Trucker Bumps I-5 Bridge,

Mt. Vernon, Wash. - The trucker was hauling a load of drilling equipment when his load bumped against the steel framework over an Interstate 5 bridge. He looked in his rearview mirror and watched in horror as the span collapsed into the water behind him. Two vehicles fell into the icy Skagit River. Amazingly, nobody was killed. The three people who fell into the water escaped with only minor injuries. Officials are trying to find out whether the spectacular collapse of a bridge on one of the West's most important roadways was a fluke — or a sign of a bigger problem with thousands of

Comments:
A description of the accident that closed a major artery between Washington state and Canada made interesting by the Governor´s comments. He estimates that it will be ´weeks´ if not ´months´ to repair of replace the bridge span. And, no one challenges such an admission of an absolute sclerotic government. The SeeBees in WWII could build a bridge in a day, and airfield in a week. All it requires is the will and a can do spirit. What America use to have naturally.

There was a tanker fire a few weeks ago at a major intersection in Harrisburg, PA, where 81 and 22/322 intersect. Happened on the middle deck of a three tier deck intersection.

PDOT said it will be 2 - 3 months before it´s opened. And I´ll believe that when it happens but I´m betting closer to a year per what OP said.

I should think bridges withstand vehicle crashes every day but they´re going to get a fall guy.

The SeeBees didn´t need environmental studies nor RFPs for contractors.

The truck was hauling drilling equipment. It´s surprising the AP headline was not "Fracking Causes Bridge Collapse".

The truck driver had a proper permit. He even hired local escorts to help navigate the route. The State knew the route he was taking and the size of the load. They collected their permit fees, but didn´t go over the route and determine the bridge might have clearance problems. Ditto the "local escorts" who, presumably are licensed. The bridge lacked warnings that the overhead was lower at the sides than in the center.

Don´t blame the truck driver. I know he´s ultimately responsible, but others failed to do their jobs as well.

was the driver a union member? Maybe it was the unions not the GOP that caused the crash?

Only kidding ...it was an accident, thats all.

Okay read the AP article. No surprise some eyewitness accounts were missing. Doesn´t cover the fact that a Navy Chief from NAS Whidbey stated he saw the truck forced into the steel framework by a second tractor trailer even though all the safety precautions had been taken the second one forced the wide load over. It would be interesting to hear the conclusion once the incident is thoroughly investigated. I totally agree with the posters who are shocked at how long it would take to rebuild that portion of I 5. It is a pretty simple project for some Reserve SeaBees to do during their active duty time. Tag team it quickly. I suspect Gov. Inslee wants to take this chance to replace and expand existing structure. Yes that would drag Patty (duh) Murray and Maria Cantwell into the limelight along with Rick Larsen. All Dims who would get fifteen minutes of fame. Not a pragmatist amongst them JMHO

This bridge did not collapse. It is impossible. Obama´s $700M+ stimulus fixed all of the bad roads and bridges.

He said it was his first priority since George Bush cause the Minneapolis bridge to fall.

What? You say the stimulus money went to union cronies an not to infrastructure?

So IF bridge collapses it MUST be the fault of ONE truck driver.

Obama was kept out of the loop.

Actually some recent surveys say roads and bridges are in better shape nationwide than they have ever been. This doesn´t mean there are no problems, just that roads have not been so good in the past.

The load, a massive steel object moving at the speed of the truck, struck several of the structural elements of the bridge. These crippled, causing the span to shorten until it dropped off the supports. A normal trailer hitting a low bridge would damage the trailer, but most of the energy would go toward ripping the top off the trailer. You don´t design bridges to take this kind of abuse to the structural elements.

To add to #9´s statement, State Senator Doug Ericksen from Ferndale told radio KGMI host Dillon Honcoop that of the state´s Roads and Bridges maintenance fund, only 50% of it actually goes to fund roads and bridges infrastructure. The other 50% is directed into pushing the public transportation notion designed to force - yes, force, because this a democrat controlled state -force people out of their cars into buses or onto bicycles. It´s the green thing the United Nations has co-erced the gullible into doing under the mantra of Agenda 21.
Another construction expert has stated that this bridge was designed to shear off a section should a destructive impact occur. It is little short of miraculous that there weren´t more vehicles involved - but two semis passing each other would take up nough bridge length to minimise room for other traffic.

FTA: “..He estimates that it will be ´weeks´ if not ´months´ to repair of replace the bridge span…”

First it will have to be determined that no endangered spiders, scorpions or frogs live within 2000 yards of the new structure…If so, a bypass bridge may have to built further up or down the river.
It will take a while. The incoming administration will have to fund it in 2016.

Of course they´ll drag their feet on it to make a political football out of it. the hell with inconvenienced drivers.

It´s also going to be a liability football when the lawsuits hit.

Maybe the strippers in British Columbia will take up a collection to get it fixed.

It was a balmy afternoon last July when the call came in: Dead body found inside empty warehouse on the West Side. Chicago police officers drove through an industrial stretch of the hardscrabble Austin neighborhood and pulled up to the 4600 block of West Arthington Street. The warehouse in question was an unremarkable-looking red-brick single-story building with a tall barbed-wire fence. Vacant for six years, it had been visited that day by its owner and a real-estate agent—the person who had called 911.

Five or six years ago a distinguished writer-director (if I may be permitted the epithet in connection with a Hollywood personage) was co-author of a screen play nominated for an Academy Award. He was too nervous to attend the proceedings on the big night, so he was listening to a broadcast at home, pacing the floor tensely, chewing his fingers, taking long breaths, scowling and debating with himself in hoarse whispers whether to stick it out until the Oscars were announced, or turn the damned radio off and read about it in the papers the next morning.

In the middle of an eastern Chinese city´s new main road, rising incongruously from a huge circle in the freshly laid pavement, is a five-story row house with ragged edges. This is the home of the duck farmer who said "no." Luo Baogen and his wife are the lone holdouts from a neighborhood that was demolished to make way for the main thoroughfare heading to a newly built railway station on the outskirts of the city of Wenling in Zhejiang province.

At a campaign rally for President Barack Obama yesterday in Virginia, former President Bill Clinton talked about bringing "this country together" and crossing "all of its diversity." Then, Clinton added this: "One of the things the decider-in-chief has to do is decide whether he’s going to bring this country together across all its diversity or let it drift apart. Look at how much stronger the American military is because it is less racist, less sexist and less homophobic and we’re just looking for people who can do the job," said Clinton.

Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

I live in Las Vegas. I live and breath Nevada politics. Something is very wrong. Something smells rotten in the Nevada desert. And Senator Harry Reid’s fingerprints are all over it. I am of course referring to the Bundy Ranch siege. This was a dispute between a Nevada ranching family with rights to the land in question for 140 years and the BLM (Bureayu of Land Management). The government claims they haven’t paid grazing fees for 20 years.
