Paris/Dakar-A French soldier and more than 20 Islamist rebels were killed during what appeared to be the first clashes in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountain range where militants have taken refuge in northern Mali, French sources said on Tuesday. Speaking on a visit to Athens, French President Francois Hollande said serious fighting had broken out and was continuing in the remote Adrar des Ifoghas mountains, resulting in several casualties among the rebels and one among the French. "A legionnaire from the 2nd foreign parachute regiment has died in a clash with Islamists in northern Mali," Hollande told reporters

U.S. and Israeli defence chiefs on Friday reaffirmed cooperation to counter threats from Iran and condemned the alledged use of chemical weapons by Syrian government forces. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and his Israeli counterpart Moshe Yaalon reiterated during a meeting that the two allies "will continue to work together to counter threats posed by Iran and remain prepared for a range of contingencies," said Pentagon spokesman George Little in a statement. Millions of Iranians voted to choose a new president on Friday, with prospects unclear whether the country will continue hardline diplomacy especially with the West on nuclear issues.

Documentary-makers in Germany have claimed that legalising prostitution has turned the country´s capital Berlin into ´Europe´s biggest brothel.´ Sex trade laws were radically liberalised by the German government in 2002 but a documentary called Sex - Made In Germany estimates that one million men pay for sex every day. The film was based on two years of research captured using hidden cameras and explores Berlin´s world of ´flat-rate´ brothels where customers pay €49 (£42) for as much sex as they want. The British army has more horses than tanks and must stop opposing spending cuts, a senior Treasury minister said today. It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
