Today began with the expectation that it would the the day on which the State rested it’s case. That proved true, and it was. It was also among the most bizarre (Snip) The first State witness of the day was, as anticipated Sybrina Fulton. She had two missions for her appearance: (1) identify the screamer in the background of the Jenna Lauer 911 recording as her son, Trayvon Martin; and (2) avoid saying anything nice about the reputation or character of her son that would open the door to the defense introducing into evidence Martin’s history of violence
Comments: Then came half-brother Javharis Fulton, her eldest son. He ended up conflicting with his own story in a CBS interview several weeks after the incident. The most bizarre was medical examiner Dr. Bao. There are no words....except chaos and incompetence.
As expected Judge Nelson denied the request for Judgement of Acquittal, placing the burden on the jury rather than herself to determine the outcome. Practically speaking, this means any rioting is postponed for a few days. So far the prosecution has basically proved that events transpired exactly as Zimmerman said.
Judge Nelson unwittingly gave the defense a gift when she demanded (Branca´s word) that the defense begin its case at 5PM. (For a good laugh, read Branca´s comment on that weird act.) The end result was that the jury went off for the weekend with the two scream identifications as Zimmerman in their most recent memory
I like Branca´s writing, so will extract this bit which is quite good:
One aside before I fully wrap this up. To me, the biggest take home message of the day was not the scream identification of either the Martin or Zimmerman family, but rather the mid-trial motions and response by the State. Mantei’s web of half-truths and claims utterly unsupported by any evidence whatever showed the State was as hungry for George Zimmerman’s hide as they must have been when first handed the political prosecution of their careers. They would see George Zimmerman do life in prison, whether warranted by the evidence or not, or they would die in the effort. Given the almost complete lack of direct evidence, and the need to wildly interpret the available circumstantial evidence–and particularly following the utter debacle that was the Dr. Bao testimony–one could only imagine that their fervor would have diminished. Not so.
O´Mara and West are ready to face them down. If you have time, do read this article. It is especially good.
PS Spoiler: He recommends medical examiner Dr. Bao consider other employment.
I don´t see where the state made any of the needed points. They didn´t show Zimmerman was depraved or had evil intent, just the opposite. They showed no proof he started the confrontation, in fact they showed Trayvon had every opportunity to avoid conflict and instead confronted it. This case should have been tossed. But it isn´t a legal trial it´s a political trial. In a political trial Zimmerman has to prove his innocence. It stinks.
"missions for her appearance: (2) avoid saying anything nice about the reputation or character of her son that would open the door to the defense introducing into evidence Martin’s history of violence"
It must have taken a Herculean effort for Sybrina Fulton to resist all instincts and impulses to tell the jury how her baby was a good, sweet boy who always helped his Mama.
It would not be surprising if Obama has instructed Holder and his fellow racists at DoJ to influence Judge Nelson. A DoJ official from the Civil Rights unit would casually ask her whether she knows of any judges who might want a federal judicial appointment. Someone with racial sensitivity and the ability to handle high profile cases. Or, a position within the new DoJ regional office that just happens to be close to her home. Having aggressively used the IRS and FBI to subvert the Tea Party, Obama and Holder would absolutely no qualms at "judge tampering" to convict GZ. Same tampering may also apply to the 6 jurors. "How would you like us to forgive that large tax claim against your husband or your parents´ estate?"
Re: #7 - No need for tampering. The attorney general probably has the indictment for civil rights violations teed up, lacking only the date for the paperwork, ready to rush to their already shopped federal judge for signature.
LUNENBURG, Mass. —Investigators say the mother of a Lunenburg teen whose home had racist graffiti sprayed on it last month is a "strong suspect" in the case. According to the search warrant, Isaac Phillip´s mother, Andrea Brazier, replied "OK" when an FBI agent said she was the one who spray painted graffiti on the house. Watch Report "Most of the leads we have followed up throughout the investigation have led back towards the house," said Lunenburg police Lt. Michael Luth. When asked if police considered Brazier a strong suspect, Luth responded, "I would." Court documents also claim Brazier made false statements and then asked
The fight for Christmas took a hit this week when politics bigfooted a troupe of adorable little ballet dancers performing “The Nutcracker.” MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is scheduled to interview President Obama on Thursday night at American University as part of the “Hardball College Tour.” MSNBC approached AU to host the chat, and officials jumped at the chance for a free, hour-long commercial for the university and its students. But the interview, announced Tuesday morning, abruptly kicked the Ballet Petite’s rehearsals of”The Nutcracker” out of AU’s Greenberg Theatre. That didn’t sit well with the ballet school’s staff, teachers and parents who
Well, it’s not like there’s any danger of this stuff crossing the porous border into the US… Tepojaco (Mexico) (AFP) – Mexican authorities scrambled Wednesday to find a truck containing “extremely dangerous” radioactive material used in medical treatment that was stolen by two gunmen two days ago, officials said. The white Volkswagen Worker truck was transporting a teletherapy device containing cobalt-60 when it was stolen Monday in the central Hidalgo state town of Tepojaco, near Mexico City, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. (Snip)So they found the container, just not the incredibly dangerous material that was in it. The
A fourth student at the University of California Santa Barbara has come down with a strain of meningitis similar to the one that sickened eight Princeton University students in New Jersey, authorities said. The California students began getting sick about three weeks ago, according to a university statement. One student had to have both legs amputated, ABC News has learned. "He´s from my hometown. I hope he is doing well," said David Burkow, another student. "It´s just kind of scary because there is a constant fear." The California school has suspended social events, including sorority and fraternity parties, to avoid
With a ruling by a federal judge on Tuesday that Detroit is eligible to enter bankruptcy, the fate of the city’s art collection — one of the finest in the country — now moves front and center in the legal battle over the city’s future. But the judge, Steven W. Rhodes, questioned for the first time the push by some of the city’s largest creditors to sell paintings and sculpture from the Detroit Institute of Arts, a sale that could generate hundreds of millions of dollars or more. While he did not say specifically that the art should be spared,
WASHINGTON – The National Transportation Safety Board has removed the Association of Commuter Rail Employees as a participant in its investigation into the December 1 fatal derailment of the Metro-North passenger train in the Bronx that killed four people. Organizations designated as parties to investigations sign an agreement to abide by NTSB rules during an investigation, but on Tuesday, the chairman of the union, Anthony Bottalico, spoke to the media and discussed what he thought happened during the derailment and engineer William Rockefeller. “While we value the technical expertise that groups like ACRE can provide during the course of an investigation, it
A truck carrying potentially "extremely dangerous" radioactive material has been stolen in Mexico, the UN atomic watchdog said Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency said the truck was carrying cobalt-60, used for radiotherapy treatment to combat cancer. An IAEA statement Wednesday said the truck was stolen Monday while taking the material to a radioactive waste storage center from the northern city of Tijuana. The IAEA said the heist occurred in Tepojaco, a town near Mexico City, and describes the load as `´extremely dangerous" if damaged or removed from its protective shielding. It said Mexican authorities are searching for the material. The statement provided
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter.
