Chuck Hagel confirmed as US
defence secretary by Senate

BBC News [UK], by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 2/26/2013 5:26:32 PM

The US Senate has confirmed former Senator Chuck Hagel as the new Pentagon chief, after a bloc of Republicans dropped their opposition to him. The former Republican Nebraska senator was confirmed by 58-41 in a simple majority vote.[Snip] The Senate move comes 12 days after Republicans delayed a vote, questioning his past positions on Israel and Iran and his qualifications for the post. But critics dropped the manoeuvre, the first for a defence secretary confirmation, after a week-long recess. Mr Obama´s Democratic Party holds a 55-45 edge in the chamber, and Mr Hagel ultimately only needed 51 votes to be confirmed.

The stupid party found a way to have one of its supidest members ever receive confirmation.

A delay meant nothing and has accomplished nothing. Imbeciles!

Take a deep breath. This is not a loss, unless you have subjected yourself to countless hours of droning by Mark Levin on this. Going to war over one a president´s choice for his cabinet would have been a massive mistake: like Lee at Antitum or Napolean at Waterloo. Hagel is a decent man, a Republican, and he will do a fine job. Stop listening to the blithering idiots of talk radio because all they do is lose. They have declared war on Karl Rove. To the political right of Karl Rove is noman´s land. Stop living in these guys´ fantasy land. You and your country deserve better!

So who are the four Republicans who voted for him (or abstained). And did any Democrats vote against him. The numbers imply that some may have.

RHINO Hagel is an idiot, a tool of Bow-Boy and the Marxists infecting our government, a gross insult to our armed forces, and an enemy of Israel to say nothing of democracy and the Republic.

The only bigger insult to the armed forces is Bow-Boy.

"Things" are not all right and are not going to work out just fine Pollyanna.

As usual, the troll king offers bad advice to LDotters. What do the Republicans gain by consenting to a truly bad candidate such as Hagel? I´m not suggesting that they should oppose everyone Obama nominates (because, in truth, he will never nominate a worthy person, and opposing all his nominees will appear inflexibly partisan). But you have to push back when it´s appropriate. Voting against Hagel would have been good practice for the Senate Republicans before Obama attempts to stack the SCOTUS with more leftists. A better strategy would be to make a clear, convincing case before the American people for why you oppose a nominee.

"The four Republican senators voting in favor were Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Johanns (Neb.), Richard C. Shelby (Ala.) and Rand Paul (Ky.). All 41 no votes came from Republicans."

If you do the math you get one Dem not voting.

Rand Paul voted "yes." Let that sink in and brew a while. Rand Paul. "Yes" for Hagel. McCain, Rubio, Graham as "no´s."

I blogged yesterday about this "segregated" Muslim event organised by the Islamic Society of the University of East London, due to happen tonight at UEL´s main lecture theatre on its Docklands campus. Much to my surprise, UEL immediately banned it from their campus. [Snip] UEL should be congratulated over this. As I pointed out, it has an "equality and diversity" policy. It didn´t know that the dinner organised by the Islamic society--which was to include a speech by the controversial anti-gay preacher Murtaza Khan--was segregated by sex and was providing a platform for an extremist. Deep in the flat and featureless landscape of eastern Ukraine, it is all too possible that the outline of World War III is taking shape. Whipped up by the Kremlin propaganda machine and led by Russian military intelligence, armed men are erecting road blocks, storming police stations and ripping down the country’s flag. They are demolishing not just their own country — bankrupt, ill-run and beleaguered — but also the post-war order that has kept most of Europe and us, here in Britain, safe and free for decades. Vladimir Putin is striking at the heart of the West.

The Internal Revenue Service is considering a bold move to label perks like free lunch given to workers by companies as taxable. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive.
