LOS ANGELES — British tourist Michael Baugh and his wife said water had only trickled for days as they brushed their teeth, showered and drank from the taps at the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, but they could not have imagined the disturbing reason. The body of a Canadian woman was later discovered at the bottom of one of four cisterns on the roof of the historic hotel near Skid Row. The tanks provide water for hotel taps and would have been used by guests for washing and drinking.

Hm. Might be the groundwork for lawsuits.

Although the thought is actually making me gag.

Have a look. Not hard to see how Brit tourists (who love to travel on the cheap) would be attracted to this restored and renovated hotel. Have a look at the photo gallery.

Rates said to be around $100 - some less.

As for hotels in "dodgy" neighborhoods, a fair amount of London could be called dodgy. At least the moderate to low rent areas.

Lawsuit? How would the owners of the hotel know that a woman had somehow gotten into or been put into a water tower on the roof - 20 feet above roof level. And with an opening so small that rescuers could not get into the tank.

If the body had been that of a clown, would the water have tasted funnier?

i think those tanks are for fire suppression, not drinking/bathing. if there were a dead body in the drinking water, i would think a lot more folks would actually be sick from the bacteria, etc.

rule of thumb rum with gunpowder? Huh?

Anyway, I have never heard of water tanks on top of buildings where the water is used for drinking. Not in the second half of the 20th or 21st century, that is. Yeah, if it were clown, it would have tasted funnier #7

Shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, a 19-year-old in a hoodie and baggy jeans was captured on a grainy black-and-white surveillance video urinating into a reservoir that slakes the thirst of Portland, Ore.’s 600,000 or so residents. (Cue the disgusted “Ewwwwwwwws!” right here.) But really, Portland Water Bureau officials, do you have to flush 38 million gallons of potable water for the sake of a cup or two of human urine? That’s how much the bladder comfortably holds, although the bladder in question obviously wasn’t comfortable. We get the fact that Beervana prides itself on its water supply. The water bureau

BISMARCK, N.D. — A federal judge on Wednesday overturned a North Dakota law that bans abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy and before many women know they’re pregnant. U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland said the law is “invalid and unconstitutional” and that it “cannot withstand a constitutional challenge.” The state attorney general said he was looking at whether to appeal the decision by the Bismarck-based judge. North Dakota is among several conservative states that have passed new abortion restrictions in recent years, but abortion rights supporters called North

The team behind the upcoming TV movie about convicted killer Kermit Gosnell counted on the public to help them fund their project. They said that the mainstream media and Hollywood didn´t give Gosnell´s horrific crimes the attention they deserved. The result? The most successful crowdfunding campaign in Indiegogo´s history, beating projects spearheaded by actors James Franco and Shemar Moore. Filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney credit the support of popular actors Kevin Sorbo and Nick Searcy for starring in videos promoting the project. McAleer and his wife Ann McElhinney have raised $907,460 to date and the total continues to climb.

After devoting 15 minutes to a Barack Obama interview in the last 24 hours, CBS piled on with another seven minutes devoted to a "scary powerful" top aide. Charlie Rose offered a puff piece on Alyssa Mastromonaco, Obama´s deputy chief of staff. The CBS This Morning co-anchor on Thursday offered no tough questions and instead repeatedly underlined just how important she is. Rose marveled, "You know what somebody called you? Scary powerful." The co-host narrated, "We recently spoke to her about her low profile, high power role. Every time I read a piece about you, it talks about power." Rose

At the same Clinton Foundation-sponsored event Thursday where Chelsea Clinton announced her first pregnancy to the world, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took a question from a young, 19-year-old woman who chose to publicly reveal her status as an undocumented immigrant. “That was incredibly brave,” Clinton told the woman after she shared her story. The woman, who introduced herself as Nova, got emotional as she told Clinton and the other people in attendance that she was an undocumented immigrant. Struggling through tears, she continued, “I want to say that it’s been extremely difficult for me

President Obama mocked Republican opponents of his health care law on Thursday, saying that they were going through the “stages of grief” and that critics should accept that the law is here to stay. “I recognize that their party is going through, you know, the stages of grief, right?,” said Obama during a press briefing at the White House. “Anger and denial and all that stuff and it -- we´re not at acceptance yet -- but at some point, my assumption is, is that there will be an interest to figure out how do we make this work in the

One woman who did not want to show her face on camera told KFOX14 her son brought the assignment home because he was attending another tutoring session when his teacher passed it out. She is concerned other students completed the questions in class, so other parents could not stop them from reading it. "How is she grading it? Is she reading it? Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

I live in Las Vegas. I live and breath Nevada politics. Something is very wrong. Something smells rotten in the Nevada desert. And Senator Harry Reid’s fingerprints are all over it. I am of course referring to the Bundy Ranch siege. This was a dispute between a Nevada ranching family with rights to the land in question for 140 years and the BLM (Bureayu of Land Management). The government claims they haven’t paid grazing fees for 20 years. The result was a government assault on the ranch- including snipers with assault rifles, SUV’s, helicopters, airplanes and over 200 heavily armed troops. No

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote in her forthcoming book that she was “hurt” and “angry” by 2012 reporting on her fraudulent claim to Native American heritage. “What really threw me, though, were the constant attacks from the other side,” Warren wrote in her book “A Fighting Chance.” “I would almost persuade myself that I was starting to get the hang of full-throttle campaigning and then — bam! Out of left field, the state Republican Party, or the Brown campaign, or some blogger, would launch a rocket at me,” Warren wrote, adding, ”I was stunned by the attacks.” This reporter (blogger?) reported extensively
