ding against Trump and his zero tolerance policy, which led to the increased family separation of illegal immigrants. The cover is captioned, "Welcome to America." (Tweet/Video) On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order aimed at putting an end to the practice of separating families, after calling on Congress, specifically Democrats, several times to change the laws.

The Minnesota Vikings made history on Thursday. Vikings players, coaches and members of the LGBTQ community came together for a first of its kind inclusion summit held by an NFL team. The LGBTQ summit and fundraising event was held at the TCO Performance Center Auditorium in Eagan. It centered around bridging the gap between the LGBTQ community and sports. (snip) Kluwe´s hope is that the NFL and other sports leagues take notice, and it sparks conversations leading to more acceptance of the LGBTQ community in the athletic world.

Taxes: Whatever you think about the issue of taxing internet sales, the simple fact is that the Supreme Court has just guaranteed that people across the country will now be paying more in state taxes. It´s hard for us to see how this is good news. In its 5-4 decision on South Dakota v. Wayfair, the court overturned two previous rulings that prevented states from taxing sales of out-of-state companies. That meant a catalog company based in Maine didn´t have to navigate 45 state sales-tax laws to figure out how much each customer owed, and then remit that money to the

How´s this for sneaky? Sen. John McCain, not too long after seeking conservative and Republican votes in his failed 2008 bid for the presidency, went right after those same conservative voters without telling them, by egging on the IRS to ruin them. It´s the sort of political back-stabbing that defies belief, taking an active role in destroying the Tea Party, which was an authentic grassroots movement of local groups calling for smaller government. But sure enough, Judicial Watch has found McCain´s central role right there in the documents: Judicial Watch today released newly obtained internal IRS documents, including material revealing that Sen.
