| The FBI has launched a probe into suspected insider trading activity that took place one day before H.J. Heinz announced that it would be acquired for $28 billion by a private investment consortium. The FBI confirmed the criminal investigation on Tuesday, days after the Securities and Exchange Commission froze a Swiss account that the agency said was used by “certain unknown traders” to make “highly suspicious” trades in advance of the Heinz deal. “We are consulting with the SEC to determine if a crime was committed,” said Kelly Langmesser, a spokeswoman in the FBI’s New York office.

A few years ago John Freaking Kerry stiffed some poor chumps with his Amgen stock that he KNEW was about to take a hit because of a guvmnt announcement (next day!) that it was not going to pay the freight for some of Amgen´s drugs for cancer patients in Medicare. For you and me, this would be "insider trading" but as an exalted "elected official" he is exempt from insider trading rules. I wonder who I suspect of playing fast and loose with inside information?

An IRS supervisor working in Washington told congressional investigators that she personally reviewed applications from groups for tax-exempt status, in testimony that appears to show the agency’s scrutiny of conservative groups extended beyond the confines of the office in Cincinnati. Holly Paz, who was a supervisor in the Internal Revenue Service’s tax-exempt status division, indicated during an interview with congressional investigators that she did review such applications, but indicated that she believed “tea party” meant political advocacy in general — not necessarily conservative groups.

Syria is turning out to be a sort of Spanish Civil War of our age, with Hezbollah and Iran playing the role of fascist Italy and Germany, and the Islamic nations and jihadists that of Stalin’s Russia, as the moderates disappear and the messy conflict becomes a proxy war for greater powers, with worse to come. A series of shootings this weekend has Chicagoans on edge. A total of 11 separate shootings since Friday night have resulted in seven deaths and at least 30 injuries in the Windy City.
