| The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane. The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, California, of an F-35A, the US Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18. Britain is also purchasing the aircraft for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. All versions - a total of 51 planes - were grounded Friday pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards.

The thing that bothers me is that it is a one size fits all solution for each branch of the armed forces. Those have a history of not working out so well.
At least this thing could plausibly meet most of the mission requirements, unlike that pos littoral combat ship we´re saddling ourselves with.

The F-22 Raptor has become much more reliable, cheaper and he better than the F-35. Maybe we should go back to producing them.

This aircraft is still in the flight test phase. This is not a big deal. Aircraft people are very cautious and that is why the airplane is grounded. The discrepancy will be resolved and testing will continue.

Non-engineers have no concept of this process.
It´s not a fashion show and it´s not about consensus. It´s not about hoping to be be right. It´s about testing and measuring and refinement of concept based on results.
Wishers and hopers and dreamers need not apply.
They should stay out of politics too but good luck with that.

It´s a cracked engine *blade*, has very little to do with the F-35 itself. I guess that´s good news.

[Snip] One moment Mr Karzai is being hailed as the saviour of the West, the only Afghan leader who can be trusted to take the fight to the Taliban. The next he is being denounced as a corrupt and weak politician who is only interested in his own self-advancement. Wind farms are like one of those frustratingly unripened boils: you know that you shouldn´t keep squeezing but they´re so noxious and irritating and hideous that you just can´t resist. Afghanistan has suspended talks with the US to discuss the nature of US military presence after foreign troops withdraw in 2014. A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said the decision was taken over "contradictions" in the US proposal of direct talks with the Taliban. Mr Karzai also ruled out talking to the Taliban until the peace process was "Afghan-led". Earlier, four US soldiers died in a Taliban attack at an Afghan air base. A spokesman for the Taliban said the militants had launched two rockets at Bagram airbase, the largest military base for US troops in Afghanistan.

You don´t need to know much about Afghanistan, the nature of extremist movements or world affairs in general to understand one important principle: Never mind what they say, what are they doing? So while last night the Afghan Taliban released a statement (carefully co-ordinated with the White House) expressing their commitment to finding a political solution to Afghanistan´s conflict, this morning we wake to news that they launched a mortar attack on Bagram air base last night, killing four Americans. [Snip] The problem is that the US is negotiating not from a position of strength but a position of weakness.

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
