Benedict XVI to Keep His Name
and Become Pope Emeritus

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI will keep the name Benedict XVI and become the Roman pontiff emeritus or pope emeritus, the Vatican announced on Tuesday, putting an end to days of speculation on how the pope will be addressed once he ceases to be the leader of the world’s 1.1 billion Roman Catholics on Thursday. Benedict, the first pope to resign voluntarily in six centuries, will dress in a simple white cassock, forgoing the mozzetta, the elbow-length cape worn by some Catholic clergymen, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, told reporters at a news briefing.

Now we know why the Church has lasted so long. Because popes only resign once every 600 years.

When someone dies, especially a pope, the reaction is to speak only well of the dead. That´s what funerals are for.

A deceased Pope Benedict could have had a respectful send-off. But his resignation allowed the world´s liberal anti-Christian media to pour into the Vatican and, with nothing much to do in the long interim before a new pope is chosen, bring up scandals and generally rake both Benedict and the Church over the coals.

In the future, as long as a pope is able to be wheeled up to a window in Saint Peter´s, and, however feebly, deliver some sort of service, he should remain in his job. A pope too sick to appear in a window would at least command the world´s sympathy enough to keep the media vultures from destroying his reputation.

I am so glad he will keep his name. He was anointed Benedict XVI and will always be that. But I will call him Santo Nonno...Holy Grandfather. He will always be our dear German Shepard. Long live BXVI.

#3, nothing will keep the liberal media vultures at bay, even when a pope dies "with his boots on", or in this case, the red shoes. I remember the media jumping all over JPII´s last days saying he SHOULD resign. They are (pardon the expression) hell bent on criticizing the Catholic Church at every chance. Sadly, some of our own priests and bishops have given them fodder to fuel the fires. Nothing saddens devout Catholics more than the harm some priests and bishops have done to children and the scandal they have caused our Church. But we remain, and will remain, devoted adherents to our Faith. Jesus didn´t found a church of saints. He founded a church for sinners, where we could aspire to and strive to become saints. Blessed by the name of Jesus.

Since God still directs and disposes the new Pope will not be elected will he.
Election is a media political term and they must pretend they have an influence over the process.

I think it´s fair to call this an election, #8. These are humans, with all their biases, etc. If you like "conclave" better, fine with me, but these are a bunch of old Cardinals voting among their own.

#4 ... German Shepherd, not a worthy Sheeple dog.

Hate to spoil the conspiracy-theory free-for-all; but the name a pope takes doesn´t revert when he stops being pope, even ones who are eventually canonized. It doesn´t indicate that he´ll consider himself a lingering pontiff (or a co-pope).

As for ominous backroom plotting, get a grip. Benedict will effectively vanish from the public eye and ear after Friday, provided the controversy-hungry press lets him do that.

But I expect they will keep him, his residence, and his close aides under constant surveillance from here on out, the way they do for headline celebrities. And the tabloid paparazzi will have to concoct a new outrageous story every few weeks just to keep their jobs. Sooner or later they´ll have him getting abducted by aliens and marrying Kim Kardashian...

I take it he´s not moving to Avignon.

WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama said Wednesday that stories of toil and sweat by slaves once held at a historic home within sight of the White House are an important part of U.S. history, including her own personal story, and are "as vital to our national memory as any other." The first lady commented as American Express announced its donation of $1 million to the White House Historical Association to preserve Decatur House and pay for education programs for children. The nearly 200-year-old house is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated by the association.

Here’s an indication of how burdensome student loans have become : About one-third of millennials say they would have been better off working, instead of going to college and paying tuition. (Snip) Delinquencies are also on the rise. The number of borrowers who are at least 90 days late on student loan payments has jumped from 8.5% in 2011 to 11.7% today, according to a study by the New York Federal Reserve. The problem sometimes is that not all college educations are worth their cost since they can’t guarantee a high-paying job to help pay off that student debt.

WASHINGTON - iPad maker saving billions of dollars in U.S. taxes through Irish subsidiaries and told lawmakers that his company backs corporate tax reform, even though it may end up paying more. The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has found that Apple in 2012 alone avoided paying $9 billion in U.S. taxes, using a strategy involving three offshore units with no discernible tax home, or "residence." Cook, in his first congressional testimony since becoming Apple CEO in 2011, said his company is a major taxpayer, handing over nearly $6 billion in cash to the U.S. government in 2012.

Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll sharply reject special scrutiny of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service, suspect an administration cover-up of the Benghazi incident and express substantial distrust of the federal government more generally. (Snip) Longer-term impacts of contentious current issues remain to be seen, but there´s potential for significant damage to the administration. Americans by a vast 74-20 percent see the IRS´ behavior as inappropriate, with most feeling that way strongly - and 56 percent see it as a deliberate attempt to harass conservative organizations, not a mere administrative error.

A massive tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., Monday afternoon, leveling a huge swath of a residential area in the suburb of Oklahoma City. Video footage from KFOR-TV showed houses, businesses and at least two schools completely demolished, with cars strewn about. Police and emergency crews have begun to respond, but debris has clogged roadways. There is no tally yet on injuries or deaths, but news anchors said significant casualties are expected. At least one large fire has broken out amid the rubble. The twister is already being compared to the May 3, 1999 storm that ripped through Moore

LOS ANGELES - More poor people live in the nation´s suburbs than in urban cities because of affordable housing, service-sector jobs and the increased use of housing vouchers, according to a study released Monday. The number of those in poverty living in suburbs jumped 67 percent between 2000 and 2011, a much larger increase than in cities, researchers for the Brookings Institution said. Suburbs, however, still have a smaller percentage of the poor than cities do. The report notes that poor people were pulled to the suburbs by more affordable homes and followed jobs that were often low paying.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
