Italy: The Political Laboratory
of the West

Italy has long been the political laboratory of the West, creating fascism and eurocommunism, and playing a major role in the creation of the European Union. Its inconclusive national elections on March 4th provide us with a hazy view of the near future: redefinition of traditional politics, and perhaps even of the world at large. The most significant event on election day in Italy came when a young woman, topless for the occasion, confronted 82-year old Silvio Berlusconi at his voting place and pronounced him an irrelevancy. I wonder whom she voted for, although we can certainly be confident it

Aah, yes, Italy.
It was 1960. I was in college ROTC. I lost the draw and had to do a paper on Italy´s political history since 1945.
What a mess!
On average the ruling party switched once a year.
It was very tiresome.
So the current turmoil is TRADITION!

I used to live in Napoli, many years ago, and learned to enjoy the anarchic traffic, their wonderful food, the magnificent Vesuvio and the ubiquitous Roman ruins.

It was clear to me that northern Italians and southern Italians were very different. I was shocked to see the myriad of hammer and sickle Communist Party poster slathered every where.
The Red Brigades were a real shock, too.

I hope that Italy is able to push these leftists out and start to let real free markets and capitalism fix their problems. I spent a week and a half there last year, and rediscovered some of the fondness for Italy, Italians and their history from years ago.

Best wishes, and grazie, for a lot of good memories.

What Qualifies as an
Unqualified Lesbian?
American Spectator, by Daniel J. Flynn    Original Article

Former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn labeled Cynthia Nixon an “unqualified lesbian” after the Sex and the City actress announced a primary challenge to Empire State governor Andrew Cuomo. What makes one an “unqualified lesbian”? Like sanction or cleave, “unqualified” works as its own antonym (or perhaps, to qualify a bit, its own near opposite). Did Quinn mean to call Nixon one unfit for the lesbian label or did she mean to celebrate her as a total, full-blooded lesbian? “Unqualified” strikes ears and eyes as a confusing qualifier. Nixon, on the one hand, drifted into the Sapphic passion at midlife

The facts about farmed salmon

A couple years ago, salmon passed tuna as the most popular fish in the United States. Our doctors have told us to eat more of it; our fitness and diet regimens have put it in heavy menu rotation. The problem is not all salmon is created equal. More than 90 percent of the fresh salmon eaten in this country comes from giant fish farms, and those farms have problems. Big ones. Here are the facts about America’s favorite fish that you should know but perhaps wish you didn’t. • Large-scale salmon farms in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Norway and Chile have

Science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson is one of the best-known names in a genre known for looking forward. However, not all writers in the genre look to the future for their ideas -- plenty are obsessed with moving backwards, from liberty back to tyranny. Robinson recently penned an op-ed in The Guardian that favors removing humans from most of the world, forcefully herding us all into cities. "The tendency of people to move to cities, either out of desire or perceived necessity, creates a great opportunity. If we managed urbanisation properly, we could nearly remove ourselves from a considerable percentage of

The headline to a Sunday Los Angeles Times story is a muffled scream of disappointment, the lamentation of a child whom Santa Claus has too often disappointed: “If D.A. Jackie Lacey Won´t Charge the LAPD Officer Who Shot Brendon Glenn, Some Ask: When Would She Prosecute?” The story ran under the bylines of three writers -- Cindy Chang, Kate Mather, and Marisa Gerber -- who collectively seem aghast that a now-former Los Angeles Police Department officer will not face prosecution for the May 2015 shooting death of a man in Venice, a beachside area on L.A.’s west side. “If there was

As an almost-lifelong Hoosier, I´m proud to watch Mike Pence live his life a heartbeat away from the presidency. I was taken aback when Trump picked him, but if they´d flipped the ticket, I would´ve gladly voted Pence/Trump. Over the past year, Pence has won me over by showing a more presidential comportment than the actual president. As far as I´m concerned, Pence will make a fine POTUS in 4-8 years. And a lot of liberals seem to agree that it´s a done deal, because they can´t stop shrieking about how awful he is. We saw it at the Winter Olympics,

TAMPA — A veteran circus acrobat fell to his death Saturday during what he told fans was a new routine, one he was performing for the first time. "After so much work and training and staging, our straps duo act is finally in the show tonight. It’s time to go for it," Yann Arnaud, who has been with Cirque du Soleil for 15 years, wrote Saturday on Instagram. But whether it’s the first time or the hundredth time, whether they fall from great heights or lesser ones, whether it’s concrete down below or a safety net, the risk is all the same,

Investigators: Educator Craig Butz
at fault in fatal boat crash

Investigators have determined that Pepin Academies executive director Craig Butz was at fault in the Sept. 23 boating accident that took his life. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigators said the crash was caused by Butz through "operator inexperience and inattention," according to a Jan. 16 accident report. Alcohol was also a contributing factor, the report said, as Butz’s blood-alcohol level was 0.156, which is almost twice the level at which Florida law presumes a driver is impaired. Butz and his family were staying at a house on Clearwater Beach the weekend of the accident, the report said. At about 4:30

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday told an audience at the University of Miami that he would have "beat the hell out" of President Trump in high school for comments he has made about women. "A guy who ended up becoming our national leader said, ´I can grab a woman anywhere and she likes it,´" Biden said, according to ABC News. "They asked me if I´d like to debate this gentleman, and I said, ´No.´ I said, ´If we were in high school, I´d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.´" The rally in

Fully half of registered voters surveyed in a new poll say they´re ´embarrassed´ to have Donald Trump as president. Just three in 10 are ´proud.´ Fifty-five per cent believe the commander-in-chief does not have ´a sense of decency.´ Fifty-seven percent told pollsters the president is ´not honest.´ And a whopping 67 per cent – more than 2 out of every 3 voters – feel he´s a poor role model for children. The unmistakably dour results were released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Hillary Clinton continues to attack President Trump while abroad, this time during an interview with a Dutch news network. During the interview, which took place on March 13, Clinton alleged that Trump is undermining the presidency in exchange for personal and familial gain. “He has undermined the office and used it to enrich himself and his family,” Clinton said. “Disregarded laws, ethical standards.” “He’s crossed into a territory of behavior and actions that are unpredictable, that are erratic, that are undermining the stability of the global order,” she continued. Clinton came under fire last week during a trip to India when she

James Kallstrom is no joke. With nearly thirty years in the FBI, several of them as the Assistant Director, Kallstrom knows how the agency functions far more than most. So when he says there was a plot to protect Hillary Clinton from prosecution and to illegally influence the 2016 Election people should pay attention. Kallstrom goes on to call the entirety of the FBI investigation against Donald Trump completely phony. Maria Bartiromo’s own take appears very much to compliment Mr. Kallstrom’s assertions. The Deep State shenanigans run very deep and in 2016 are linked to the Obama White House. Barack Obama

Police in Glendale, Wis., are currently seeking the public’s help in identifying an irate McDonald’s customer who assaulted a teenage employee after receiving the wrong breakfast order. The suspect and a friend reportedly pulled up to the drive-thru of the McDonald’s just before 11 a.m. on March 18, where they placed an order for a breakfast sandwich with bacon, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But upon receiving a breakfast sandwich with sausage instead, the woman became angry. “What the [expletive] is this? A retired United States Army lieutenant colonel and Fox News contributor quit Tuesday and denounced the network and President Donald Trump in an email to colleagues. "Fox has degenerated from providing a legitimate and much-needed outlet for conservative voices to a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration," wrote Ralph Peters, a Fox News "strategic analyst." "Over my decade with Fox, I long was proud of the association. Now I am ashamed," he wrote.

President Trump says he didn´t collude with Russia in 2016, promising something to a foreign country in exchange for his installation as president. That seems increasingly likely to prove true. Where they do not spring from simple malignancy, critics’ arguments that Trump used Russian intervention to win the election are mostly an excuse to avoid the plain truth that Hillary Clinton deservedly lost because she was an awful candidate. And the country is better for that result. We aren’t persuaded, either, that the Russians’ paltry $100,000 in Facebook spending had anything to do with Trump’s win, given that very little of it
