L’Affaire Woodward

So Bob Woodward says he was threatened by …. Gene Sperling. I guess I’m just off the reservation on this whole thing. Now, I think Woodward’s reporting is trustworthy — on this (I don’t always take his version of events as gospel. See Bill Casey’s deathbed confession). But the “threat” thing strikes me as exaggerated. I expressed this view last night on twitter and a lot of friends on the right leapt to defend Woodward’s interpretation. “He’s been around, he knows what a threat looks like” seemed to be the general attitude.

Comments:
The email cited in Jonah´s piece is excellent. ´Only Woodward could challenge this White House.´ It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Thank you, Jonah. Woodward´s obvious fabrications in the Casey book will forever taint anything he says, as far as I am concerned. However, remember how appalled and offended the White House press corps was when Ari Fleischer told them they should watch what they say? Certainly, they all pretended they felt threatened and the major media played it for weeks as a White House assault on the freedom of the press. Ok, MSM, if Fleischer´s was a threat, Sperling´s was a threat

Appears a second person went public today as being threatened for criticizing the Obama Administration. No one in the WH is going to put a direct threat into an e-mail unless they are completely ignorant. A person knows when he/she is being threatened. The WH wants to shut down all opposition at any cost.

The CrapMedia, of which Woodward is part, created the nightmare that is Obama, so I don`t feel one bit sorry for any of them if they are stabbed in the back by this WH. The MSM have been stabbing all of us in the back for decades. What would any of them expect when they purposely fasten a ball and chain around their own ankles? Screw all of them....

In the absence of strong evidence to the contrary, it would seem most reasonable to take Bob Woodward at his word as to the actual or implied intent of the conversation and communications between him and Sperling. Second guessing him on the basis of an email would only be warranted if Woodward had a documented history of misunderstanding or misrepresenting matters in which he was personally involved. As far as I am aware, he has no such history. He was present and on the scene during the evidently heated exchange with Sperling that led to the latter´s apology. If Woodward says he felt threatened by the whole experience it is more than a little presumptuous to claim that he had no basis whatever for such an impression. I like Jonah Goldberg, but he is on thin ice with this issue.

In the interests of accuracy, #14, censorship can only be committed by a government entity, just as freedom of speech can only be curtailed by a government entity. If the proprietor of a private website doesn´t like what you have to say, he or she is free to ban you from posting. Or chastise you. I seem to be out of the loop on this thread. I am not really sure what the beef is or who has it. Is someone, i.e. me, attacking Jonah Goldberg? I am not aware of doing so. But as a matter of principle, is attacking Jonah Goldberg verboten? Is disagreeing with him about something the same as attacking him? Does zero tolerance mean no disagreement with him about anything, ever?

My point was that, all things considered, Bob Woodward would seem to be in the best position to know whether he was or should have felt threatened by Sperling. I don´t really see how someone who wasn´t there, did not engage in the heated discussions etc. would be in a position to appreciate and integrate the total picture. I don´t think a single email would be sufficient to capture the mood and the subtleties. Now, if it is a known, proven fact that Bob Woodward is a liar, if he has been documented to exaggerate, fabricate or misrepresent facts, then obviously there would be grounds to question his account. There may be such proof - I really do not know that much about him, but I am not aware that, unlike Obama et al., he is a documented dissembler.

Who are what is Yosemite Sam? Is this management? What on earth is going on her? I don´t get the picture.

Tony Dolan won a Pulitzer for exposing organized crime in Conn.
At the same time his friend Dan Boies sp? Was assassinated in Nevada-bomb in his car-for the same thing.
Bois car was on display in the Newseum in Dc for his bravery.
When I asked Tony how he survived, he said if anyone threatened him-he would publish it the next day.
Woodward knows Or should know by now - that he is dealing with a thugocracy - think Clinton´s on steroids.
Is he th canary or is he the beginning of the end for Obama and his islamofascists thugs.

Bob Woodward, whatever we think of him, has been around for a long time. Whether or not he felt "threatened" (and that isn´t our prerogative to judge), he did have the integrity to expose 0bama´s lies this time. I´ll give credit where credit is due. And who knows, perhaps other "reporters" will follow suit, because Woodward surely isn´t alone.

How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.

Sheesh! Talk about a complete ingrate... Many people suspect that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) instigated an over the top paramilitary confrontation with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy at the behest of Senator Harry Reid especially since the new BLM director, Neil Kornze, was an aide to Reid. So how does Harry´s son, Rory Reid, thank the BLM rangers for putting their lives at risk over desert tortoises that are being euthanized by the Feds? Why, he slams them as "losers" on Las Vegas television station KSNV where Rory serves as a commentator from the left. You can see Reid in

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." President Obama inspired a generation of young people to support his historic election in 2008. And in 2012, despite the struggles of his first term, Mr. Obama still managed to win the support of a full 60% of voters age 18-29. But the man who once dreamed of being a transformative leader in the Reagan mold is inspiring few of those young people to follow his lead. "For all the talk about the movement that elected Mr. Obama, the more notable movement of Obama supporters has been away from politics. It appears that few of the young people who voted

Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)
