Behind Seattle’s Amazon Tax: Seething
Tensions, Livid Neighbors, and Rising Rents

Bloomberg News, by Karen Weise

It was, as the local public radio station said, the day “Seattle Nice” died. On May 2, the residents of Seattle were hit with a one-two punch. For months, the city council had been debating a new tax on large employers to raise $75 million for new affordable housing and services for the homeless, whose growing population had burst out of shelters and into tents around the city. (Snip) Homeowners shouted down the council members and each other—decrying how growth and homeless encampments were encroaching into neighborhoods. Some opposed the tax, shivering at the thought of risking jobs at the

One point the author made in passing is that a part of the problem is the "opioid crisis and. the state’s meager mental health resources." Seattle is not the only place in the state that is being affected by this "enlightened" state´s stingy support of mental resources. In one case, two counties shared a single tiny crisis response office, and then they closed it because one particular politician thought a local hospital could handle matters more efficiently and bullied others to go along. That hospital has failed miserably, and the two counties are paying a high price for it.&

Provide the tools, supervision and materials, and let the homeless build their own homes. Maybe they would take pride of ownership and not destroy their homes, like most welfare recipients do to their government-furnished homes. They would learn skills, enabling them to get jobs and not be parasites on taxpayers.

Either that or give them a section of land for their tent city.

OP, You´d like to think so but, please look to Detroit and other shining examples. Those folks are so stuck in their ways, I have very little faith in things changing.

This aint a black, white, brown or yellow issue. It´s a mindset. Some have just swallowed whole the notion that more taxes and government will solve their problems. CONTRARY to ALL EVIDENCE.

FTA:"Normally, higher prices would induce more construction, but zoning laws prevent that," Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin Corp. wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.

His blog post was more informative than the Bloomberg article. I don´t agree with everything he wrote in that post but do agree that zoning regs are the big issue and it isn´t being addressed.

What you subsidize, you get more of. What you tax, you get less of. Thus, in the future fewer businesses will be supporting more homeless.

The homeless and random murders -
Two substantial problems in the USA today that are directly driven by the lack of enough, or in some cases, any, long term mental hospitals. There is a certain percentage of the population that are not mentally able to function in a free society. They will self medicate with alcohol and illegal, harmful drugs and a certain portion of them will get a knife or a gun and harm others.

The leftist idiots who closed down the previously existing state and local mental hospitals decades ago, did it (as usual) because they thought that they were smarter and "better" than previous generations. And, as usual, they were wrong - leftist are ALWAYS wrong.

Those millions need to be used to fund long term mental hospitals for the insane folks who can no longer be permitted to live under bridges and in camps along the margin of the cities.

Leftists are cruel fools. Bring back the "mental institutions". It will take money, but it is far more humane and better for society than not doing it.

Local builders were making affordable, low-cost housing back in 2014 and before. But in 2015, the same council passed a series of requirements that demanded the apartments be bigger, cutting in half the number of units that could be built per building, really. And of course, this increased the cost per unit to the renters.
Now, the council wants to pull the money to fix that from successful businesses under its jurisdiction.
In other words, let´s fund further incompetence, because you KNOW they won´t figure out how to best use the funds they gain from this tax.

Let Amazon stop building and/or get out of Seattle altogether, followed by its buddy Starbucks. The overwhelming vote by the city government to implement the tax is mind-boggling. It will never work, and it has not worked in the past; but these liberals refuse to see it. I don´t live anywhere near Washington state, but after reading Amazon´s statement on the city´s finances, it looks like they have misused the taxpayers´ money without much accountability, and now want to milk them for more in order to patch a problem of their own making. Hey, you want socialism? You got socialism.

I think it´s a good idea. It will make the street people flock to Seattle to take advantage of the great benefits and clear them off the streets of other cities. It will become "Bum Town USA" and plague the citizenry for their Liberalism, panhandling all over their business district and tonier neighborhoods, and ignite the exodus of large businesses, not that it will ever make them vote for conservative leadership.

I live in Shoreline, immediately north of Seattle, our southern border is their northern border. I grew up in the Ballard area, graduated from Ballard High School. Ballard does not need to be ´gentrified´. It WAS solidly middle-class with homes built early in the 20th century. Now those homes are being torn down and being replaced by huge 10-12 or more story condos and apartment houses. My husband´s family home still stands but is surrounded on both sides with huge apartment buildings. The district is now mostly hipsters, millennials, drug addicts and bums. (all with dogs)
The city council is probably the most radical, left-wing council in the country. They keep finding new ways to raise taxes. Not only this ´head-tax´ but they´re trying to put an income tax on Seattle residents. The mayor announced yesterday she wants to put tolls on streets in downtown. It´s never ending. There are taxes on sodas, bags, special taxes on ammo and guns. Apartment owners have to rent to the first person who applies, they can´t even do background check. Employers have a set of rules on how they make up work schedules. You absolutely cannot believe the insanity that´s going on in the city. And yet the citizens keep voting for these clowns. Yesterday, Albertson´s announced the closing of two of their grocery stores. Amazon has already raised Prime from $99 a year to $119. People don´t believe you when you tell them that the company isn´t going to pay any taxes, they will just raise the price on whatever it is they sell. The people end up paying the tax.

Re#15
Wholeheartedly agree.

"Corporations dont pay taxes, people do," makes a great slogan/bumper sticker, but fails to explain why. "We" the people have failed to adequately explain simple business theories to the lofows. I sent a letter to the RNC chairman several years ago pleading with him to start explaining these issues in the media. Im firmly convinced that if everyone actually understood how businesses operate, democrats would never win elections outside of Berkley.

Like clockwork, Washington has whipped itself into a frenzy over rumors of a possible retirement on the Supreme Court. All eyes are on Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81, who reportedly considered calling it quits last spring. As the court’s current term winds to a close, speculation about his plans has again swept the capital, with court watchers searching for clues. (Snip) But Ian Samuel, a Climenko fellow and lecturer on law at Harvard Law School, who clerked for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, said the small number of cases the court has granted could signal Kennedy is throwing in the towel.

California is poised to become the first state in the nation to offer full health coverage to undocumented adults even as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown by separating families at the border. (Snip) But at a time when Trump is already attempting to re-energize state Republican voters — he met with California conservatives at the White House last week to strategize against the state’s sanctuary policies — the initiative might be risky. For starters, it will be costly: The annual price tag to expand Medicaid benefits to poor adult immigrants without legal status is projected at $3 billion annually.

Starbucks will allow people to sit in its cafes and use its bathrooms - even if they don´t buy anything. The new policy, announced on Saturday, comes five weeks after two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia store after one asked to use the bathroom before he had made a purchase. Donte Robinson and his friend Rashon Nelson, both 23, had been waiting for a potential business partner to discuss real estate development when one of the men asked to use the bathroom and was knocked back. Minutes after the pair had sat down at the coffee shop, the manager called the police and had Robinson and Nelson arrested.

Washington- Stacey Abrams´ bid to become the first female African-American governor in America is the hottest ticket in Democrats´ shadow 2020 presidential primary. In Georgia´s Tuesday primary, Abrams, the former state House minority leader, faces former state Rep. Stacey Evans for the Democratic nomination in what will be a closely-watched governor´s race. Just ahead of the primary, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed Abrams, and California Sen. Kamala Harris visited Georgia to campaign for her. In January, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker was in Atlanta for events supporting Abrams.

Early in her address to graduating Yale students at Sunday´s Class Day, Hillary Clinton reached behind the lectern, pulled out a traditional Russian ushanka hat, and held it aloft. "I mean, if you can´t beat ´em, join ´em." she said as the audience laughed and applauded. The Russian hat gag, a nod to the student tradition of wearing extravagant headgear during Class Day, set the tone for a wide-ranging speech in which Clinton alternately cracked jokes about her loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and warned Yale´s Class of 2018 that "we are living through a full-fledged

As California hurtles toward its state primary June 5, it is obvious there´s a problem. Its open primary system — which sends the top two vote-getters to the general election, regardless of party affiliation — is not working as intended and risks throwing the midterm election into acrimony and confusion. This system is called a "jungle primary" for a reason: It is brutal and unpredictable. In three high-profile House races, there are so many candidates from the two major parties eating into one another´s support that the election results may end up owing more to chance than any discernible will
