Now that it´s become increasingly clear that the rich don´t pay taxes anyway, maybe it would be a good time for the Republicans in Congress to choose another issue to focus on instead of saving the rich from the higher taxes they don´t pay.

Obama´s nominee for Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, recently defended his use of a tax shelter at his Senate confirmation hearings by stating that what he did was perfectly legal. And if Mr. Lew, an Orthodox Jew, thinks it´s kosher to have a secret bank account in the Cayman Islands, why shouldn´t every rich person take advantage of such an opportunity? And most do.

The Republicans´ notion that if rich people had more money, they´d start more businesses, is as much of a fallacy as the Federal Reserve´s notion that if banks had more money they´d make more housing loans.

The reason people aren´t buying more houses is because we´re in a recession and they can´t afford them, even though the Fed has flooded the banks with money.

And the reason rich people aren´t starting businesses is also because we´re in a recession and people can´t afford to buy the products that new businesses would produce, not because rich people don´t have enough money to invest.

The Republicans should make a deal with Obama: they´ll agree to raise taxes on the wealthy, which the wealthy won´t pay anyway, if the Democrats agree to make spending cuts large enough to reassure investors and bond-rating agencies that the U.S. is fiscally responsible enough to avoid turning into Greece.
