Pope Benedict quits Vatican with
promise to obey successor

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict left the Vatican on Thursday after pledging unconditional obedience to whoever succeeds him to guide the Roman Catholic Church at one of the most crisis-ridden periods in its 2,000-year history. [Snip] Bells rang out from St Peter´s Basilica and churches all over Rome as the helicopter circled Vatican City and flew over the Colosseum and other landmarks to give the pontiff one last view of the city where he is also bishop.

Comments:
I am not a Roman Catholic, so I can only imagine what many Catholics are feeling today.

Seeing the scenes of Rome today brought back waves of memories and nostalgia for the Eternal City, where I lived for four years. The feelings I have for Rome cannot be put into words.

". . . at one of the most crisis-ridden periods in its 2,000-year history."??

The church has served attacks by armies, by plagues, by all sorts of conflicts and intrigues. In the long history of the Roman Catholic Church, this is NOTHING.

I would suggest the papacy of Alexander the VI was a bit more crisis-ridden ... just to name one.

#1, I would agree that this is not anywhere close to the most crisis-ridden period of Catholic Church history. I would put the East-West schism in the period of around 1000-1100 AD represents a time of much greater crisis. Another time of much greater crisis is the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. Both of those represented much greater crises for the Catholic Church than any of the controversies of my lifetime.

Sad day. Hard to know what´s going on but stormy weather is in the forecast.

Benedict promised to obey the new pope:
Gosh, does this mean he will have to obey the 10 Commandments, subscribe to the Apostles Creed and Attend Mass each Sunday?
What a burden?

There has rarely been less of a "crisis-ridden" period than today. It isn´t hard to rattle off a pretty long list of "crises:" Communism, Nazism, Reformation, struggle with Islam, schisms, various heresies...this is nothing.

I also don´t get the attempt to worry about Benedict messing with the new guy. What in his resume suggests that? Projection by the writer perhaps? He´s old, tired and ready to move on. Why is that so hard to understand?

Doctors at the University of Michigan have saved a baby’s life using the marvels of modern technology to “print” the child a new airway using a goundbreaking 3-D printer to restore his breathing. [Snip] Every day, their baby stopped breathing, his collapsed bronchus blocking the crucial flow of air to his lungs. April and Bryan Gionfriddo watched helplessly, just praying that somehow the dire predictions weren’t true.

Via Ed Morrissey, Jeffrey Lord at the American Spectator has tracked down either a fascinating coincidence or a smoking gun that puts Obama right in the middle of the IRS scandal. [Snip] According to the White House Visitors Log, provided here in searchable form by U.S. News and World Report, the president of the anti-Tea Party National Treasury Employees Union, Colleen Kelley, visited the White House at 12:30pm that Wednesday noon time of March 31st.

The families of Navy SEALs killed in an August 2011 shoot-down of a helicopter in Afghanistan spoke at a press conference Thursday morning, citing a number of grievances, including an allegation that the Pentagon invited a Muslim cleric who “disparaged in Arabic the memory of these servicemen.” In addition to blasting the Obama administration for the mission and for an official investigation they deemed a cover-up, the families complained that “military brass, while prohibiting any mention of a Judeo-Christian God, invited a Muslim cleric to the funeral for the fallen

I don´t know Jason Collins per se, nor do I think I would ever wish to. [Snip] It is perhaps one thing for Collins to "out" himself as a homosexual, after years of copulating with both men and women, and quite another to begrudge the courtesy of this highly pertinent information to his then beard, er... fiancé. Certainly, the propensity towards same-sex attraction does not fall upon one unawares, as would a meteorite, and a principled individual would consider such special knowledge a significant factor in any future marital equation.

Coptic Christians Need Help Now

If Obama were truly interested in the downtrodden of the world, he would be publicizing the plight of Egyptian Coptic Christians who are being decimated as a result of ongoing pillaging and murder by Muslim jihadists. In Raymond Ibrahim´s new book, titled Crucified Again: Exposing Islam´s New War on Christians there are, according to baptismal records of the Coptic Orthodox Church, some 16 million Christian Copts in Egypt. [Snip] According to Raymond Ibrahim, the St. Mark Cathedral "holds symbolic and historical significance for all Christians," and this is "precisely why it was attacked" on April 7, 2013.

Roy Spencer is a climate scientist at the University of Alabama Huntsville who may be the world´s most important scientist. He has discovered scientific insights and theories that cast great doubt on global warming doctrine. That doctrine has always been dubious and is often defended by attacking the integrity of anyone who dares to raise questions. Spencer is a rare combination of a brilliant scientist and a brave soul willing to risk his livelihood and reputation by speaking plainly.

The Mormon bishop who used a samurai sword to defend a neighbor lady being attacked by a stalker is just an irresistible story. So many contemporary memes collide. [Snip] Kent Hendrix woke up Tuesday to his teenage son pounding on his bedroom door and telling him somebody was being mugged in front of their house. The 47-year-old father of six rushed out the door and grabbed the weapon closest to him -- a 29-inch high carbon steel Samurai sword.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.
