Waco´s Assault on
Religious Toleration

Wall Street Journal, by Philip Jenkins

Twenty years ago, on Feb. 28, 1993, a firefight near Waco, Texas, began a weeks-long confrontation between members of the Branch Davidian sect and agents of the federal government. The conflict culminated at the sect´s compound known as Mount Carmel on April 19, with the deaths, as a fire spread through the buildings, of 80 sect members, including 20 children. Looking over the span of American history, we must be struck by what a radical departure the conflict marked in religious terms. Rather than ask what could have led believers to follow such a bizarre movement,

The rise in conflicts between the government and religious groups paralleled the rise of ´progressive´ politics. Correlation?

That repulsive butch bull-dike Reno was hailed by the left for her "courage" to incinerate a bunch of kids. No concern about exposing them to first hand smoke.

If you ask any liberal, today´s Tea Party people and "survivalists", and yes, Mormons who put away a year´s food supply, are dangerous anti-government potential terrorists. On those grounds, moves like Waco can and may be made against them.

In fact, the group [Branch Dividians] was nonpolitical, having nothing in common with the racist far right (to the contrary, the Mount Carmel settlement was multiracial).

The truth that they were stereotypes and not reality didn´t then, and doesn´t matter today to the facsistic government this Administration wants to see.

Yet the group´s theology made it essential to prepare for the armed conflicts that would ensue in the imminent apocalypse, and that meant acquiring and stockpiling weapons.

I believe it is also essential for free people to prepare for "armed conflicts" in America today - under our Constitutional rights -- before those rights vanish.

When you look around at the land grabs, the tax grabs, the anti-white racism, the circumvention of Congress, the top-heavy Agencies that make law, the insurance, bank, car companies and other companies that are being grabbed by this Administration, you see your personal space being whittled away, slowly and almost imperceptibly. One small thing here, one small thing there and soon it´s all gone.

Those who have prepared for a violent attack against them by government and those who plan to prepare have the right idea. At least they see things for what they are -- governmental overreaching. Instead of the God-given life, liberty and pursuit of happiness we should maintain, we have vanishing liberty and encroaching communism.

I don´t believe all of what is going on is merely a shift toward "social democracy". I believe it´s worse -- tyranny, dictatorship, and/or communism.

And where is the GOP?

Reports at the time had it that David Koresch was a regular visitor into town, hardware store, grocery etc. The Dim-witted Justice Department (Reno) could have easily captured him with little or no violence.

Crappiest government money can buy.

I remember that our local Jackson MS paper ran a 1/2 page article about Koresh two days before the raid. I thought then that he was being set up and was correct.

They commited two intolerable sins, clung to their bibles and their guns. Our government is so full of misinformation who knows if any allegations of child abuse had merit. They had plenty of opportunity to drag Koresh in without violence. Regardless of any possible legitimate concern that is the business of government, their actions suggest a nefarious motive or the most utter incompetence on the planet. Either way cause to distrust, a stark reminder of how current our founding documents are.

#6, Koresh went out jogging every morning, off the compound. If they´d wanted to, the Feds could have just picked him up then.

The government (tanks and guns) violating the Posse Comitatus Act and killing 20 children produced no major outrage, yet an evil man kills 20 children in a school and there is outrage. Where have intelligent people gone?

I was thinking the other day, people followed the Cult of Jim Jones and they all died. People followed the Cult of David Koresh and they all died, the Heaven´s Gate Cult who all died, What will happen to the people who follow the Cult of Obama? Hmmmmmmm.

I remember watching live coverage on CNN and seeing a tank puncture the side of the Mt. Carmel building and pull back with flames shooting out of the barrel. That footage was never shown again. That was when the fire broke out and the building burned down. It looked to me like a flame thrower tank injecting fire into the building. I have no idea what really happened, that is just what it looked like.

In these selfie times when freedom, joy and posterity are just a head-tilt, grin and finger-click away, it is only fitting that the United States of America would have as commander-in-chief the undisputed King of Selfies. The Selfie Presidency for the Selfie Generation in a Selfie World. President Obama is that rightful king. There he is with the greatest baseball players of our day. The president mugging for a selfie outside the White House. Later he feigned outrage when it became public that the picture of him with Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and a “44” jersey was just part of

Good news: thanks to a ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Monday, the "most transparent administration in history" is going to have to tell American citizens when it believes it´s legally entitled to kill them. The lawsuit arose out of Freedom of Information Act requests by two New York Times reporters for Office of Legal Counsel memoranda exploring the circumstances under which it would be legal for U.S. personnel to target American citizens. The administration stonewalled, asserting that "the very fact of the existence or nonexistence of such documents is itself classified," and a federal district judge

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Sen. Lindsey Graham recognized the threat years before it had a chance to form — and knew immediately what he had to do. After the tea party wave in the 2010 election, right-wing groups were itching to get one of South Carolina’s newly elected conservative congressmen to challenge Graham, the blunt-spoken, deal-making congressional veteran of two decades. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, a favorite of the grass roots, was high on their list. So when Graham got wind in 2012 that Mulvaney wanted a seat on the House Financial Services Committee, he quietly lobbied his longtime friend, Speaker John Boehner, to

If you have student loans, chances are you wish there was a way to make them disappear. And in a way, there is: The federal government now offers three repayment plans that lower monthly payments and will—eventually—forgive remaining debt. A separate plan forgives loans for people who take certain public-service jobs. Some of these options, however, are so new that nobody knows how well they´ll serve borrowers. Even when it comes to well-established repayment plans, many students don´t truly understand their options. And some analysts say that policy adjustments are needed to ensure that students don´t get too comfortable taking on

The Democratic Party’s obsession with income inequality and “the one percent” is factually misguided, science has found. Over the weekend, leading academic professor Mark R. Rank discussed the findings of a recent scientific study on income inequality in the New York Times. It turns out that, according to scientific data, the Left’s horror stories about a rigid class structure in the United States fueled by nefarious, wealth-hoarding one-percenters is false. “The picture drawn of the 1 percent has been that of a static population, just as the 99 percent is often portrayed as unchanging,” Rank writes. “There is a line drawn between

You can often tell when advocates of one side in an argument fear they will ultimately lose. They change their branding. A few years ago, warnings about “global warming” were replaced with scare stories about “climate change.” One reason? The Earth had stopped appreciably warming in the late 1990s, making the change a PR necessity. Supporters of affirmative action are now signaling similar weakness. What was called “racial quotas” in the 1970s and has been referred to as “affirmative action” since the 1990s is giving way to a new term: “race-sensitive admission policies.” The language shift is telling — race-based preferences

Would you boycott a family dinner because your grandfather holds some politically incorrect views about welfare recipients? Or, would you uninvite a neighboring family from attending a block party after learning that they attend an evangelical church that upholds a traditional definition of marriage? Most reasonable people would say “no,” adhering to the old adage that it’s rude to talk politics in polite company. Unfortunately, this rule of etiquette that has governed civil society for ages seems to be quickly evaporating in the world of commerce, as highlighted by the now notorious case of Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich. The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
