A uniformed French soldier on anti-terrorist duties in Paris had his throat cut by a knife-wielding man tonight. The savage attack follows the murder of a British soldier by two men using weapons including knives and a meat cleaver. One of the suspects said they were acting in the name of Islam. Today there were fears that the Paris attack was a copy-cat crime and that a radical Muslim might once more be responsible. Barack Obama announced an end to America’s war on terror last week. In future, he declared, he would restrict the unmanned drone attacks that had been his own signature anti-terrorist initiative, and he would really, really make an effort to shut down the prison camp at Guantánamo Bay--as he had promised to do way back when he was running for president the first time. Presumably, this pronouncement was designed to win back the favour of the liberal media, which has been energetically disowning him ever since his administration staggered into the most spectacular series of Washington scandals since Watergate.

There has been a sixth night of rioting in Sweden´s capital, Stockholm, despite police reinforcements being deployed. Cars were set alight in poor suburbs inhabited largely by immigrants, although the unrest was reportedly not as serious as on previous nights. The rioting also spread outside the capital for the first time on Friday, with youths torching vehicles and buildings in two towns. [Snip] It is believed they were sparked by the death of an elderly man nearly a week before, who was shot by police after he allegedly threatened to kill them with a machete.

The leader of the Lebanese Shia militant Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has promised his supporters victory in Syria, where his fighters are backing President Bashar al-Assad. Mr Nasrallah said Hezbollah would stay in the conflict till the end. Syrian rebels in the besieged town of Qusair say they are under heavy bombardment from Hezbollah combatants. The town is close to the Lebanese border, a conduit for both the government and rebels to get weapons. [Snip] He said his movement could never be aligned with Syrian rebels who, in his view, were supported by the United States and Israel.

One of the men suspected of murdering a soldier in Woolwich, south-east London, was detained by police two months ago, Sky News has been told. Local shopkeepers say Michael Adebowale was part of a group of Muslim activists who had been reported to police several times. They were told the authorities were aware of him. The Metropolitan Police has defended the way it responded to reports of the killing in Woolwich, south London, after questions were raised about how long it took officers to reach the scene. The force said police were there within nine minutes of the first emergency call and firearms officers were at the scene five minutes after that. Mayor Boris Johnson was heckled when he visited the area. BBC London´s Home Affairs Correspondent Guy Smith spoke with Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, former Metropolitan Police Commander John O´Connor and Roger Gray, a former firearms officer.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have reversed their longstanding membership guidelines to allow homosexuals to join the organization. In an email to CNSNews.com, the BSA public affairs office said the vote on the resolution to “remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone” was passed with 61.44 percent in favor and 38.56 percent opposed. “For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been a part of the fabric of this nation, with a focus on working together to deliver the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training,”
