| Several years ago, the columnist Paul Krugman veered from his usual practice of writing about the economy and began writing columns about the war in Iraq. (Snip) Readers ask me about this on a fairly regular basis: How much freedom do The Times’s star columnists have? Are they edited or directed at all? Given their stature, would anyone dare? Robert Manson of Marlborough, Mass., posed the question recently in an e-mail: “I know that Times columnists are free to choose to write what they please, and I certainly consider that to be a good thing. However, I am writing to ask whether there

Comments: I think this article was the New York Times weak "mea culpa" for what their columnist write. Since they all tend to be leaning far to port, after imbibing in some drug of choice, it really doesn´t matter if they are "censured" by their editors. How hard is it to plagiarize the next person when it´s your turn to attack all things GOP? And, since there are always the dRATS talking points to use, it can´t be copying. Or, are they bullet points, with the rapid way they fire them off as 0bama needs them?

FTA: "Then Wall Street blew up the world economy, which moved me into comfortable terrain for all concerned."
Right. Wall Street did it. They love disaster and dysfunction, and capital hoarded in the face of rational fears rather than invested and growing. Leftist upending of the mortgage and lending markets had nothing to do with it. Hideously indebted foreign gov´ts had nothing to do with it.
And Stinky signing our names to some $6 trillion in added debt in the last few years, no Federal budget during his Administration, and policies that finally forced rating agencies to downgrade US debt for the first time ever[!] -- hey, that borrowing´s gonna pay off. It will. It will. Paul sez so.
Remind me again of your all-star work at Enron, was it?

They don´t need anyone telling them what they can or cannot write. 99% of them are thoroughly vetted hard-core leftists who are all programmed to say basically the same thing 100% the time.

How are we to interpret the title of this article from the NYT?
A mind (singular) of their (plural) own and the freedom to speak it (singular).
Does this construction arise out of ignorance and bad grammar or is Sullivan subconsciously telling the world that all of the NYT writers have one mind?
I´m thinking the answer is "yes".

Blah, blah, blah. Predictable leftist blather is all the NYT prints. Read one columnist, you´ve read them all. Groupthink, political correctness (aka censorship), stupid flyover Americans, incredibly noble minority group du jour. Blah, blah blah.

#5: Indeed, the Left is of one feeble, febrile mind [it´s mandatory!]. But I agree, the real problem is more poor English! Arrgh!
"Minds of their own" works OK, but -- then what? Of course, simply saying "Free to Speak Their Own Minds" gets us there directly and clearly. But -- it has insufficient nasal elevation. It´s short on "hoity" or "toity." I´m not sure which.
In their Leftist dedication to PC "gender" [meaning sex] inclusiveness, they just cannot bring themselves to use "he." They are ignorant of the fact that in English, in certain constructions, "he" takes neuter gender.

“He was not radical at all,” Taramov told WESH-TV. He added that the FBI had been tracking Todashev since the Boston bombings. At some point, Todashev moved to Florida. He was arrested for aggravated battery this month, according to police records, after getting into a fight with a man in a parking lot. When the FBI agent and others arrived at his apartment early Wednesday, the law enforcement officials said Todashev initially was cooperative. They said he appeared on the verge of signing a confession to the killings of three people in Waltham in September 2011.

Jerusalem - Israel´s air force chief says his troops need to be ready to act quickly in case of an attack from Syria. The remarks by Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel Wednesday echo statements by Israel´s military chief of staff a day earlier. Eshel warned escalation could lead to a "surprise war." He said Russian S-300 air defense systems are "on their way" to Syria, though Israel asked Russia not to supply them. Israel is concerned the Syrian civil war could spill across its border. Syrian and Israeli forces briefly exchanged fire on the Golan Heights border Tuesday. Israel has warned it will not tolerate fire from Syria

Kerry allowed that President Barack Obama won´t send American troops to Syria. But he made clear that more aid to the rebels would be coming if the effort fails. The man shot dead by an FBI agent in Orlando, Florida early today was "about to sign a statement" admitting to a role, along with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in an unsolved triple murder in Massachusetts in 2011, two people with direct knowledge of the case told ABC News. Ibragim Todashev "just went crazy," and pulled a knife during his interview with the FBI, said state and federal law enforcement officials briefed on the latest strange twist in the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing. One official said an FBI agent was stabbed several times,

An 18-year-old Florida student’s senior year has become a nightmare — all because she was in a same-sex relationship with a 15-year-old, her family says. Kaitlyn Hunt was arrested Feb. 16 for having a physical relationship with a younger classmate, who was her girlfriend at the time, mom Kelley Hunt Smith wrote on Facebook. Under Florida law, Hunt could see up to 15 years in prison and must register as a sex offender. A plea deal, however, remains on the table that would give Hunt two years´ house arrest and one year of probation, her family said. “Does my daughter deserve to lose her life for

As the impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program worsens, those most likely to be directly affected by an Iranian bomb are showing greater alarm. While the media fixates on Israel and its possible reaction, other regional players have no less at stake. Despite Riyadh’s long-held advocacy of making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, there has been much speculation in the past few years about the possibility of its acquiring, or developing, nuclear weapons should Tehran obtain the bomb. In the words of Saudi King Abdullah: “If Iran developed nuclear weapons (...) everyone in the

Dubai - Iranian authorities executed two men on Sunday convicted of working for Israeli and U.S. spy agencies, Iran’s Fars news agency reported. Mohammad Heidari, accused of passing security-related in formation and secrets to Israeli Mossad agents in exchange for money, and Kourosh Ahmadi, accused of gathering information for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, were hanged at dawn, it said. The sentence for their execution was handed down by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court and confirmed by the country’s Supreme Court. The report did not say when the pair were arrested nor when their trial took place.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

There’s really no reason for the press to suggest that the recent slew of scandals involving the Obama administration — Benghazi, the AP phone-record seizure, the snooping in James Rosen’s e-mail, the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups, and so on — are a confusing jumble. There is a very clear thread running through all of the administration’s actions: The U.S. deputy chief of mission in Libya, Gregory Hicks, says that he was told not to speak to a member of Congress about Benghazi without a State Department lawyer present, that he received a phone call from Hillary Clinton’s
