NY’s futile fight against
illegal cigarettes

State authorities set a record in 2017 by seizing $6.6 million worth of illegal tobacco products, a $1 million jump over 2016. The 2016 seizures, in turn, marked a increase from the year before. Indeed, for each of the past three years, the state has steadily boosted inspections — and wound up grabbing more illegal products. (Snip) Illegal cigs today actually outnumber legal ones, making up 57 percent of the market. Why? Rising tobacco taxes, which have soared 190 percent since then. State and local cig taxes ($5.85 a pack, in total) are a powerful incentive for crooks: If they can get

Comments:
Easy ventures like cigarette smuggling are known avenues of funding for terrorist groups and foolishly high taxes all but guarantee such cheating, but the politicians see only one solution: more taxes.

I have seen many a car with out of states license plates stop at the 4 easy in easy out convensnce stores....3-4 passengers each go in, buy 3 cartons and place them in the trunk. Then on to the next store. I can only assume they did this from Va to NY. Big money.

I wish all the best to the bootleggers. Our nation has a long and proud history of protesting unjust taxes by avoiding them and its nice to see that´s still true.
The government is not and never has been your friend. All you are really doing is electing your own mugger.

There are no "Black Markets".

There are only Markets.

Note: The Marxists have attempted to turn the
"Market-Place of Ideas" (The University) into a
"Black Market". See how that works ?

I hope to live long enough to see the Universities purged of their fetid, rotting, craven Marxism.

It´s the only logical outcome. Same thing is going to happen in all the Weed states. I remember seeing a recent article about Colorado residents bemoaning the high price of legal pot.

$5.85 per pack would work better than Chantix(sp) or the patch, etc.
Nothing illegal could be a good thing.

Tax the bejeebers out of cigarettes to stop smoking but pretty much leave alcohol alone. Answer me a question:

Would you rather see a 21 year old get into his car with a cigarette dangling from his lips or:

A 21 year old climbing into his car while fall-down drunk?

I see smoking as long term suicide...Drunk driving as a murder in progress.

They almost had another Indian war about 10-15 year ago over cigs.
There is an Indian reservation which borders Canada, and the Indians were getting untaxed cigs from Canada and smuggling them all over the state. The police nearly started a war to stop it, but at the last minute, cooler heads prevailed.

Over tax something and people WILL smuggle it. Not ever going to change.

A former colleague got very wealthy in the Soviet Union with "black market goods". When I asked him what he sold, I was surprise when he said, "candy, gum mostly".

Candy and gum were very limited in soviet times, so he made it and sold it, became extremely wealthy and then legally emigrated to the USA.

Black markets provide goods that people want and the government doesn´t want them to have. Other than deadly and addictive drugs, mostly they are not a problem.

FTA: "State and local cig taxes ($5.85 a pack, in total) are a powerful incentive for crooks". Oh yes, and the government are the crooks. This was never about health, it´s about money and control. The war on cigarettes was a proving ground for the power of propaganda and demonizing certain segments of the population. Now that we have government involved in "health care", your choices (obesity, for example) will determine whether or not you are worthy of treatment. The NHS in the UK is already refusing treatment to smokers and the obese. Think they´ll stop there? Think again.

I no longer smoke, and one of the reasons I quit is to annoy the liberals who were taking my "tobacco settlement" taxes, that were supposed to pay for my healthcare, and diverting it to pay for the early education of criminal alien children.

A friend of mine was on the medical marijuana program, but quit because the cost to buy it legally online was 2-4 times what he could buy it on the street. Why involve government and pay their salaries with something that is none of their business?

Over taxation is supposed to be unconstitutional. Isn´t this what the famous "Boston Tea Party" was all about? It is nothing but confiscation when it reaches this exorbitant level. That is why the liquor taxes were ultimately limited- because any higher and bootlegging becomes profitable. We had a friend who lived in Mass. who was a chain smoker. She was telling us it was over a hundred bucks to buy a carton of smokes in her state. She was going through a carton and a half a week! We used to buy cigs here and send them to her for birthday and Xmas. At the time they were about $35.00 (now about $50.00) a carton here. Anytime you have such a huge disparity in prices across state lines, you can bet people are going to make some bucks on that. If someone lived in a huge welfare apartment complex, smugglers would be on every floor. Remember, cigarettes are not supposed to be purchased with EBT cards. So, Miamay would go to the "Corner´ Quickie Store, sell EBT for 50 cents on the dolla, go home and buy cigs from "travelin´"Jasmine next door for $75.00- and to Hell with that state price of $113.00 a carton- right? Cools all the way, Bay-bee!

What part of this did the Democrats running the state not understand or expect?

All you need is a U-haul truck and enough gas to make it down and back to Kentucky for $thousands in profit. Sure beats the Kramer/Newman scheme for bottle deposits.

Starbucks may have appeased progressives with its social-justice workshops and open-bathroom policy, but such moves have failed to caffeinate the company’s bottom line. The coffee giant’s stock took a tumble Wednesday after CEO Kevin Johnson announced that Starbucks would close 150 company-owned stores next year instead of the expected 50, with an emphasis on underperforming shops in densely populated urban areas, and lowered growth projections. Women will soon be getting their place among the city’s overwhelmingly male statues and monuments. Officials launched a push Wednesday to put up a monument marking women’s contributions to the city — and are asking the public to nominate women they’d like to see honored. “This is the day we finally start putting women where they belong — on pedestals,” said deputy mayor Alicia Glen, who joined Mayor de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, to make the announcement at Bryant Park — a rare spot that already has two monuments to women. The city has committed to commission and pay for

Three U.S. airlines said Wednesday they don’t want the government to use them to assist in some parts of immigration enforcement, in the latest protest to the family separation situation on the border. American, United and Frontier airlines, which have contracts with Homeland Security to fly people in immigration detention, said they have no idea if they are being used for the purpose — but lodged their objections anyway. “We have no desire to be associated with separating families, or worse, to profit from it. We have every expectation the government will comply with our request, and we thank them

The Trump administration’s decision to house children separated from their parents at the southern border in temporary “tent cities” is not only shameful, it’s expensive. It costs three-times as much per person to keep kids at the temporary facilities than it would to allow them to stay with their parents in detention centers, according to a report Wednesday. Housing a child or teenager in one of the newly-constructed tents costs about $775-a-night, officials with the Department of Health and Human Services told NBC News. It costs only $256 per person per night to hold children in a permanent facility like

When thousands descended upon Seaside Park for a meet-up organizers promised would be "fire," officials were surprised. And then they were overwhelmed. The meet-up, spread as a flier on social media accounts without any notice to officials, left police and first responders scrambling to account for the chaos of an estimated 15,000 additional beach-goers (yes, that´s on top of the usual crowds for a busy summer Saturday). Some stormed past a single officer along the boardwalk, skirting beach fees, and a handful ended up in brawls caught on camera, which eventually elevated the underground meet-up to the national news stage.

Urine trouble now. FDNY fire marshals arrested a squatter who sparked a massive blaze in Staten Island, urinated on the flames in an attempt to put out the fire, then ran off without telling anyone when that plan failed, sources and officials said Tuesday. Hector Meza, 40, was staying inside a building on Stuyvesant Place near Wall St. in St. George when he accidentally knocked over a candle about 5:15 p.m. on June 6, according to authorities. The flames spread and grew to a three-alarm inferno that ripped through several buildings on the commercial block. Meza bolted and never alerted
