| Marana, Ariz.-The snow is gone from the Match Play Championship, and so are Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. In a stunning conclusion Thursday, Shane Lowry made a 4-foot par putt on the 18th hole to eliminate McIlroy in the opening round of golf´s most unpredictable tournament. It was the third time in the last four years the No. 1 seed went home after one round. Moments later, Charles Howell III beat the second-seeded Woods on the 17th hole. Howell nearly holed a wedge for birdie on the 16th and made a 25-foot birdie on the 16th to seize control.

Comments: Ratings bust for NBC but a good weekend of golf coverage for those tired of the Tiger focus...

A ratings bust to say the least but the golf media are hoist by their own petard. Too bad for them, match play is great tv, multiple dramas unfolding all day long as great golfers go head to head. Those that tune out may matter to the advertisers but golf lovers can enjoy a meaningful event relatively untainted by an ugly media´s tunnel vision.

OP, #1: Indeed, same thoughts here. Ratings will probably take a hit.
OP: "Tiger focus" is one thing. Tiger worship has been on display too, too frequently. Yuck.

Please, God........Solyndra, A1Batteries, Ray´s HellBurger ad infinitum......and next Tiger.........
The WAN has the anti-Midas touch. Kinda why I was glad Tiger and he played together last week.
Skilled? Yes, indeed. Decent human being? Absolutely NOT.

Democrats were writing obituaries for California´s GOP after winning a supermajority in the state legislature last November, thus gaining veto-proof power to raise taxes. But their legislative lock may have slipped after this week´s special election in which Republican farmer Andy Vidak appears to have defeated a Democrat—in a heavily Democratic senate district—who had championed high-speed rail and a higher minimum wage. If Mr. Vidak wins an outright majority—late Friday, he led with 49.8% of the vote and provisional ballots were still being counted—his victory would put Republicans two senate seats short of reclaiming their veto on tax hikes.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde avoided immediate charges but was named an "assisted witness" after French prosecutors grilled her for two days over a state payout to a disgraced tycoon when she was finance minister. Lagarde was questioned for a total of 24 hours by prosecutors working for a court that probes cases of ministerial misconduct over her 2007 handling of a row that resulted in 400 million euros ($515 million) being paid to controversial business figure Bernard Tapie. "My status as assisted witness is not a surprise," she told reporters as she left the Paris courthouse late on Friday. Headline resplit for balance.

Senators may confirm Penny Pritzker next month to lead the Commerce Department, a top Senate Republican said after a drama-free hearing Thursday. Commerce Committee senators on both sides of the aisle largely shied away from the controversies surrounding the family of Chicago billionaire and Hyatt Hotel heiress Pritzker, despite GOP criticism centering on the use of subprime lending practices and offshore bank accounts. (Snip) The hearing was surprisingly cordial with questions ranging from cybersecurity to the National Weather Service to creating manufacturing jobs to fisheries. Only three questions, two from Thune, related to Pritzker’s family.

Raymond Maxwel --one of the four State Department officials disciplined over security lapses that led to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last year -- is also a prolific poet. And he´s been publishing provocative verses since he was put on administrative leave December 18. Some of the poetry represents scathing commentary on the post-Benghazi fallout and implies that he feels like he´s been made a scapegoat. In "Trapped in a purgatory of their own deceit," Maxwell writes in part: "The web of lies they weave / gets tighter and tighter / in its deceit

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

Sen. Ted Cruz doesn’t have as many friends as he says he does. In the latest round of Cruz’s simmering debate with Sen. John McCain (who labeled Cruz a "wacko bird"), Cruz spoke of "my friend, the senior senator from Arizona" while painting him as out of touch with his party and country. It usually takes a while for senators to learn how to weaponize compliments and imprecations of friendship, but Cruz is a quick study. After a patient attack on McCain´s understanding of history, Cruz said: "I know my friend from Arizona is well aware of that

National Republicans have shifted so drastically in the past decade that the party’s most vaunted figure - former President Ronald Reagan - would no longer find a home in the GOP, former Sen. Bob Dole claimed Sunday. “Reagan couldn’t have made it,” Dole said, adding he too would also have faced challenges in today’s Republican Party. Instead of operating day-to-day in a nonelection year, the national party should focus on broader plans to rehabilitate itself after the losses of 2012, the former Kansas lawmaker said. “I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors

A Washington state Democrat is accusing Republicans of “throwing American infrastructure … under the bus” after a bridge collapse there this week. The portion of Interstate 5 in Washington that runs over the Skagit River collapsed on Thursday after a truck hit an overhead support structure, but Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) cited the incident in an interview as proof Republicans were blocking infrastructure investment to hurt President Obama politically. “Well, they have clearly spent the whole last five years trying to tear the president down, but they have done it by throwing the American infrastructure and

If you want to see the true face of the Obama administration, you need look no further than the president’s embattled attorney general, Eric Holder. By turns whiny, shifty, obfuscatory, petulant, insulting and arrogant, Holder has become a fixture before congressional investigating committees, fending off one Obama scandal after another, while proclaiming that he — the nation’s top cop — doesn’t know anything about anything and highly resents any implication that he does. Indeed, all the Obama scandals — the murderous gunrunning scheme called Fast and Furious, the secret monitoring of the Associated Press and Fox News reporter James Rosen

Michelle Obama certainly knows how to work a room! In this case, it was a kindergarten classroom at Savoy Elementary School in Washington D.C., where the patrons were, well, pint-size. The first lady paid a visit to the youngsters, brightening their day with some silly dance moves performed in unison and imparting an important message about hard work and perseverance.Awww. According to the Huffington Post, Obama encouraged the kiddos to "try new things and not be afraid to fail, because we have all failed," and referenced Kerry Washington (also in the audience),

Some conservatives think that the elite media are finally turning on Barack Obama and his administration. The argument goes like this: The trio of scandals that have burst forth in the last couple of weeks—the events before, during, and after the deadly attack on the diplomatic outpost in Benghazi; the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups; and especially the Department of Justice’s secret subpoenas of Associated Press phone records and targeting of Fox News reporter James Rosen as a potential co-conspirator in a leak investigation—will mark an inflection point. From here on out, journalists will apply far more scrutiny
