´The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into ovens´: Outrage as Joan Rivers refuses to apologise after ´vulgar and offensive´ joke about Heidi Klum´s backside Daily Mail [UK], by Sam Webb
Joan Rivers has been blasted by a Jewish pressure group for a joke she made about German supermodel Heidi Klum´s daring Oscars outfit. ´The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens´, said the 79-year-old--herself Jewish--before doubling over with laughter. The veteran comedian made the comment about the Holocaust on Monday´s Fashion Police show on E! when reviewing the low-cut shimmering gold dress worn by the German beauty to attend Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in West Hollywood.[Snip]´Making it worse, not one of her co-hosts made any effort
Comments: Considering the source, not unexpected. But others around the woman should have at least cringed, for heaven´s sake.
Agree that this is in bad taste, but sort of in line with that old Yiddish saying: " If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade". I recall that Joan was bold enough to mock Hillary Clinton while she was trying to make believe she was a New Yorker and more recently referred to Michelle 0bama and her failed attempts to be fashionable as "Blackie O". Joan is OK in my book.
I saw this on the "Fashion Police" show Monday night. The others did cringe. It was a stupid joke, but she does this kind of thing all the time and Joan is all about trying to be funny. Most of the time, she´s somewhat funny, but I hate her politics.
She should probably apologize, but people should learn to let stuff pass instead of being perpetually outraged.
It is not funny, but I really think people need to stop getting all offended over everything. When I was younger I couldn´t stand Rivers -- probably because I had no tolerance for obnoxiousness back then. But in today´s world, Rivers is really tame. So, she is actually easier to listen to than most of the other so called comedians.
Anyway, #4, you hate her politics? What are her politics? As far as I know, she is a Republican. Maybe you don´t like her brand of Republicanism?
Rivers, Don Rickels--on and on. There are a lot of comics who use this kind of material mostly to create a shocked reaction from the audience. Love it or hate it, no point in getting worked up about it. They´re going to continue in the same vein. It´s all they know.
In the early 90s I visited Yad Vashem in Israel. When I came out of the Children´s Memorial I saw one of the men in our group completely break down in tears. His parents had escaped the camps (they were children at the time and eventually met here in the U.S). NO ONE else in the family survived. I will never, ever forget that man and the pain and sorrow I saw that day.
Vulgar and offensive does not begin to describe it.
The dress looks like a fancy curtain cut up. It is hardly "hot". Also, there are a lot of hotter looking tail ends in Hollywood. You can even see better in Wal-Mart. I don´t like to judge anyone solely on their appearance, but when that´s how she is marketed I figure its fair game.
#13 I always thought she was a typical Hollywood/Jewish leftie because I seem to remember that she´s said some pretty nasty things about conservatives and republicans. Sorry if I´m mistaken, but I´m as conservative as they come - please don´t ever think I´m a liberal!
Joan and her daughter Melissa have their own reality show. She rolls those jokes off her tongue on a daily basis. She has a huge gay following also. I think she does it for attention but I´m really surprised that QVC still allows her to hawk her wares on their shopping network. She makes a mint.
Joan is OK in my book also!! Love her quick wit. Don´t hear her F...... and Mother....... every other word during her acts to get attention and laughs. She´s tough, smart and a real survivor. The relationship she and Melissa have is the envy of many a mother. The "joke" was a little off but hey she´s Jewish and has the right to tell sometimes not-so-funny jokes. So America...lighten up!
I agree - lighten up, peeps. She´s Jewish - it´s a typical Joan wisecrack - and if you´re offended, you might be a little too sensitive. She wouldn´t dream of apologizing and has no reason to. She´s truly an equal opportunity poker of fun.
Giving Rivers a pass because she´s Jewish means you dont believe in free speech,... ( hear me out!). If such jokes are offensive for Gentiles to tell ( as I think they are) then they ought to be offensive if Jews tell them. You would be p*$$ed if a German said that, or if a Muslim comedian said that. Just like with black humor... and the N word. blacks can say it, but others are wrong if they say the word? Point is, if it´s bad/wrong for one, it should be bad/wrong for all. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Rivers ceased to be funny decades ago. Vulgarity and cruelty are no substitute for wit. Ever. Carson could break up an audience just by lifting an eyebrow. Rivers wasnt worthy to clean his boots.
Yes she is offensive. So what? Lots of people are far more so than her and we dare not criticize them because of their pigmentation or religion. Its not right, but it is reality. I see things every day that are so disgusting they make me cringe, but in order to live my life the way I want, I have to leave them alone to live theirs. That´s what freedom is. Someone else can control other peoples´ behavior. Its not my day to do it.
The U.S. Gross Domestic Product jumped by an annual rate of 3.6 percent in the third quarter of 2013, the U.S. Commerce Department said, surprising analysts who had forecasted a more modest 2.8 percent increase in the nation´s economic output. Commerce´s Bureau of Economic Affairs released its quarterly economic report on Thursday. Growth in the second quarter of the year was just 2.5 percent. That´s a dramatic improvement from the 0.12 percent growth during 2009, the first year of Barack Obama´s presidency. But it pales in comparison to the 7.71 percent average annual growth seen during the Reagan years.
The president and his supporters are pushing to get higher wages for American workers, but the nation´s largest pro-Obama organizing group is telling its footsoldiers not to expect a paycheck at all. Organizing For Action, which flexed its muscles as Obama For America during two presidential election campaigns, announced Wednesday that it´s seeking ´Spring Organizing Fellows´ to ´be a part of our growing organization´ and ´explor[e] OFA´s broad scope approach to issue advocacy.´ But unlike most fellowships, which offer a stipend or a housing allowance, the positions are strictly ´unpaid´ and require Americans to work ´without the expectation of pay,
An American chemistry teacher has been shot dead by gunmen in the Libyan city of Benghazi, security sources said on Thursday. The attackers shot a 33-year-old staff member of the Benghazi International School while he was out for a morning jog, sources said. He was originally from Texas. No one has claimed responsibility for the shooting. [Snip] The U.S. Department of State made no comment when contacted by MailOnline on Thursday. AFP reported that a 33-year-old man was shot dead in the central Al-Fwihet neighborhood of Benghazi. He was brought to Benghazi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead of
America´s National Security Agency is tracking mobile phones around the world, according to the latest leaks from whistleblower Edward Snowden. Almost five billion records a day are being gathered which allow intelligence officials to track individuals and map their relationships in ways previously unimaginable, the classified documents suggest. [Snip] The location data comes from tapping into cables connecting mobile phone networks around the world, it is said. Analysts are able to locate a mobile phone and then retrace the owner’s movements, exposing their connections to others, it is claimed. The NSA said that they do not intend to target the
The Home Secretary is to challenge her European counterparts to change the way free movement rules work across the region at a meeting in Brussels. Theresa May will tell justice and home affairs ministers of fellow European Union member states the UK is frustrated by the European Commission´s failure to tackle free movement abuse. Ahead of the meeting, Mrs May discussed measures to tackle this abuse such as applying a cap on numbers if European immigration reaches certain thresholds. Her comments come after David Cameron unveiled measures to deter immigrants from within the EU but also suggested in the future, labour movement
The US and China have had "very direct" talks about concerns over China´s new air defence identification zone, US Vice-President Joe Biden said. Speaking after meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Mr Biden said the zone had caused "apprehension" in Asia. Talks in Mr Biden´s Asia trip have been dominated by a new air zone declared by China, which covers islands controlled by Japan in the East China Sea. China says its move is consistent with "international law and practice". China announced a new Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) last month, and said aircraft flying through the zone must follow
It is a story as heart-warming of one of their Christmas adverts. John Lewis has launched an appeal to find the five-year-old girl who wrote them a letter saying sorry for breaking a bauble. Known only as Faith, the girl sent a handwritten apology to her local store after she said she accidentally broke the decoration on a visit to the shop. Faith even attached two pound coins to the note, apologising for the damage she caused at the Cambridge branch of the department store. The letter arrived there after being posted to the ‘Christmas Department’ soon after her visit.
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
