Unlike many of his activist cohorts, he has not prevaricated on Christian teachings about sex, marriage, or abortion. I took one of Dr. Sider´s classes in seminary, and although he seldom taught the class himself, relegating that task to associates, I read a number of his articles and publications (actually of course several of his articles were required reading) and usually agreed with him. I was always sorry he didn´t teach more himself. His social concerns never compromised orthodox Christianity.

When I got my application to aarp in the mail, I didn´t even open it. I wrote on the outside of the envelope:
DO NOT EVER SEND ANYTHING TO ME AGAIN. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A FUNDRAISING MACHINE FOR A POLITICAL PARTY.
I think they took me off their mailing list, it was the last piece of mail I´ve ever received from them.

Glad you got it stopped promptly, #3. It took three notes from me to get them to stop.
The entitlements will have to be curtailed. Probably won´t happen until 2025 is here. The fools in congress don´t want to touch them until they are well out of office and can leave the dirty work to others.
Uncap the salary max in SS, raise the retirement age to 68 and make it means-tested for the wealthy (I know, that wasn´t the deal but it can´t be helped now.)
Raise the co-pays on Medicare and Medicaid doctor visits to discourage frivolous visits, etc., etc.
The usual suspects will raise holy hell, of course, but we are out of options and the hammer will soon fall.

How the ´news´ media does not ´report´ what AARP really is equal to the governments (which includes the State of New York as well as the federal gov´t) kid gloves treatment of Jon Corzine.

Sincere respect to Ron Sider, who does his level best to defend virtue as defined by Divine and Natural Law, and not forever tack to the Left as does his sometime-colleague Jim Wallis.
I used to work with Sider, and while we sometimes disagreed on policy issues, he was always open to critics; in act, he sought his critics for respectful excahnges of views.
He has listened and learned.
That´s put him in a position where he can still stand on principle.
And theologically speaking, I hope he told the AARP that they can go to --- the place reserved for panderers and frauds.

#4. Although you may think this is the solution, I say until most of the waste fraud and abuse in government is curtailed, and THEN welfare is limited to one year and out, THEN come back and talk about means testing.
44 years paying in to the system that has a contractual agreement to perform xyz upon my retirement necessitates that these programs be the last to be tinkered with for currently retired people.
To change it now, before ending all the Solyndra type fiascos would be unforgivable.

The first lady went to Bowie State and addressed the graduating class. Her speech was a mix of black history and a salute to the graduates. (Snip) It takes a man of particular vision to know, as Obama did, that the country really was ready to send an African American to the White House. But I also think that some day historians will pore over his many speeches to black audiences. They will see a president who sought to hold black people accountable for their communities, but was disdainful of those who looked at him and sought the same.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.
