| The White House is coming under pressure from liberal Democrats in the House and Senate to press for a minimum wage hike as high as $10.10. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) argues President Obama “missed the mark” in calling to raise the minimum wage to $9 in his State of the Union address, and his staff met with White House staff last week to argue for a higher number. The veteran senator, who will retire at the end of this Congress, is working with Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) on legislation that would

It is time for the Republicans to call the Democrats bluff and introduce a bill raising the minimum wage to $50 an hour. Then they can ask why the Democrats are such penny pinchers.

Make minimum wage $100/hr. Then everyone will be rich, right? (No doubt, there are those stupid enough to think that idea would work.)

I agree with you, #1. I´m tired of the slow drip. Republicans should stand up and declare that no one should have to work for poverty wages and that Government needs to quit fooling around and make life easier for everyone. $45,000 dollars a year, once you take the taxes out, is a living wage that allows people to make a house payment, a car payment and, if they´re frugal, take a small vacation. If the Democrats won´t vote for it, call them on it. Ask them why not. Make them own this insanity.

How about what Obama makes (not including golf and vacations and campaigning.
At an average of 1 hour per day/5 days a week - that is $400,000/260 hours = $1,538/hour.
Let´s be generous and make it $1,550 per hour.
Sounds good to me.

The minimum wage should be renamed the minority teen unemployment act. That´s who get hits the hardest. It´s cruel. Harkin´s a racist.

In liberal urban utopias - with the high costs of living - the effective (market-driven) minimum wage is already dollars higher than the federal requirement. Thus any Obama or Harkin increase would serve only to make the non urban areas less competitive.

If the raising of the minimum wage doesn´t help the poor working class (reduces employment of those on the lower wage end), who does it help? Answer: all the union and government workers whose wages are tied to the minimum wage and would see almost immediate increases in their wages. The higher the increase in the minimum, the more unemployment we will see and also immediate inflation in all the products and services we buy- another redistribution of wealth!

Youngest son has a minimum wage part time job in retail. As of january 1, his employer has made sure my son stays under 30 hours per week to avoid kenyacare requirements. An increase in minimum wage will mean another decrease in work hours. The idiots in congress, for the most part, do not understand the implications of minimum wage increases.

In all honesty, a minumum wage hike is a pay cut for most of the rest of us..unless your wages are indexed directly to the minwage.

1. I missed the part where Harkin explains how all covered jobs will be mandated to produce more than $10.10 net return for the employer. Edited out for time constraints, I guess? Anybody got a link to that part?
2. Do you know the saying, "There are always two reasons. The reason they give you, and the real reason"? Well, the real reason for a min wage increase is that many union contracts are calculated as multiples of the minimum wage. That´s the "quid" from the Dems. Union campaign contributions are the "pro quo" of this de facto money-laundering machinery.

I propose a special "undocumented worker" minimum wage of $100/hr. In addition, if an undocumented worker files a complaint against his employer for not paying the minimum, they get $100,000 payment out of the fines for every employer who is turned in for non-compliance.

The man shot dead by an FBI agent in Orlando, Florida early today was "about to sign a statement" admitting to a role, along with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in an unsolved triple murder in Massachusetts in 2011, two people with direct knowledge of the case told ABC News. Ibragim Todashev "just went crazy," and pulled a knife during his interview with the FBI, said state and federal law enforcement officials briefed on the latest strange twist in the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing. One official said an FBI agent was stabbed several times,

WASHINGTON- Senator Elizabeth Warren has found a publisher two months after the Massachusetts Democrat began shopping her book proposal. Henry Holt and Company, one of the nation’s oldest publishers, announced it had obtained the rights to publish the book, which it characterized as telling both “Senator Warren’s improbable rise from a working class family in Oklahoma to the United States Senate,” as well as providing “a rousing call for protecting the middle class.” The book will be published in the spring of 2014 and will be edited by John Sterling, who is editor at large for Macmillan,

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. A large majority of Americans hold a bleak outlook on the state of morality in the United States, as 72% said the nation’s moral values are “getting worse,” and only 20% said that moral values are “getting better,” according to a recent Gallup survey. The poll specifically showed that Americans who attend church weekly, are married, or are Republican, were the most negative about the country’s moral direction. But even Democrats, people who attend church infrequently, and the unmarried had high negative outlooks about the nation’s moral values. In the telephone survey of 1,535 adults

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa on Wednesday displayed a string of emails showing his failed efforts to get an update from the Treasury Department inspector general’s office about its investigation into the IRS practice of targeting conservative groups who sought tax-exempt status. Emails seeking the information date back to September 2012, six weeks before the November election. At that point, the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration had promised an update. Based on other evidence provided to the committee, the inspector general was aware of the IRS practice of targeting conservative groups

Piled high amid a trail of destruction, these tragic horses are among more than 100 thought to have been killed in the Oklahoma tornado. As well as human lives that were lost, farms around the suburb of Moore took a direct hit from the giant twister which swept up everything in its path with winds of more than 200mph and the power of up to 600 nuclear bombs. Witnesses who cowered in terror described seeing ´horses and stuff flying around everywhere´ and returning to find ´scorched earth´ and crumpled buildings. They came across distressing scenes of horses

A mother-of-two described tonight how she put her own life on the line by trying to persuade the soldier’s murderers to hand over their weapons. Cub scout leader Ingrid Loyau-Kennett selflessly engaged the terrorists in conversation and kept her nerve as one of them told her: “We want to start a war in London tonight.” Mrs Loyau-Kennett, 48, from Cornwall, was one of the first people on the scene after the two Islamic extremists butchered a soldier in Woolwich, south east London. She was photographed by onlookers confronting one of the attackers who was holding a bloodied knife.

Former Rep. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
