| The feds say Sarah Palin is firing blanks with her claim that the government is “stockpiling bullets” for potential civil unrest in case the country defaults on its loans. While government agencies are, in fact, purchasing large amounts of ammunition, they are doing so for training exercises and shooting ranges, according to federal officials. The Washington Post last month summed up the Department of Homeland Security’s buying of more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition for training with an article headlined, “Not so sinister: Homeland Security is stockpiling ammo for target practice.” And last summer, the Social Security Administration’s Office

Comments: Lots of people have discussed the big buys of bullets. Palin isn´t alone. But, it´s fear-mongering to use her Facebook forum, knowing she has a wide audience there, to speculate that the purpose is to quell "civil unrest" by using the stores against US citizens. Mark Levin is using his mike to set the same kind of fire. That´s the kind of rhetoric Obama is using about the sequester and we are, rightfully, condemning the inflammatory projections.

Sarah Palin wasn´t alone in wonderful why the government was stockpiling ammunision. Conjecture ranged from them attempting to take bullets off the market and run up the price to preparing for civil war in case of a monetary collapse. So, why attempt to make her appear foolish, when a lot of people were thinking out loud about possibilities. It wasn´t just media created, right wing extremists, who were thinking out loud. Even liberals were wondering; even they could read the rumors too.

I call BS. Exactly how many employees of DHS are issued firearms? 1.6 Billion rounds is a lot of bullets.
Let´s see...according to their website:
•Number of DHS employees: 199,492 •Number of bullets: 1,600,000,000
That would be 8,020 rounds of ammunition for every employee...and I´m guessing not everyone gets a firearm.

Very few law enforcement agencies practice with hollow-point bullets. They´re simply too expensive and not appropriate to practice.
A hollow-point bullet is designed to expand in flesh, it is an operational round. It is also only for domestic use in law enforcement, it is BANNED under the Laws of Armed Conflict.

According to Tom Gresham, and he would know, the use hollow points for practice because federal law requires them to practice with the same ammunition they carry. Simple as that. It´s a stupid law, but there it is.

Palin like the rest of us depends on the media getting their stories correct. She based her opinion on incorrect media reporting. The correction only came out after her FB opinion. Keep in mind this is the second order placed for ammo. I´ve seen no correction to the first large order. The first was large enough not to need another.

Generally speaking, because of cost, most agencies use FMJ rounds for practice and hollow points to carry. I believe you are required to train with the same caliber round not necessarily the exact type of round (i.e. issue 40 caliber pistols but train with .22 LR).
Lets see what the different agencies purchased in the past years and compare what they are buying now. I highly doubt they would be in the numbers being quoted today.

Many of us have watched these huge purchases of bullets, and many of the purchases have been "hollow point," a very deadly bullet that rips through a body. No one would ever use hollow point ammo for target practice or training. If one adds up the fed´s purchases, they now have enough bullets to kill every man woman and child about seven times. And please tell me why the Social Security Administration would need millions of rounds of hollow point bullets?

The "target practice" story makes sense - if we assume that all armed Federal employees are at the range 5 days a week and most weekends, banging away and raising a racket that can be heard for miles around. They would have to be practicing their shooting even on major holidays to use up such incredible amounts of ammo. If it were actually the case that there is this much target practicing going on, the same question would remain: how come? What possible need is there for such marksmanship? Who do the Feds plan to be shooting?
It would be illuminating to have the statistics on actual practice times and ammunition consumed, as well as the number of times Federal employees discharge a firearm each year in pursuance of duty.
People pushing the "target practice" story obviously think Americans are really stupid.
I have no idea why the Feds are stockpiling such vast quantities of ammo - but the absurd story that it is merely for routine target practice is an insult to our intelligence. The willingness of the media to accept and defend this preposterous claim is another mark of shame for a once proud and loyal profession.

# 14 - Just like the journ-O-lists and TV media the group of 7 or 8 love finding any negative article about Gov. Palin. Even though she has been proven to be correct in her many comments, either by Facebook, Twitter or in her many speeches. One would assume if the comments were made by Chris Christi, Romney, Jeb Bush, Dewherst or someone comparable to the aforementioned the sounding of trumpets, the bowing of knee and all their wonderful attributes would be recounted time and time again. Even after 5 years their hatred of Gov. Palin sticks out like a sore thumb.

Ah, but #26, it´s pretty simple to be "correct" when you are just following others. The stockpiling of ammo has been discussed for months in the media and on these threads. The difference with Palin is that she has attributed a sinister motive that is unsubstantiated. If she has a source for her claim, I assume she will share it.

Tell a falsehood enough times and it becomes fact.
If you look at the original purchasing documents, these reports are off by a factor of 1000 due to misreading the units.
I am pretty sure that the reported 1.6 billion should be 1.6 MILLION. This has been fairly widely reported here and elsewhere but apparently people would rather be hysterical instead of looking up the facts.
And YES, many agencies will ONLY practice with the same ammo as they use in actual work - two sensible reasons. First - the officers need to know the recoil and point of impact that they are practicing with will be the same in actual use. Second - semiauto pistols will not always function properly with all ammo types. Some hollowpoint ammo will not feed properly. Proper function is best verified by training with the exact ammo to be used in "real life".

Pollster John Zogby reports in our weekly White House report card that President Obama´s scandal-filled disaster week has cost him his majority support and sapped enthusiasm for his second term. "As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth might have said, this was ´weekus horribilis´ for President Obama. Three fires in the form of three scandals to put out in one week. Are locusts next? While Obama has tried to get ahead of each -- Benghazi, the Associated Press, and the IRS vs. the Tea Party -- the time to get ahead of these things is, well, ahead of them.

Security along the U.S. border with Mexico is perhaps the key factor in the debate over comprehensive immigration reform. Those who believe the border is mostly secure already are more inclined to support the plan of the bipartisan Gang of Eight in the Senate -- legalization first, followed by enhanced security. Those who believe the border is still far from secure are more likely to oppose the Gang of Eight´s approach, insisting that heightened security measures be in place before the nation´s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants are legalized. Now, a new report from the Council on Foreign Relations

There was a running joke in the fall of 2008 that John McCain should simply re-air Hillary Clinton’s “3 a.m. phone call” ad, which highlighted Barack Obama’s lack of experience and meager knowledge of world affairs, and just tack on “I’m John McCain, and I approve this message” at the end of the ad. The point was that thanks to the bitter primary battle between the Clintons and Obama, Democrats had already developed the most effective lines of attack against Obama, and Republicans needed only to nod their heads in agreement. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

"We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

A healthcare provider has sued the Internal Revenue Service and 15 of its agents, charging they wrongfully seized 60 million medical records from 10 million Americans. The name of the provider is not yet known, United Press International said. But Courthouse News Service said the suit claims the agency violated the Fourth Amendment in 2011, when agents executed a search warrant for financial data on one employee – and that led to the seizure of information on 10 million, including state judges. The search warrant did not specify that the IRS could take medical information, UPI said.
