U.S. airlines American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) and Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) said on Tuesday that they would give their employees a $1,000 bonus in light of the recent U.S. tax bill. The airlines join a host of other companies such as AT&T (T.N), Boeing Co (BA.N) and Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) promising to pay bonuses or invest more in training after the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years, which cuts the corporate tax rate. American Airlines will distribute the bonus to each team member, excluding officers, at its mainline and wholly owned regional carriers,

intelligent in Gallup poll

A new poll from Gallup finds those surveyed give President Trump high ratings on his intelligence but lower ones for his ability to work with both sides of the political aisle. Fifty-eight percent of Americans surveyed said they would characterize Trump as intelligent, the Gallup poll found, while 40 percent said they would not characterize him as intelligence. Gallup said it has not posed the question on intelligence to U.S. voters frequently enough with past presidents to give enough historical context. However, the polling giant asked a similar question in the 1990s, regarding former Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

Toward the end of his speech to Nevada Republicans on Saturday, President Trump issued a warning: Democrats were working to abolish Immigration and Customs and Enforcement, or ICE. “They want to get rid of ICE!” the president said. “Our ICE people are so tough. They’re so much tougher than the MS-13 people.” On Sunday morning, CNN’s Jake Tapper put the question to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.): Did the senator, a democratic socialist and 2016 presidential candidate, the most prominent left-wing politician in the country, want to abolish ICE? “I think what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration

A teenage boy has been reported missing from a care facility in Brownsville, Texas, a police official said Sunday. Brownsville Detective J.J. Treviño said police officers were called to the Southwest Key Casa Padre location after reports of a missing 15-year-old boy who ran away from the facility, the largest migrant children´s center in the United States. Jeff Eller, spokesman for the nonprofit Southwest Key Programs, which runs the facility, confirmed that a teenage boy left the center on Saturday and that facility officials called local law enforcement. An official with US Health & Human Services confirmed a boy ran

DENVER — Jared Polis, a leading Democratic candidate for Colorado governor, walked into the home of a prominent marijuana entrepreneur for a campaign event recently, wearing a suit and bright blue sneakers. He circled a room of voters, wound his way past the margarita machine and then fired off his vision for Colorado. Single-payer health care. An all-renewable electric grid. State-funded full-day preschool. The crowd showered him with applause. “Support the man,” said a host, Scott Durrah, 53, “because we really need him.” Colorado, one of the purplest states in the nation, has seen dramatic social and economic change in

In the latest CBS News Battleground Tracker poll, Arizona voters weighed in on their state´s U.S. senators, and each got more negative than positive views. Partisanship shapes opinion, but not in the way we typically see in politics today. GOP Sen. John McCain gets his highest favorable rating from Arizona Democrats of all partisan groups -- 62 percent view him favorably. It´s voters in his own party who give McCain his most negative ratings -- nearly 7 in 10 view him unfavorably. (Chart) President Trump has been critical of McCain, particularly on the senator´s vote against the Republican health care

Chicago - A division of the American Library Association has voted to remove the name of Laura Ingalls Wilder from a major children’s book award, over concerns about how the author portrayed African Americans and Native Americans. The board of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) made the unanimous decision to change the name on Saturday, at a meeting in New Orleans. The name of the prize was changed from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal to the Children’s Literature Legacy Award. The association said Wilder “includes expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC’s core values”. The first award

Stephanie Wilkinson was at home Friday evening — nearly 200 miles from the White House — when the choice presented itself. Her phone rang about 8 p.m. It was the chef at the Red Hen, the tiny farm-to-table restaurant that she co-owned just off Main Street in Lexington, Va. Sarah Huckabee Sanders had just walked in and sat down, the chef informed her. “He said the staff is a little concerned. What should we do?” Wilkinson told The Washington Post. “I said I’d be down to see if it’s true.” It seemed unlikely to her that President Trump’s press secretary

Saturday on MSNBC, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) suggested people harassing, and protesting members of the administration of President Donald Trump at stores, restaurants, and gas stations was the new reality for the United States of America. Waters was referencing White House press secretary Sarah Sanders being asked to leave a Red Hen restaurant in Virginia this weekend. Waters said, “I have no sympathy for these people that are in this administration who know it’s wrong for what they’re doing on so many fronts. They tend to not want to confront this president or even leave, but they know what they’re doing

President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday morning that the US should deport immigrants who enter the US illegally with no legal process. Trump said once "somebody comes in" the country, they should be removed with "no Judges or Court Cases" — a move that would violate the long-established legal precedent for immigrants´ rights to due process. (Snip) The US Constitution´s Fifth Amendment guarantees the right to "due process of law" in criminal proceedings. In 1953, the Supreme Court clarified this right extended to non-US citizens. The boycott-Trump movement has resurged. Shannon Coulter, a brand and digital strategist, started the #GrabYourWallet hashtag in October 2016 to encourage people seeking a way to take concrete action against Donald Trump to boycott companies — large and small — that do business with his family. As a result, brands such as Nordstrom, Jet.com, and Gilt dropped Ivanka Trump´s fashion line last year. While Coulter has remained steadfast in her quest to encourage the other 62 retailers, nonprofits, and even a movie produced by Harvey Weinstein to ditch Trump products, the issue has peaked once more among consumers and

The Chronicle receives a deluge of email every day, but one message sent to the news desk on a Saturday evening in April was particularly memorable. “There is a suitcase full of human s— on the corner of Isis and 13th,” the email read. “Last night, I had to threaten violence to a man smoking crystal meth on my front porch.
