From One Frenzy to the Next
American Greatness, by Victor Davis Hanson

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 11/14/2017 6:24:12 AM

America is in another of its Salem moments. Frenzy is almost a living, breathing monster. It moves from host to host, fueled by rumor, gossip, and self-righteous furor. The Greeks knew well of the transitory nature of these mass panics. They claimed such fits were inspired by the Maniae, the three daughters of Night who were the goddesses of insanity, madness, and crazed frenzy. We’ve seen all three of them in action throughout the past year. Collusion Everywhere and Nowhere For about six months, cable news shows, the internet, and the major newspapers ginned up the charge of “Russian collusion”—as

Comments:
Hanson hits every base with such subheadings as "Sages in Helmets and Pads”. “The Statue Busters”, “From Harvey to Everyone”.

Another great VDH read.

So very true. Love the comment that the statue busters have neither the education nor the ethics to differentiate the good from the bad.

Of course, I blame 24 hour round the clock exploitative news agencies for some of the frenzy. "The Mob," as it was known in the days of Washington and Madison, is easy to exploit.

One of the best articles I have read in a long time. Hanson connects dots that most of us would have thought had no connection at all. He points out how the selfish and the self-righteous fire up public frenzies fueled by the 24/7 news cycle and social media. Like the Salem Witch Trials, saner heads eventually prevail, but not before a lot of damage has been done and a lot of lives have been ruined. Today it´s The Sexual Assault hysteria. Now that Gloria Allred has reared her greedy head sniffing around for a big payday, this has probably reached its peak and will eventually fade away, But something else will be sure to replace it.

The mob and how easily it´s ignorance can be exploited is why the Electoral College is so essential to our continued viability as a nation.
The Heartland is the great counterbalance to the coastal mobs.

Those four inventions may turn out to be the worst that mankind has produced and may well destroy us in the end.

Doctor Hansen nails it as usual. I love his writing style. Simple and to the point.

The Mrs. and I no longer watch the news for precisely this reason. It just moves from one frenzy to the next and whatever the current one is it is covered 24-7 non-stop. Who cares if there was a coup in the Middle East or a major earthquake in Asia or any other news anywhere else in the world. All you will hear about is Harvey Weinstein passed gas this morning.

We will find out what is happening from other sources.
Over and out.

A good read, but more a description of symptoms than a prescription for cure.

When VDH writes, "It is, after all, the credo of Vladimir Putin to be mostly against what America is mostly for." he might have added that this is also a perfect description of the modern Democrat Party.

I wish the writer had not included Senator McCarthy in his list frenzies because, while McCarthy may have been rude and crude, history has shown that he was also mostly right.

I´m a VDH fan. Have been for years...but...

In this case his academic / clinical style of prose combined with an omniscient POV suggests that "Everyone does it." I can appreciate his ´Reserve´ and his reluctance to accuse any particular party or individual of instigating this criminal nonsense but the facts on the ground show that the overwhelming majority of these "Manias" were ginned up by the Left and designed to accrue to the political benefit of the Left. The Weinstein affair surely backfired on Hollyweird but it may be the only case which burst from cover due to it´s own import and critical mass.

VDH is a keen observer but in this case his brilliant verbal skills are a bit too forgiving for my taste and perhaps too cute by half.

Creating "Mania" is a key component to our media industry. It doesn´t matter the subject - take the weather. It is a revenue driver for your local broadcast TV stations. They draw eyeballs by teasing, oftentimes with misdirection, such as "The ´s-word´ is in the forecast tonight"...only to hype the thought of snow when the s-word is "sunny". You looked! Flurries become possible superstorms in the forecast, although modified by qualifiers like maybe or if conditions are right.

Another Mania VDH did not mention is the Keurig "boycott" over its Hannity advertising pull. Yes, it qualifies. Everybody does it.

Mania is all around us. Stop a minute and count the ways.

I´m with #9 in that I think Hanson was mute on one point. The common thread in these "hysterias" is that they were all kindled and stoked by the Left, with malice aforethought, to undermine the rule of law and trust in this country.

I am reminded of the following quote from a bygone era:

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

H. L. Mencken

There have been constant rumors that they are more than just good friends since they went on vacation to Mexico last month. And Caitlyn Jenner, 68, and gal pal Sophia Hutchins, 21, looked as though they had plenty to smile about as they enjoyed a shopping trip in Calabasas, California, on Monday on their second outing in 24 hours. The two looked happy in each other´s company as they giggled away, after denying they are romantically involved. Sophia, a senior at Malibu´s Pepperdine University, looked equally chic in a white sweater and black wrap skirt with cream sandals with perilously high block

In some ways, the Democrats are on a roll. First, they beat expectations by easily winning the Virginia governorship earlier this month and nearly taking over the state legislature’s lower house. Now they have a shot at claiming a much more improbable prize: a US Senate seat in a special election Dec. 12 in deep-red Alabama, (Snip) But Democrats are hardly resting easy. The Clintons have roared back into the headlines, with some in the party now reevaluating former President Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades and Hillary Clinton’s controversial defense of her husband. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon on Monday called recently published accusations of sexual harassment against Assemblyman Raul Bocanegra “extremely disturbing,” and said he would move to expel Bocanegra should an investigation affirm the allegations. Bocanegra (D-Pacoima) announced Monday that he would resign effective Sept. 1, 2018, citing “persistent rumors and speculation” regarding sexual harassment claims. The Times published a story soon after detailing allegations from six women who said they faced unwanted sexual advances or unwelcome communication from Bocanegra. The alleged incidents were said to have occurred when Bocanegra, 46, was a legislative staffer, a candidate and a legislator. Rendon (D-Paramount) said in a

Eight women have told The Washington Post that longtime television host Charlie Rose made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas. The women were employees or aspired to work for Rose at the “Charlie Rose” show from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011. They ranged in age from 21 to 37 at the time of the alleged encounters. Rose, 75, whose show airs on PBS, also co-hosts “CBS This Morning” and is a contributing correspondent for “60 Minutes.” There are striking commonalities in the

Charlie Rose has been accused of making unwanted sexual advances towards eight women in a blistering new expose published by The Washington Post. Among the claims being made by the women are that Rose would grope their breasts, buttocks and genitals without their consent, make lewd telephone calls, and walk around naked in their presence without warning. The women who have come forward with these claims about Rose, 75, were all between the ages of 21 and 37 at the time of the alleged misconduct.
